MOORING AND
BERTHING

A quiet revolution in ferry mooring

Easymoor
Thomas Toth, Technical Sales Director, Trelleborg Harbour Marine, UK

With over 30 years in designing and manufacturing mooring

equipment, Trelleborg Harbour Marine has released the new
Easymoor Quick Release Hook range of mooring systems
specifically designed for high through put ferry and container
terminals.
Easymoor presents a breakthrough by utilising the safety and
operational advantages gained from conventional quick release
hook design, used to moor large vessels, with further enhancements
to suit the special needs of the ferry terminal operator.
Easymoor provides:
Faster and safer mooring and securing of vessel mooring lines,
while minimising mooring crew requirements achieved by
largely automating the mooring process.
Virtually eliminating manual handling of mooring lines by dock
line crew, thereby reducing time to moor and the associated
reduction of injury to personnel who must handle and secure
mooring lines.
Faster and safer release of mooring lines eliminating manual
mooring line handling.
Monitoring for high mooring tension while the vessel is
moored.

guides and taken around the capstan allowing a single dock crew man to haul in
between 10 and 30 metres of lead line with the main mooring eye attached.

Ships in ports cost money, ships at sea make

money
The global drive by ferry operators is to take advantage in
economies of scale by operating larger vessels with higher carrying
capacity as well as increase the frequency of sailings.
This places increased pressure on terminal operators to exercise
the operating limits of their mooring facilities and to ensure that
the safety and efficiency of their operations are uncompromised.
Easymoor takes advantage of the principals used in the design
of quick release hooks however with a number of enhancements
which go toward minimising manpower requirements needed
haul in and secure each mooring line.
The patented design allows a single operator to use the integral
capstan to haul in the mooring line via the split hook guide and
integral fair lead, and guide the mooring eye onto the hook.
Release of mooring lines can be achieved by a single dock
crew and may be instigated from a local push button release panel
located at a safe distance away from the hook. The option for
remote release is available whereby the operator can release a
number of hooks from one centrally located panel.
Safety over release is of prime importance and the Easymoor
control system incorporates security measures to ensure against
accidental or inadvertent local and remote release of mooring
lines.
Reliability of the equipment which is required to operate at
high frequency is particularly relevant at busy ferry terminals,
has been carefully engineered in the design of Easymoor .
Easymoor utilises unique construction methodologies to ensure
low maintenance and high reliability including:
Use of high corrosion resistant alloy steels and graphite
impregnated cast support structures.

Very high level of weather protection and sealing for electrical

components with extensive use of stainless steel enclosures.
Electrical release actuators, status switches and controllers located
off the articulated hook ensuring protection from mechanical
damage and exposure to sea water.

MOORING AND
BERTHING

How does Easymoor work?

During mooring

The vessel positions itself at the dock with mooring lines made
ready by the vessel crew.
A lead line (usually a small diameter rope) is tied to the mooring
eye by the crew on board and is relayed to the dock personnel.
The lead line is positioned through the Easymoor fairlead
guides and taken around the capstan allowing a single dock crew
man to haul in between 10 and 30 metres of lead line with the
main mooring eye attached.
The lead line is guided through the Easymoor fair leads until
the main mooring eye reaches the hooks front fair lead.
The eye of the mooring is hauled over the hook unit and the
eye guided automatically to the hook. The capstan is stopped
and tension is maintained by the capstan brake. The capstan is
reversed and the mooring eye eases onto the body of the specially
designed hook body. The mooring is complete and secure.
Note: Dock crew is not required to man-handle the mooring line

The patented design allows a single operator to use the integral capstan to
haul in the mooring line via the split hook guide and integral fair lead, and
guide the mooring eye onto the hook.

While berthing

Easymoor may be fitted with the optional Smarthook Load

Monitoring System whereby the tension in each mooring line
can be monitored and displayed. Generally, a pre-tension of the
line will be applied by the vessels winch and the corresponding
tension is displayed locally. Alarms for high tension will be raised,
should presets be exceeded.
Releasing mooring lines

From the local panel release station

A local stainless steel panel usually located within five to 10
metres of each Easymoor unit allows push button release of the
mooring line.
Release operation can be isolated at a remote location to
ensure against unintended release.
From the remote release panel
A remote central panel may be used to consolidate release
operation for a number of Easymoor units across a single or even
several berths.
The remote panel provides status indication for each hook as
either Locked or Released and individual release push buttons
operators are provided for each hook.
Safety interlocks incorporated at the panel isolate hook release
operators until release is to be performed to ensure against
unintended release.

Easymoor takes advantage of the principals used in the design of quick release
hooks however with a number of enhancements which go toward minimising
manpower requirements needed haul in and secure each mooring line.

Easy mooring for container jetties

Easymoor is a viable alternative to bollards for high thru put
container jetties where faster mooring, high level of mooring
safety and mooring monitoring is required.
