Project Title: Heat Recycling of Outboard Motors

Main Body:
1) Critical Requirement:
a. Hands Free Interface: The system must be able to operate without
any customer interaction. Process Heating must develop a
computer control system that can control flow rates in the system
to optimize the heat transfer efficiency. An example would be if
outboard motors are at full speed generating a lot of heat than the
fluid flow must automatically adjust to optimize the amount of heat
recycled. The opposite situation is if the outboard motors are not in
use then the system must sense that and stop the system
otherwise it would actually cool the hot water reservoir
b. Efficiency of System: This requirement is a numerical value of the
effectiveness of the system. The efficiency of each subsystem will
directly affect the efficiency of the whole system. Engineer has
specified that each subsystem must operate at higher than 40% for
the systems operating cost to break even. A requirement of 80%
has been placed on each subsystem to ensure the system as a
whole has a substantial benefit to the end user.
c. Manufacturing Costs: For Deffos Marina to desire this product the
manufacturing cost of each unit must be kept to a minimum so they
can still sell their boats at a completive price while still offering the
best possible product.
d. Engineering Cost: For my company to maximize profits from this
project we must keep engineering costs to a minimum. Since we
will be selling this product to Deffos Marina at a low profit margin
once the system is designed and approved we must keep the
upfront design costs as low as possible to ensure a quick return on
investment of this project.
e. Ease of Instillation: For Deffos Marina to desire this product they
want it to be a simple instillation into their boats. They have
requested that the system be so simple that any assembler can
read basic instructions and put it together. This will help in reducing
the required labor cost for Deffos Marina if a specialist is not
required for every build

f.

Safety Of Operation: The safety of the customer must be a top

priority! This system will be piping around hot water though the
boat. A high factor of safety must be in place to ensure that the
system never breaks and causes harm to the customer or boat.
g. Required Maintenance: This product is to be made as hands free as
possible. This means that all components used in the heat recycling
system must be designed to outlive the life of the boat.
h. Constant Water Supply: The heat recycling system may not be in
use at all times and a backup heating system must be in place. If
the boat is anchored for the night the outboard motors will not be
producing heat so control system must know when to turn off the
heat recycling system and switch to tradition means such as oil
burner or electric water heater.
2) Decision as an Engineering Project Manager:
a. Pollution due to Construction
i. It is troubling to realize that one of the worlds oldest and
biggest industries has little regard for pollution and produces
a lot of it at the same time. How it is that such a situation is
allowed to skate by in this day and age. At this very moment
Volkswagen is taking the most scrutiny I have ever seen for
falsifying there emission results in diesel cars especially.
Meanwhile the construction industry is burning diesel in the
majority of their equipment. I can safely assume is not
burring efficiently and is most likely far more pollutant than
VWs diesel vehicles. Luckily my company does not have
much to do with the industrial/construction industry as the
ludicrous deadlines, budgets, and now pollutants I am now
becoming aware of blows my mind. How can things be a
worldwide standard for one industry but any other industry it
would be detrimental to the company if they were to follow
the same practices.
b. Measures to Prevent Pollution
i. The topic of Pollution was very concentrated toward the
construction industry but it is very important for my company
to incorporate being Green and Sustainable into the life blood
of the company. For this project in particular it focuses
specifically on the efficient use of the resources at hand. In
the past people might have thought that a system to save
the waste heat from an outboard motor was simply not worth
it because it is so financially cheap to generate heat. Now we
know it is not only about how much money the resources are
but what impact it will have on the future of resources and
the environment. The project to reuse the heat from the
outboard motor is just the beginning. Once business takes off
we can easily adapt this to system to homes and businesses.

The system maybe expensive up front but every gallon of

fuel saved from efficiency is a gallon of fuel left for the next
generation and even better one less gallon of pollutant
emitted into the air, water, and our lungs. My hope with this
system is to reduce the overall energy consumption of sea
vehicles. If this project is successful I think there might be an
even larger market in large business buildings. Imagen if all
the waste heat from large business buildings such as A/C
units was pumped into so industry building that needs hot
water! It would be a win win. The liquid cooled businesses
A/C condensers would be more efficient and the industrial
building would receive preheated water. We need to increase
our efficiency as a whole and not just in each particular area.
If we work together we can achieve so much more than we
could segregated!
c. Pressure to Clean Up: The key problem is law enforcement
i. It is amazing that people can be so oblivious to the facts that
are stated and well supported. As a young person I learned
that it is always good to question what you are told but when
it comes to pollution and how it has a negative effect on the
environment and humanity the only way to dismiss this
reality is to ignore the facts. There is data everywhere that
shows how it negatively effects the environment and health
so how can people decide it is ok to keep polluting just
because that is how things were done in the past?! I hope
that as the new generations become a strong force in the
work force there will be significant change on the
environmental front. My company does not currently have
any plans for cleaning up pollution other than increasing
efficiency of the resources that a boater currently uses but if
things go well we surely can incorporate them. One area that
this could be implemented is in heat exchanger for the
outboard exhaust gas. We could incorporate some sort of
filtration system to extract PM as we recycle the heat.
d. Risk Identification, Risk Analysis, and Reduction
i. As the eBook states there are several different types of risks
such as human life, cost, environmental, and financial. For
my companies project risk reduction is very important. At the
top of priorities is the risk to human life. We must make a
product that will not harm the user in anyway. In the previous
assignment it was shown that a high safety factor of the
system was a critical requirement. A heat recycling system
may not seem dangerous but if something goes wrong when
the user is out at sea it could result in death. The remaining

risk factors are all looked at together and compromises must

be made in some areas to achieve the best product in the
end. An example of this might be that a more expensive heat
exchanger could provide a higher efficiency but the extra
cost does not warrant the increased efficiency. Risk decisions
are often much less cut and dry than the example I proposed.
Using the tools such as PFRA will allow for a quantities result
to help decide what the best compromise to take in order to
have the highest risk reduction.
