Politics in the Philippines is a popular topic always under discussion during family

meals, gatherings and etc. Whenever this topic is discussed, Filipinos tend to get
into a debate on the actions of the government and what they should do and not do
for our country. Filipinos especially love talking about what politicians do in and out
of the government and especially when it comes to their opinions or even their
personal lives. Binay, Aquino, and Marcos: these are some of the common names
we hear in political world. But we should ask ourselves one question: what do some
of these names have in common other than the family names of some politicians?
According to Miriam Defensor Santiago, the term Political Dynasty is the
concentration, consolidation or continuation of public office and political power by
persons related to each other. In short, political power is continued within a family
thus making it into a dynasty. This concept has been present since the beginning
of Philippine Politics. The idea of Political Dynasties are usually seen in a more
negative light for this idea hinders equal opportunities of roles in the government as
well as new ideas from the fresher faces that appear in the government. But why do
some Filipinos think that Political Dynasties are a bad thing? If you think about it,
the idea of political dynasties are neither a good nor a bad thing since it is not
guaranteed that the examples we see of Political Dynasties in Philippine politics
will always be the same for it varies per political family.
For example, the late Jesse Robredo was a good mayor of Naga City and now his
wife is running for vice president for the 2016 elections. There is no surety if Leni
Robredo has more or less the same capacities as her husband. Another example
would be Bong Bong Marcos, he is the son of former president Ferdinand Marcos
who notorious for the martial law. One cannot conclude if Bong Bong Marcos will
have the same mind set as his father.

consolidation or continuation of public office and political power by persons related
to each other.
