question carry equal marks.
SECTION-I
QUESTION NO.
01.
Discuss the various factors to be considered for the selection of material for design of
machine elements.
02.

A shaft is transmitting 97.5 Kw at 180 r.p.m. If the allowable shear shear stress in
material is 60 N/mm2.Find the suitable diameter for shaft. The shaft is not to twist more
than 1 in length of 3m. Take C = 80 x 103 N/mm2.

03.

Differentiate between hoop stress and longitudinal stress?

A cast iron cylinder of internal diameter 200 mm and thickness 50 mm is subjected to a
pressure of 5 N/mm2. Calculate the tangential and radial stresses at the inner, middle
(radius = 125 mm) and outer surfaces.
A seamless pipe carries 2400 m3 of steam per hour at a pressure of 14 Kg/cm 2. The
velocity of flow is 30 m/sec. Assuming the tensile stress as 400 Kg/cm 2. Find the inside
diameter of pipe and its wall thickness. Take C= 3 mm for steel pipe.
A steel bar 2.4 m long and 30 mm 2 is elongated by a load of 500 KN. If the poissons
ratio is 0.25. Find the increase in volume. Take E = 0.2 x 106N/mm2.
What is the function of flywheel in engine? In what way does a flywheel differ from that
of governor.

09.

A double riveted lap joint is made between 15 mm thick plates. The rivet diameter
and pitch are 25 mm and 75 mm respectively. If the ultimate stresses are 400 MPa in
tension,320 MPa in shear and 640 MPa in crushing, find the minimum force per pitch
which will rupture the joint.
If the above joint is subjected to a load such that the factor of safety is 4, find out the
actual stresses developed in the plates and the rivets.
What types of stresses are induced in shafts?
A line shaft rotating at 200 r.p.m. is to transmit 25h.p. The shaft may be assumed to be
made of mild steel with an allowable shear stress of 420 Kg/cm2. Determine the diameter
of the shaft, neglecting the bending moment on the shaft..
Explain the design procedure of knuckle joint.

10.

What do you understand by the term riveted joint? Explain the necessity of such a joint.
Explain the procedure for designing a longitudinal and circumferential joint for a boiler.

11.

A plate 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick is to be welded to another plate by means of

double parallel fillets. The plates are subjected to a static load of 80 kN. Find the length
of weld if the permissible shear stress in the weld does not exceed 55 MPa.

12.

Design a leaf spring for the following specifications :

Total load = 14 tonnes ; Number of springs supporting the load = 4 ; Maximum number
of leaves = 10; Span of the spring = 1000 mm ; Permissible deflection = 80 mm.
Take Youngs modulus, E = 2 x 106 Kg/cm2and allowable stress in spring material as 60
Kg/cm2.
