Explanatory Notes

Genre is a way of grouping texts by identifying common codes and conventions.


Examples of genre might include:
Film: horror, western, film noir, black comedy, suspense/thriller, wildlife
documentary, etc.
Radio: magazine, talk-show, news, drama, etc.
TV:
soap, sitcom, drama, police drama, reality-TV, Do-It-Yourself, etc.
Print: hard news, features, profiles, backgrounders, reviews, editorials, etc.

Definitions

Explain means to clarify with reasons.

Analyse means a detailed examination that could include carrying the study to
wider implications.

Analyse perceptively means with insight.

Relationship refers to the influence of the genre on society and the influence of
society on the genre, and may include developments over time.

Influences of the genre on society may include: copycatting (imitating clothing,


language or behaviour); changes in societal expectations and beliefs; influence
on other media forms etc.

Influences of society on the genre may include political and economic climate;
ideological, moral, spiritual and social values; technological changes; audience
demand etc.

Development(s) could be technological and/or stylistic changes to the genre


made over a period of time.

Students should study a range of texts to develop their understanding of the


relationship between a media genre and society.

Quality Assurance
1 Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications
Authority before they can register credits from assessment against achievement
standards.
2 Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against
achievement standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to
those achievement standards.
