GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES

4. Describe the relationships among knowledge, decisions and actions in
maintaining life-supporting environments.

SPECIFIC LEARNER OUTCOMES

o

identify intended and unintended consequences of

human activities within local and global environments
(e.g., changes resulting from habitat loss, pest control or
from introduction of new species; changes leading to
species extinction)
analyze a local environmental issue or problem based on
evidence from a variety of sources, and identify possible
actions and consequences (e.g., analyze a local issue on
the control of the beaver population in a nearby wetland,
and identify possible consequences)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will
1. Identify consequences of human activates on a local and global scale.
2. Evaluate different local environmental issues.
3. Illustrate possible solutions to local environmental issues.

Introduction
Have students access the website and begin reading the
introduction.

In groups, students are required to research and

present a local issue where humans have negatively
impacted the environment. Students will complete 3
modules to help get them set up for their research
and presentation. Some of the work will be
individual, while others are in groups. Once students
have completed their modules they will present
their project to the class by electronic means. The
project can be presented in a way that best suits the
students needs, but it must be signed off by the
teacher and accessible online. Students will then
present their projects in groups from various
locations. Students will be marked on their Padlet an
online journal system, as well as, their final project
and presentation. These rubrics can be found on the
rubric page.

Body
1. Students go to www.
padlet.com to create their online
journal board that they will use
throughout the final project.
2. They will create their first
journal entry.
Entry 1 - How do you impact your
environment?
In a paragraph or more write how you
believe you impact your
environment.
It can be in both a positive or
negative way.
3. Next, head
to http://www.footprintnetwork.org and
complete the ecological foot print quiz.
4. After they complete the quiz they
answer the following questions on
Padlet .

Assesment

After module one

is complete,
have students
send the links to
their Padlets.
Assess their
journal entries to
make sure they
understand the
material.

Remind Students that questions must

be answered in full sentences. If you
are using information that is not yours,
make sure to cite your work.
Define ecological footprint?
Why do you think there is two
versions of the quiz?
What were your findings?
Do you impact your environment?
Learning Activity #2
Module 2

1. Students Watch the short clip

and answer the following
questions as journal entry #3 on
Padlet. Each reply should be
approximately 150-300 words.
What are two things ecosystems
provide us with?
What is one human impact
discussed in the video and how
does this impact the environment?

2. Student will use an interactive
gizmo to complete the next task.
This can be found at

/index.cfm?
method=cResource.dspView&Re
sourceID=647
For this task students will alter
variables to collect data on your
prairie ecosystem. Get students
to watch this video which
illustrates how to manipulate
and collect the data.
Video:
https://youtu.be/KUfeffvAsdo
For each variable students will provide
a screenshot of the data and answer
the questions on their Padlet as Journal
Entry #4. There will be three different
variable altered at different times.
Note* * Ensure students Do not alter
them all at the same time. Students
are also able to create a screencast-omatic and post it to their
Padlet. (Differentation)
Grass
What happens when all grass is
removed?
Fox
What happens when the fox
population is removed?
Ferret
What happens when the ferret
population is removed?

3.Students will now find an article or a

news story on the human impact they
discussed in journal entry #3. They will
post their article to their Padlet, as well
as the group resource page. When they
post to remind them to label it as

Learning Activity #3
Module 3
1. Groups will be randomly chosen
by the teacher. It is students job
to contact their groups and
begin the research process.
They must choose a negative
local impact on the
environment. After they have
chosen the topic and decided
how they want to present. They
will send this information into
the teacher, so it can be signed
off. Provide students with a list
of collaborative tools.

Prezi
Wikispaces
Weebly
Google Docs
WeVideo

This will be
summatively
assessed using
a rubric.
Students will be
given the rubric
before they
project.

2. Students will present their work

online to each other using google
hangouts. Each group will have 10- 15
mins each including the discussion to
present. Discussions should take about
5 mins per group.
3. After they have presented and
watched all other presentations answer
they will answer the following questions
on Padlet as Journal Entry #6.
How can you reduce your
Ecological Footprint?
What was the most interesting
part about your research?
How could you teach other
people about these issues?
