In The Mountains
Summary
It is about a woman in her thirties, Pritam who escaped from
her home a few years before because of family issues. She
lives in a rough stone house on a Himalayan mountainside. As
the years went by, she took less care of herself and her
appearance became rougher and shabbier. She lives a simple
life on the mountain and her family visits her once a year.
When Pritams mother saw her, tears fell from her eyes,
partly for what her daughter has become and partly for the
happiness of being with her again. Pritam hid the fact that she
was moved by her mothers tears by speaking roughly to her
and urging her to sit down. She poured a cup of tea for her
mother, which was too strong for her. Hence, she could not
enjoy the tea. Then, they started arguing about various things
including Pritams friend, Doctor Sahib. Pritams mother did
not dislike Doctor Sahib, but disapproved of him. The next
morning, Doctor Sahib came to visit Pritam and her mother.

They sat outside in the garden. Doctor Sahib told Pritams

mother the story of how the roof of his shack collapsed
because of heavy snowfall last winter. He also told Pritams
mother about how they were alone together during the winter,
because Doctor Sahib did not have a place to stay. That night,
Pritam could not sleep well because she felt hot. In her
nightdress, she opened the door and went out. She noticed
that Doctor Sahib had not turned off his lights. Therefore,
she decided to go down to see what was going on. She saw
through the window that Doctor Sahib was still awake and
reading at his table. She knocked on the glass, which made
Doctor Sahib jump. She went over to the door and opened it
and entered. At first, Doctor Sahib stared at Pritam, shaking
and afraid but when he was no longer surprised, he felt happy
to see her. Doctor Sahib told Pritam about the story he was
reading, and how everyone lived many lives and each life
shapes their fate in their current lives. After listening to
Doctor Sahib speak rubbish until the next morning, she
opened the door and went back to her home. That same day,
she prepared food for her family. They arrived in three cars
in front of Pritams home. Pritam rushed out of the kitchen

with a red face and untidy hair and welcomed everyone,

including Sarla and her husband Bobby.

Pritam had not met Bobby for eight years. Soon they began
eating, and Pritam went round putting more food in their
plates. Pritam had not changed her clothes and her face was
red and dirty from the kitchen. Because of this, her mother
became angry. Her mother did not want Pritam to be like a
servant to her family. Her mother got angrier and went to lay
down in the bedroom. Pritam entered and offered to bring
some food for her mother. Her mother rejected and then
argued with Pritam about Pritams visit to Doctor Sahibs
house. Her mother had been awake the night before and
noticed that Pritam had gone out. They were shouting and
Pritams mother told Pritam to shut the door. Then, Pritam
revealed that Doctor Sahib used to go to kitchens of the
restaurants and ask for food before he came to live on the
mountainside. Next, Pritam ran out of the room and out of the
house and climbed a path to a flat piece of ground and lay
down. Bobby went out of the house shortly after and joined
her though he took a while to climb the path. Together, they
talked and drank, and Pritam told Bobby about Doctor Sahib.
When the conversation ended, Pritam climbed down the path

and went into the house, where her family were pleased to see
her. Pritam went into the bedroom to see her mother.

Pritams mother told her that she wanted to stay with her,
and not follow the family to Simla. Pritam tried to convince
her mother to go, but her mother resisted her. She then went
outside and told the others that her mother was staying. They
did not argue for long and wanted to leave as quickly as
possible. As they drove away, once they reached the corner,
Pritam threw three stones which each hit the roofs of the
three different cars. Pritam threw another stone towards
Doctor Sahibs shack, and it landed on the roof with a loud
noise. Doctor Sahib went out and Pritam called Food. He
waved happily back and proceeded to climb the path, which he
climbed as easily as Pritam did.

Plot
The plot of the story begins when Pritam argues with her
mother about Doctor Sahib, when they first met each
other. Pritams mother did not dislike Doctor Sahib but
disapproved of him because he was dirty and shabby.
