truly a student athlete.
Mair quickly added, Student, first.
And several weeks earlier, her coach smiled
and said she has one weakness: She cant
say no to anyone who wants her autograph or
wants to have a picture taken with her after a
game.
Work ethic, in classrooms and study hall
and on indoor and outdoor basketball courts;
ability to manage time, humility and willingness to give time to others all these attributes are part of the 18-year-old senior and
Notre Dame recruit who received the Naismith
Trophy as the nations Girls High School Player
of the Year, title of Indiana Miss Basketball,
Indiana Female Athlete of the Year, and the
Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 34.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5 assists and
3.8 steals in leading the Lady Tigers to a 27-1
record, third straight Big Eight Conference
championship, third straight Toyota/Gibson
County Teamwork Classic crown, the Hall of

She also owns a 3.8-plus grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

Jackie Young is the Naismith Trophy winner as

begun by the Atlanta Tipoff Club in 1987 and now
presented by Hilton Worldwide, named after basketball founding father James Naismith.
She is also Indiana Miss Basketball, Indiana

RETIRING

NO.3

PRINCETON
COMMUNITY RETIRES
YOUNGS JERSEY

PRINCETON Princeton Community High School basketball player

Jackie Young may be a once-ina-generation player, but one thing
future members of the Red Nation
will never see again is the number
that became synonymous with the
Notre Dame signee.
PCHS officials retired Youngs
number during the schools winter
sports honors program. No one will
ever wear Number 3 again. Youre
a hard act to follow, PCHS Athletic
Director Jason Engelbrecht told
Young.
PCHS Principal Steve Hauger,
who came up with the idea to retire
Youngs number, believes there is no
PCHS athlete more deserving of the
honor due to her work in the classroom, in the community and on the
hardwood.

PCHS athletic director Jason Engelbrecht unveils a placard and Youngs framed number 3
jersey, retired and displayed at the entrance to the gym.
DAILY CLARION ARCHIVE

This was a given when you have a student as

good as she is, as kind as she is and with what
she has done for the community, Hauger said.
When youre the leading scorer in the state of
Indiana and youre going to one of the best basketball schools there is in Notre Dame, it could not
have gone to a better person. With her character
and grace, she deserves it. That number will never
be worn again.
Breaking the state scoring record, earning
McDonalds All-American, Indiana Gatorade Player
of the Year, the Naismith Trophy Girls Basketball
Player of the Year, Indianas Miss Basketball Award
and Indiana Female Athlete of the Year, are some
of the milestones she has met.
Its crazy...Nobody else will in Princeton history
will be able to wear the number 3. Its an honor. I
saw when Skylar Diggins got her number retired,
and I wanted that to happen to me.
Young added that her final, formal appearance

awards program was the perfect ending. It was
bittersweet. Ive been playing with these seniors for
the last four years, Young said.
This was our last team thing and for it to
come to an end was sad, but we could reflect on
the memories that we had the fun moments,
the times we had on the bus, the hotels and at
practice.
Young leaves this summer for Notre Dame, but
plans to return to Princeton to catch a Lady Tigers
game and admits she may find it a bit strange.
Its going to be surreal coming in here again,
watching a girls team play and there wont be a
number 3 out there, Young said.
Instead, there will be one at the entrance. To
have that happen is crazy. Ive lived in Princeton
all my life and dreamed of doing big things. Now
that that has happened, it shows all of my hard
work is paying off.

Tiger fans cheer as the game stops to recognize Young for breaking
the all-time scoring record.
DAILY CLARION ARCHIVE

PRINCETON Jackie Young broke Damon Bailey of Bedford North Lawrences

25-year-old scoring record after hitting a first quarter, buzzer-beating alley-oop during the Lady Tigers 79-33 victory over Pike Central in a packed Tiger Arena Jan. 21,
just two weeks after setting the all-time girls scoring record at Wood Memorial High
School.
Young broke the all-time record in dramatic fashion after snatching a pass from
longtime teammate and friend, senior forward Hannah Brewer, in midair and banking a shot off of the backboard as time expired in the first quarter. Its awesome to
see her come this far and be there every step of the way, Brewer said.
While Youngs bank-shot will go down in the annals of Indiana sport history, Princeton coach Charlie Mair said Brewers perfectly placed alley-oop pass made it possible. That impressed me as much as those 2 points did, Mair said. I was ecstatic
about the pass. When she (Young) set the record, I went out and it was time to celebrate. Nobody deserves it more than her. She is a special girl, a special player and
the ultimate teammate. Notre Dame is very lucky.
It was very special. Weve been playing together since we were in fifth grade,
Young said. She knows where I am on the court at all times. She does a great job of
getting me the ball and it is great to play with her. She is a leader out there.
The crowd erupted as Young then strolled to midcourt and handed the game ball
to officials from the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame, for display at the
Hall of Fame in New Castle.
Young broke the state girls scoring record Jan. 14 at Wood Memorial High School,
despite a stiff challenge by county rival Wood Memorial. The Lady Trojans double
teamed her and fouled her at every turn, but a free throw with 3:30 left in regulation
allowed her to pass Zolman for most career points in Indiana girls basketball history
during the Lady Tigers 48-26 victory.

Young and coach Charlie Mair pictured at the

quarter break in the game to recognize breaking
the girls all-time scoring record.
I had a lot of pressure on me and its nice to relax, Young
said. After I shot that free throw, it was relief right then ...
I did not know how many I had, but once I saw the signs I
knew I got it.
After scoring that record breaking basket, and receiving
flowers from Indiana High School Athletic Association officials,
Young sprinted to the stands to hug her mother, Linda Young,
to share in her success.
It was kind of emotional. I was trying to hold it all in. I
worked hard for it. Its an amazing feeling.

YOUNG SHINES

IN CHICAGO
CHICAGO Jackie Youngs team-leading 10 rebounds and two
steals made a dramatic impact in the McDonalds All American girls
basketball game in Chicagos United Center.
Although pleased with her performance after finishing second
in scoring with 15 points, behind Sabrina Ionescus record setting
25-point performance, Young said she was more satisfied with seeing
the large contingent of Lady Tiger basketball fans who traveled nearly
five hours to watch her play.
It was crazy. A lot of people came out to see me and just to get
to play in the United Center was an honor, Young said. I had a fan
club come from Princeton and it was great. There were probably 80
people there.
Young netted the West teams first two baskets and continued
leading them in scoring while West coach Jesse Nelson platooned
players in and out.
She netted her third shot after hitting a 3-pointer midway through
the second quarter and added two more less than a minute later on
another layup to give her a team leading nine points by halftime.
Trailing by 10 at halftime, Young kept the West in contention after
snagging an offensive rebound and putting it in for two, then scored
again moments later on another contested lay-in.
Ironically, her first and only assist of the night allowed West teammate Ionescu to overtake her scoring lead with a 3-pointer.
Youngs future Fighting Irish teammate Erin Boley was second in
scoring for the East with 13. Although an adversary during the All
American game, Young said she is excited for this fall when she will
call Boley a teammate.
I got to play against and with the best 24 players in the country.
It was great to play against Erin and now Im ready to play with her,
Young said.
With the McDonalds All American Game behind her, Young traveled to New York for the April 15 Jordan Brand Classic inside New
York Citys Barclay Center, the home of the Brooklyn Nets.
She will play for a bit of pride as she wraps up her high school
career by leading the Indiana All-Star team against the Kentucky AllStar team June 11 inside the Best Choice Fieldhouse in Fishers.
After that, she will continue training for her NCAA debut this fall.
Its still sort of surreal, knowing that I will be playing for the Fighting Irish next year, Young said.
The hard work is finally paying off. I just need to keep working so
I can go up there and do whatever Coach (Ann) McGraw needs me
to (do).

MISS BASKETBALL
YOUNG OWNS
INDIANAS HIGHEST
PREP HOOPS
DISTINCTION
PETE SWANSON
FOR THE DAILY CLARION

INDIANAPOLISFor her sports and all Indiana girls sports, Jackie Young is No. 1.
Not only did Princeton Communitys 18-year-old senior become the first Southwestern Indiana
girl to win the Miss Basketball honor, she was also named the states Overall Female Athlete of
the Year by The Indianapolis Star in Lucas Oil Stadium.
I cant really put into words what this means. Never did I imagine Id leave here with two
awards, Young said after posing for pictures, including some while wearing the No. 1 jersey that
shell wear in the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games in Indianapolis and in Louisville, Kentucky.
She was considered the favorite for Miss Basketball from among Lebanons Kristen Spolyar,
Indianapolis Roncallis Lindsey Corsaro, and Tyasha Harris of 3A State Champion Heritage
Christian.
Winning Miss Basketball surprised me, said the Notre Dame recruit. I was nervous all night.
Definitely, I had butterflies in my stomach. When they announced Miss Basketball, it was a
relief.
The Overall Female Athlete of the Year competition included the winners of all girls athletes of
the year in other sports who were announced earlier. An amazing feeling. I never imagined Id
get that award, Young said. There are so many great athletes in Indiana in all these sports.
Seeing his protege named Miss Basketball rekindled memories for Lady Tigers Coach Charlie
Mair, who 28 years ago won a fight for life.
I feel very fortunate and very blessed to have overcome a hemmorhageic stroke, Mair said.
To coach the first Southern Indiana girl to win Miss Basketball is a great feeling. Jackie earned
this award through all of the hard work that she has put in.
Young was also surrounded by family at the banquet and awards ceremony.
Its crazy to win both awards, said brother Terrence Young, a substitute on the Princeton
boys 2009 unbeaten state champions. She has worked so hard her whole life for this.
Sophomore sister Kiare Young, who started alongside Miss Basketball at guard during the
recently ended 27-1 season that included a 53-game win streak over two years, calls her older
sister my role model. Seeing Jackie get this award means a lot. She has put so much hard work
into it.
Mom Linda Young reflected that This means everything to me. Jackie has worked for this her
whole life. I never thought shed get the overall athlete of the year award that was shock.

JUST THE ICING ON THE CAKE

ANDREA HOWE

EDITOR THE DAILY CLARION

m not sure a community

could be more proud of a
notable daughter, but if Jackie
Young keeps traveling down the
path shes on, Im sure we will be.
Its not just the records that
she keeps shattering, or the latest national prize named after the
inventor of the game of basketball,
that goes on her list of awards.
Its Jackie Young, the young
woman, who causes a few grown
men to tear up just a little bit
when they realize what theyre
watching on the basketball court.
Its history being made here
in Princeton by a young woman
who started out playing ball with
her older brother and his friends,
and determined to be better and
better.
Im among the Jackie fans,
not necessarily for her statistics, because I dont keep track
of them although they are
amazing.
I became a fan viewing her
from the lens of a camera and
listening to the few words that she
chooses to use in public.
Going through the digital images of Jackie Youngs high school

basketball career, I was amazed

by her composure and determination in each shot.
When I wasnt looking at her
through the camera lens, I was
amazed at her quiet, graceful
manner.
And her humility.
She never hesitates to quietly
make a point that its God Who
has blessed her with a talent.
Indiana State Rep. Tom Washburne made note, as Jackie was
honored at the Indiana Statehouse, that she has her head
screwed on right.
More importantly, as I hear her,
I think she has her heart set right.
So I wasnt surprised at all,
during the citys Jackie Young
Day celebration, when I glanced
over my shoulder, to see Jackies
aunt Lisa, standing by her mother
Linda, wiping a tear from her eye.
They have every right to be
proud of her.
I didnt blink, or I might have

BUCSHON HONORS YOUNG

IN HOUSE FLOOR SPEECH

ndianas Eighth District Congressman

Larry Bucshon, recognized Jackie
Young, a high school senior at Princeton Community High School, for winning the Naismith Trophy during a speech
on the floor of the House of Representatives
in March.
Today, I want to highlight a couple of great
accomplishments in Princeton, Indiana,
Bucshon reported from the House floor.

Earlier this month, high school senior

Jackie Young, a star guard at Princeton
Community High School, was awarded the
Naismith Trophy.
This prestigious award is presented
annually to the men and womens college
and high school basketball players who
achieve great success on the court.
And this solidifies Jackie as the nations
top high school womens basketball player.

To us in Southern Indiana, the award

comes as no surprise. With 3,268 career
points, Jackie is Indianas all-time leading
scorer.
Shes a natural leader on and off the
court. Congratulations to Jackie, and we
wish her all the best as she prepares for her
next step playing for Notre Dame.

Your discipline and commitment bring pride to

our community! Thank you, Jackie!

March 10, 2016 was Jackie Young Day in Princeton to commemorate the Princeton Community High School seniors nationwide achievement as 2016 Naismith Trophy Girls High School
Basketball Player of the Year.
Jackie is more than just an athlete, said Mayor Brad
Schmitt. ...rarely do you see that combination with humility and
character... It shows what a truly good role model she is.
The city and Young have decided to host a 3-on-3 basketball
tournament, establishing a scholarship with the proceeds. The
scholarship will be awarded to a Princeton Community High

CONTINUED FROM 3
3A state championship team as a freshman.
A great experience. Jackie picked me up
a lot this year. Not only did she get the ball
to me when I needed it, she encourages you
when youre down.
Mom Linda Young, assistant manager at
Caseys General Store in Princeton, smiled
and said I wont say when asked where her
oldest daughters work ethic and ability to
manage time came from.
But Jackie said: Mom said I had to make
my grades to play basketball. And for managing time, Ive seen a lot of athletes who
messed up in school or somewhere else,
maybe from not spending enough time in
the gym. Ive always tried to do my studying in study hall. If that isnt enough, I study
at home. Like tonight, when I need to study
for a quiz were having in English class in the
morning, she said on a Wednesday after
school.
Aunt Lisa Young, Lindas sister and an
assembler at Hansen Corp. in Princeton,
remembers that Linda always said to get your
studying done before you go to the gym or the
outdoor court.

WORK ETHIC CONTINUES

We always had a basketball in my car,

Aunt Lisa said. Ever so often, Jackie would
want to get out of the car and dribble the ball.
If there was an outdoor goal, shed shoot. On
Thanksgiving night and other holidays wed
call people to ask if they had a key to the
gym.
Uncle Jeff Young, team leader at Windsor
in Princeton and brother of Linda and Lisa,
remembers seeing his niece with a basketball
in hand when she was about 5. I came over
and was showing Terrence and some other
boys how to dribble the ball in the back yard.
I told them, If you can dribble on this grass,
you can dribble on the court.
My brother Stef and I looked over and saw
Jackie dribbling off to the side, and she was
dribbling better than the boys were. Stef and I
looked at each other and he said: Were looking at somebody special.
Kiare Young recalls that Jackie got me in
the gym when I didnt really want to be there,
like on holidays. Shed say, Come on, lets go
shoot. She wants you to do better at everything you do, not only in sports.
Linda Young remembers when Jackie was

in second or third grade, she wanted to do

gymnastics. We began taking her to the gymnastics center in Princeton.
I noticed that when she jumped on the
trampoline, she was jumping pretty high. I
thought, Shell be pretty athletic.
One of the gymnastics teachers said, See
how good shes doing? Shes not only jumping high, she has such good balance that
shes landing on her feet. Most of the girls fall
down.
Linda Young said Jackies basketball
achievements mean a lot to me. Its all surreal. I knew shed be good, but not like this.
Jeff Young said watching his niece play
basketball is truly thrilling. I never expected
her to do all that shes doing, but Im not surprised. Shes one of the hardest workers Ive
ever seen.
And shes a team-first player. At that
McDonalds All-American game in Chicago
in late-March, everybody else was looking
to score when they got the ball. Jackie has
always looked to pass the ball first, get her
teammates involved.
Theres something special about her.

HUMILITY

It comes from family. We have a very

humble family, Jackie said. I also get that
from looking at other athletes like Candace
Parker, who played for the University of Tennessee; and Skylar Diggins, who played at
Notre Dame.
I remember several years ago we went to
see Notre Dame play at Louisville. After the
game, we got lucky and got a picture with
Skylar. We were walking near the Notre Dame
group. Skylar was ready to go to the bus. But
my cousin Chris Splittorff hollered, Hey Skylar!
She turned around, saw us and agreed to
pose for a picture.
I looked up to Candace and Skylar. I loved
Candace and Tennessee, but as soon as I visited Notre Dame I knew I wanted to go there.
Skylar is so humble. She and Candace were
so good to people who wanted pictures and
autographs, and Ive always wanted to be the
same way. Yes, signing autographs and posing
for pictures take time. But I want to do those
things when people ask. And when they ask for
those things, it reminds me that my hard work
is paying off.
Jackie, who praises cousin Chris as more
like a father figure, including how he got me
started in AAU basketball by driving me to the

Evansville Basketball Academy, is asked for

autographs and pictures beyond Princeton.
After a lot of games wed go out to eat, Terrence Young said. Even in Evansville, people
recognize Jackie and want her autograph. One
night we were eating in Vincennes, where a
middle school tournament was being played.
People who were going to a game, or had just
come from one, asked Jackie for autographs.
It means a lot to me, all that she has done
and how she handles herself.
Linda Young likewise says it means a lot to
me how people look up to Jackie. Older people
tell me, Your daughters a role model. JoJo
Gentry, whos about 44 years old, says Jackie
is a role model for her. Compliments from
people like that mean a lot.
Lisa Young, who noticed that when the
Lady Tigers and the other team were warming
up before a game, Jackie would pay attention
to opposing players to see things like how and
where they liked to shoot, believes her nieces
humbleness goes back to the grandmother
for whom she is named. Linda, Lisa and Jeff
Young are offspring of the late Jackie Young.
My niece didnt know her Grandma Young,
because our mother passed away in 1989,
Lisa said. But shes a lot like our mother.
Shes so humble. A special kind of person.
Jeff Young said his niece is very humble and
family-oriented. Even with all the records she
has set, and all the accolades, she has never
forgotten where she came from.
Shes a person whom other kids look up
to.
Jackie Young has said that in pickup games
with Terrence, he frequently blocked her shot.
Back then Id never let her score. Today I
couldnt stop her, smiled Terrence.
Lisa Young smilingly made a confession.
Jackie used to want to play basketball with
the boys, so the summer before her fourth
grade year we got her into the Vincennes
University camp that was for older girls. You
were supposed to have finished fifth grade. We
lied to get her in. Though two or more years
younger than any other camper, she won a
bunch of awards. Harry Meeks, the longtime
womens coach at Vincennes University,
asked, How old are you?
Jackie stepped back and asked me if she
should lie to the coach. I told her, Tell the
truth. The camp is over now.
She told the truth and Coach Meeks said, I
have a scholarship for you.

Its not about

yourself. Its important

to think about your

teammates.

JACKIE YOUNG
That didnt go unnoticed by Hoosier Basketball
magazine publisher Garry Donna.
Jackie is the most unselfish star player Ive ever
seen, said Donna.

THE WAY I WAS RAISED

CONTINUED FROM

These came in 106 games, 97 wins around 9 losses including a 53-game win streak
that included the 2015 Class 3A state championship in downtown Indianapolis Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Starting in fifth grade, she led Princeton teams to 163 wins around 9 losses, including unbeaten regular seasons in 2013-14 and the recently ended campaign.

PHENOMENAL

Ive never seen anybody better than Jackie. Shes phenomenal. Never have I seen
anybody in high school basketball who has a third gear like Jackie does, said Lady
Tigers Coach Charlie Mair, whose fifth Princeton season marked his 35th as a head
coach.
She just might play in the WNBA someday, said Bruce Dockery, Evansville Memorial head coach the past 28 seasons.
Young, through 106 high school games averaged 30.8 points, 10.4 rebounds, 8.5
assists and 3.6 steals while shooting 63.2 percent afield, 39.8 percent from three-point
range and 86.1 percent on free throws, is the fifth Indiana girl to win the Naismith
Trophy.

SELFLESS

Owner of a nearly 3.9 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, the daughter of Linda
Young would earn ultra-high praise from Naismith Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan, who
starred for the University of Evansville before playing in and coaching over 1,200 wins
in the NBA.
The most important thing is being a good person, Sloan said years ago.
Its amazing. Not only is Jackie a great player who sets up our team, shes a role
model, said classmate Hannah Brewer, Youngs teammate since they were fifth
graders.
She never brags, but she congratulates people when they do great.
Having raised her junior season points total to 1,003 by scoring 36 in the Lady
Tigers 72-44 state championship win over Tippecanoe Valley in 2015, Young bypassed
a couple more points when she twice grabbed an offensive rebound and each time
passed the ball to give a senior substitute a chance to score in a state championship
game.

ochran
onstruction

Thats the way I was raised. I grew up that way,

she said when told of Donnas praise. Its not about
yourself. Its important to think about your teammates, said Young.
Despite the Lady Tigers early exit from the recent
postseason, she was selected as the recipient of
the 2016 Indiana Miss Basketball Award, as well as
being named the Indiana Female Athlete of the Year.
Character showed again when she signed Notre
Dame scholarship papers and national letter-of-intent
after the Lady Tigers Nov. 13 win over visiting Evansville Bosse.
I just wanted to play team basketball and get the
win before celebrating, she said before reading a
prepared statement to the Big Red Nation crowd that
stayed in Tiger Arena for the signing.
I thank God for blessing me with the ability to play
this game. Thank you to all of you who have come
out tonight. It means the world to me. It wouldnt be
possible without the Big Red Nation.
Mom, you have my back. I get the strength from
you. Thank you for all youve taught me.
I thank my brother and sister for the guidance
and encouragement youve given me. I thank my
high school coaches for working with me every
day, and my AAU coaches for working with me in
summer.
In an interview last June for the Daily Clarion Gibson County Female Athlete of the Year Award that
she also won after her 2012-13 freshman year, the
cousin of former Princeton standouts Travis Trice and
Justin Lynch noted that Sean Packer, who directed
the Salvation Army Basketball League, let me start
playing at an earlier age than most kids started.
After high jumping a school-record 5-foot-5 and
reaching the state finals in her only high school track
season, Jackie Young put her year-around sports
focus on basketball.
And now, she has jumped to No. 1 in the USA.
