How to act
a. Never under compulsion, out of selfishness, without thinking;
b. Dont gussy up (mpopoona) your thoughts;
c. Cheerfulness. Without requiring other peoples help. Or serenity supplied by others.
Joy for humans lies in human actions. Human actions: kindness to others, contempt
for the senses, interrogation of appearances, observation of nature and of events in
nature/world.
And your actions and perceptions need to aim:
a. At accomplishing practical ends;
b. At the exercise of thought;
c. At maintaining a confidence founded on understanding.
You have to assemble your life yourself action by action. And be satisfied if
-
each one achieves its goal, as far as it can. No one can keep that from happening.
But there are external obstacles
Not to behaving with justice, self-control, and good sense.
present itself another piece of what youre trying to assemble. Action by action.
Apply these constantly; use them to train yourself. Nothing is as conducive to spiritual
growth.
He has stripped away his body and realizing that at some point soon he will have to
abandon mankind and leave all this behind has dedicated himself to serving justice in all he
does, and nature in all that happens. What people say or think about him, or how they treat him,
isnt something he worries about. Only these two questions: Is what hes doing now the right
thing to be doing? Does he accept and welcome what hes been assigned? He has stripped away
all other occupations, all other tasks.
This is what you deserve. You could be good today. But instead you choose tomorrow.
Dont make room for anything that might lead you astray, tempt you off the road youve
chosen, and leave you unable to devote yourself completely to achieving goodness that is
uniquely yours. It would be wrong for anything to stand between you and attaining goodness.
On tranquility
If you seek tranquility do less. Or (more accurately) do whats essential. Because most
of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate that you will have more time, and
thus more tranquility. Ask yourself at every moment, Is this necessary? But we need to
eliminate the unnecessary assumptions as well. To eliminate the unnecessary actions that follow.
angry do;
When it is overpowered by pleasure or pain;
When it puts on a mask and does or say something artificial or false;
When you allow you actions and impulses to be without purposes, to be random
because even the smallest things ought to be directed toward a goal;
Concentrate every minute like a Roman like a man on doing whats in front of you
with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, with justice. And on freeing yourself
from other distractions. Yes, you can if you do everything as if it were the last thing you were
doing in your life, and stop being aimless, stop letting emotions override what your mind tells
you, stop being hypocritical, irritable.
You can lead an untroubled life if you can grow and if you can think and act
systematically. Two characteristics shared by gods and real men:
a. Not to let others hold you back;
b. Locate goodness in thinking and doing the right thing;
Four habits of thought to watch for, and erase from your mind when you catch them.
Tell yourself:

And so you have to become an idiot as well? The best revenge is not to be like that.
It all depends on how the mind conducts. All the rest is within its power, or beyond its
control.
Such a person is in touch with what is within him, and what keeps a person undefiled by
pleasures, invulnerable to any pain, untouched by arrogance, unaffected by meanness, an athlete
in the greatest of all contests? The struggle not to be overwhelmed by anything that happens, of
course.
He does only what is his to do, and considers constantly what the world has in store for
him doing his absolute best, and trusting that all is for the best. Because we carry our faith with
us, and faith carries us.
For every action, ask: How does it affect me? Could I change my mind about it? But
soon Ill be dead, and the slates empty. So this is the only question: Is it the action of a
responsible being, part of society?
Things to avoid in your train of thought everything:

Random;
Irrelevant to what your aim is;
Self important;
Malicious;
Soon youll be ashes, or bones. A mere name, at most and even that is just a sound, an
echo. The things we want in life are empty, stale, and trivial. Dogs snarling at each other. Fame
in a world like this is worthless. Remember, nothing belongs to you but your flesh, blood, and
thoughts and nothing else in under your control.
Not just that every day more of our life is used up and less and less of it is left, but this
too: if we live longer, can we be sure our mind still be up and sharp to understanding the world?
Getting the most out of ourselves, calculating where our duty lies, analyzing what we
hear and see, deciding whether its time to call it quits all the things you need a healthy mind
for all those are gone [with old age].
Everything fades so quickly, turns into legend, and soon oblivion covers it.
Life is short. Thats all there is to say. Get what you can from the present thoughtfully,
justly.
Remember:
Matter. How tiny your share of it.
Time. How brief and fleeting your allotment of it;
Fate. How small a role you play in it;
Seeing roasted meat and other dishes in front of you and suddenly realizing: This is a
dead fish. A dead bird. A dead pig. Or that this noble vintage wine is grape juice, and the purple
robes are sheep wool died with shellfish blood. We need to pierce through perceptions to see
what they really are. Thats what we need to do all the time all though our lives when things lay
claim to our trust to lay them bare and see how pointless they are, to strip away their shiny and
fake surface.
Bear in mind that everything that already exists is already fraying (se destram) at the
edges, and in transition, subject to fragmentation and to rot. Or that everything was born to die.
My mind. What is it? What am I making of it? What am I using it for? Is it empty of
thought? Melted into flesh and blended with it, so that it shares its urges?
Bear in mind constantly that all of this has happened before. And will happen again
the same plot from beginning to end, the identical staging. Produce them in your mind, as oyu
know them from experience or from history: the court of Hadrian, of Antoninus. The courts of
Phillips, Alexander. All just the same. Only the people different.
None of us have much time. And yet you act as if things were eternal. Before long,
darkness.
For how could we achieve greatness if we are constantly distracted by things that dont
matter, if we are naive, gullible and inconstant?
That before long youll be no one, and nowhere. Like all the things you see now. All the
people now living. Everythings destiny is to change, to be transformed, to perish. So that new
things can be born.
What is it you want? To keep on breathing? What about feeling? Desiring? Growing?
Using your voice? Thinking? Which of them seems worth having? The fraction of infinity, of
that vast abyss of time, allotted to each of us. Absorbed in an instant into eternity.
In short, know this: human lives are brief and trivial. Yesterday a blob of semen,
tomorrow embalming fluid, ash. Pass through this brief life as nature demands with dignity.
Give it up without complaint.
A trite but effective way against the fear of death: think of the list of people who had to
be pried away from life. What did they gain by dying old? In the end they all sleep six feet under.
Our lifetime is so brief speak and act in the healthiest way.
Practice even what seems impossible. The left hand is useless at almost everything, for
lack of practice. But it guides the reins better than the right. From practice.
Work towards
Only this: proper understanding; unselfish action; truthful speech. A resolve to accept
whatever happens as necessary and familiar, flowing like water from that same source and
spring.
Perfection of character: to live your last day, every day, without frenzy, or sloth, or
pretense.
That nothing is good except what leads to fairness, and self-control, and courage, and
free will.
Constant awareness that everything is born from change. The knowledge that there is
nothing nature loves more than to alter what exists and make new things like it. All that exists is
the seed of what will emerge from it. Did you think only the seeds are the ones that make plants
or children? Go deeper.
A key point to bear in mind: Do not bow before random actions, none not based on
underlying principles. The value of attentiveness varies in proportion to its object. Youre better
off not giving the small things more time than they deserve.

Because anger, too, is weakness, as much as breaking down and giving up the struggle.
Both are deserters: the man who breaks and runs, and the one who lets himself be alienated from
his fellow humans.

Random thoughts
Pride is a master of deception: when you think youre occupied in the weightiest
business, thats when he has you in his spell.
Stupidity is expecting figs in winter, or children in old age.
What doesnt transmit light, creates its own darkness.
Youve given aid and theyve received it. And yet, like an idiot, you keep holding out
for more: to be credited with a GOOD DEED, to be repaid in kind. Why?
Dont waste the rest of your time here worrying about other people unless it affects the
common good. It will stop you from doing anything useful. Youll be too preoccupied with what
so and so is doing and why, and what theyre saying, and what theyre thinking, and what theyre
up to, and all the other things that throw you off and keep you from focusing on your own mind.
Comparing sins the one committed out of desire is far worse than the one committed
out of anger. page 19.
