Match and write


1. Teacher distributes the match and write dialogue tasksheet to each
pupil. (refer to 4.7 match and write)
I am going to distribute the tasksheet to you.

2. Teacher asks pupils the name of person who are talking and name of the
oocupation shown.
Can you tell me the people who are talking in the dialogue.

3. Get the pupils to read the questions together. Teacher can also select
two or three pupils to read the questions. Praise them for reading loudly
and correctly.

4. Teacher writes the first question on the board.

5. Elicit answer from the pupils and write the answer on the board.

6. Teacher asks pupils to sit in group of three.

7. Tell the pupils that they can refer to the jumbled words tasks to write
the answer correctly.

8. Teacher starts the exercise and monitors the pupils.

Running Dictation
CLASSROOM SET UP: Before starting the activity, ask pupils to keep all
their things under the table or in the bags. Clear the floor of bags. Push all
chairs under the table. Clear a space in front of the coloured paper strips
on the walls. Make sure all pupils can run to the walls (they are not
blocked).
Childrenkeep your textbooks, your activity book and exercise
book.
Clear everything on your desk.
Stand up everyone.
Push your chairs under the desk.
We are going to play running dictation.

1. Blue-tack the 6 strips of sentences on a wall. (3 strips in blue, 3 strips in


yellow) (Refer W Running Dictation Strips)

My mother is a teacher.
My grandfather is a cobbler.
My aunt is a green grocer.
He bakes cakes and breads
She sews clothes
He is a dentist.

Print on blue paper


Print on yellow paper

I am going to paste some pieces of paper on the wall.


There are six pieces of paper altogether
Three are blue papers.
Three are yellow papers.

2. Teacher gets pupils in pairs. One is sitting (the Writer). One is


standing next to them (the Runner). The writer needs a pencil, lined
paper (Refer to Running Dictation Writing Lines) and eraser.
Alright childrennow I want you to choose a friend or a
partner.
Have you got your friend or partner?
Good.
One of you will be number one and the other will be number
two.
Choose your number now.
Number one please put up your hand.
Very good.
Number oneyou are the writer.
Number onesit down on your chairs.
Take your pencil and eraser.
NowI am going to give the paper to you.
Number two please put up your hand.

3. Teacher asks two pupils. Teacher tells the runner to run to any of the
blue paper strips.
I am going to show you how to play the game.
Azizyou are the writer so you sit.
Amaryou are the runner. Can you see the blue paper strips
on the wall over there?

4. To model, teacher runs with the pupil to the sentence. Teacher asks the
pupil to read the first word in the sentence by pointing to the word.
What is this? (e.g.: my[ my mother is a teacher])

5. Then, together, the teacher and the pupil run back to the writer.
Teacher asks the runner:
What was the word? Tell the word to your friend.

6. When the runner says my, ask the writer to write the word.
Write the word on the paper.

7. If the writer cannot spell the word, the runner spells the word out. If the
runner could not spell the word, ask him / her to refer back to the word
on the wall.
AzizCan you spell the word? You cant

You dont remember the spellingrun to the blue papers again
and memorise the spelling.

8. Teacher repeats the process for the other blue sentences. (The runner
can memorize more than one word at a time, if he/she has the ability to
do so.)

Alright childrenthat is how you play the game.


You have to run to the blue papers and memorise all the
words. Then, tell your friend or partner to write all the words on
the paper.
Rememberthe runner cannot shout to the writer and the
writer cannot run to the wall to look at the words.

9. Teacher monitors the pupils to ensure that the runners do not grab the
pencil or eraser or shout the word to the writers from the wall. Only the
writers may touch the pencil and eraser. Only the runners are allowed
to run to the sentence.

When each pair finishes copying down the blue sentences, the
writers swaps places and become runners and vice versa, and to repeat
the process with the yellow sentences.

When all 6 sentences have been copied down, teacher asks pupils
to rearrange the sentences.

After they have finished rearranging their sentences, pupils must
raise their hands. Teacher then checks the spelling and punctuation.

The first pair to finish with correct sentences wins the game.

Then, the teacher gives the pairs the Running Dictation tasksheet
as homework (refer 4.8 W Running Dictation Jumbled Sentences)
