My name is Angelita Martinez and in the spring of 1944 there was no doubt
Germany would be defeated. People were telling us that "The Red Army is advancing
with giant stridesHitler will not beabletoharmus,even if he wantsto" Thenext
day we got terrible news German troops had penetrated Hungarian territory with the
government's approval. Less than three days German Army vehicles made their
appearance on our streets. Their attitude towardtheirhosts wasdistant butpolite.On
the seventh day of Passover Germans have arrested the leaders of the Jewish
community. That moment everything happened so very quickly the racetowarddeath
hadbeganformyfamilyand I.LaterthatdayHungarianpoliceburstintoeveryJewish
homeintownincludingmine.AJewwashenceforthforbiddentoowngold,jewelry,or
any valuables. Everything my family and I owned had to be handed over to the
authorities,underpenaltyof death.Sadlywelost everything thatmeantsomuchtous.
Three days later my family and the rest of the Jews hadtowearayellow star.Iasked
myself everyday why me?DidIdosomething?Didmyfamilydosomething?Whyisthis
happening?Allthiswasveryuncleartome.AsIstoppedaskingmyselfthesequestionsI
realized that my family nor I had thefreedomtodoaswepleased.Thetownwassplit
intotwogetto's, someofthepeoplewereforcedouttherehomes.Hungarianpolicehad
enteredthe ghetto andwereyellinginthestreetnearbynotthatlongaftereveryonewas
inthestreets.Thepoliceweretakingroll calls,once,twice,twentytimes.Dayslaterthe
Hungarianpolicecameandmadeusgointocattle car80to100ineach.Therewasvery
little airandverylittle space Ifearedthatmymother may getsickfromallofthis.The
Hungarianpolicethreatened thecarmyfamily andI wereinandeveryothercattlecar
therewas80ofusinonecarifanyonewentmissingwewillallbeshot.Dayspassedand
we pulled into a station that read "Auschwitz." We stopped there for the night and
continued to move the next day, the next day we had arrived in Birkenau. Strange
people came into ourcattle car.AnSSman yelledatusallMentotheleft!Womento
your right! MymotherandIwereseperatedfrommyfatherIyelledmyfather'sname
sothathemayhearmeandhedid.Iruntowardshimbutitwastoolatebecauseofme
my father was shot andI wassentbackwithmymother.I begantocryinmymothers
arms and it had became somewhat clear on thethingsIcanandcannotdo.Theyshot
myfather becauseofmywrongdoingwhydidmyfatherhadtosufferwhatIhaddone?
Itbecameclearthatthese policemenweretryingtoget as manyofuskilledaspossible.
Asthelinedmovedforwardibegantothinktothinkforabetterfuturethanthis.People
shouldn't have to go through this because it's cruel and unfair we should all have the

same rights just like everyone else. Days passed me and my mother worked in the
factories. We longer had names we had numbers on which they labeled us with. The
nextdaysthingsforushavegottenworsewhoeverdisobeyedorrefusedtodosomething
would be sent to death. My mother and I were seperated and I refused to leave my
mother.TheSSmangrabbedmeandtookmefrom my mothermymotheryellNOO!!
NOTMYLITTLEGIRLSSHESALLIHAVELEFT!TheSSmanhitmymotherandshe
passedout.BecauseofmydisobedienceIwassentencedtodeathIshotinthehead.My
motherwasnowaloneandinjuredshehadnoonethereforheranymore.Butbecauseof
mymother'spleatheyshotheraswell.

Hitler and his men killed approximately 6 million Jews. Auschwitz is now the
