o Legend- Deals with the origin of things.
Example: Legend of King Arthur.
o Fable- Stories about animal.
Example: A fable by Mark Twain
o Parable- Stories from the bible.
Example: Parable of the lost sheep.
o Folk tale- Is characteristically anonymous, timeless and placeless tale circulated orally
among people.
Example: A Bakers Dozen
o Short story- A prose narrative of 10,000 words to be read in one seating.
Example: Aesops fable.
o Novel- A fictitious prose narrative of considerable length, portraying characters, actions,
and scenes representative of real life in a more or less intricate plot.
Example: A separate peace
o Novellete- Shorter than a novel, longer than a short story.
Example:

Non Fiction
o News - new information or a report about something that has happened recently.
o History- the record of past events and times, especially in connection with the human
race.
o Biography- is the story of someones life written by another person.
o Diary- is a datebook or journal where you record events, emotions, thoughts or feelings
o Journal is a diary you keep of daily events or of your thoughts or a publication dealing
with a specific industry or field.
o Essay- describes writers reaction to an experience.
o Speech- are usually short and deal with a single topic.
o Research- is careful and organized study or gathering information about a specific topic.

Poetry
Narrative
o Epic- Tells about the adventures of the traditional hero important to the history.
Example: A Prayer Answer.
o Ballad- meant for singing & usually deals with subject such as love, honor or death.
Example: Ballata 5
o Metrical Tale- deals with any emotion or phrase of life & is often told in simple manner.
Example: Evangeline
Lyric
o Song- has a particular melodious quality.
Example: The Growth of Love
o Ode- most majestic type.
Example:Ode to Silence
o Elegy- poetic lamentation for the dead.

Example: Shine
o Sonnet- can be distinguished by its form for it always consist of 14 rhymed lines.
Example: The Waste Land
o Idyll- a descriptive poem or rural or pastural character which expresses the poets
feelings of his immediate landscape.
Example: The Queen-Rose
Dramatic
o Tragedy- Portrays struggle of a strong willed protagonist fate.
Example: The White Cliffs
o Comedy- a dramatic play of light and humorous character with a cheerful or happy
ending.
Example: Hans like Vans
o Farce- a comic play marked by broadly satirical comedy and improbable plot.
Example: The Importance of being Earnest
o Tragic Comedy- characterized by heavy use of suspense, sensational episodes,
romantic sentiment and conventional happy ending.
Example: Still Life, Brief Encounter.
