Dear Editor
Readers who enjoyed articles about Helen Renwicks contributions to the Claremont Colleges may also want to know
about her donations to construction of the
old Renwick Gymnasium, in her husbands name, as Judy Wright tells it in her
priceless book, Claremont, A Pictorial
History.
The Renwick Gym was a favored
place to find a pick-up basketball game
for local gym rats like Terry Kneisler,
Ralph Miller, Howard and Steve Sinclair,
Connie Elwell and myself. Perhaps other
readers recall stories of playing basketball, volleyball, badminton and other
sports inside Renwick. Stories and pictures could become newsworthy chronicles of an earlier Claremont.
One Saturday morning in the late 1970s
(a search of COURIER archives could reveal the date), I arrived at Renwick on my
bike, hoping for a game, only to find the
entire building was gone. The lot was
scraped clean except for a small basement
filled with old metal lockers, broken folding chairs and other debris, apparently
soon to be loaded onto the next dump
truck. I jumped down to search the debris
and found two homemade basketball
hoops, which I removed and have been
storing in my garage ever since.
Later I searched the online Claremont
Colleges Digital Library and found several
photos of Renwick Gym, showing it behind Bridges Auditorium, and an interior
photo, dated 1904, showing four track
and field athletes posed below a basketball hoop with support bars extending to
the backboard at a downward angle. I believe the photo shows one of the hoops I
retrieved mounted there on the backboard.

Theres more to the story, but I know
only part of it. The original Renwick Gym
was at least partly destroyed in a fire in
1952. Since the hoops I retrieved were in
use in 1904, they must have remained in
the basement while the new gym was being built over it.

look a little dry in the scorching heat,
it may not be as dire as it seems.

The eucalyptuses that line the eastern entrance to the

City of Trees are equipped with a water drip system to
keep them alive while California suffers through a historic drought, according to Community Services Consultant Dave Roger.
I know when you drive down it appears there is no
water on the trees, but there are drip irrigation systems
in place, Mr. Roger said.
Those irrigation systems drip precious water via a
series of soft brown tubing placed around the trees and
covered in mulch. The tubes, which are about a halfinch in diameter, have drip emitters every 12 inches
that send tiny droplets of water to keep the tree healthy.
The trees are watered twice a week, three hours per
session. Around 270 gallons of water is used on the
trees per week, according to Mr. Roger.
Mr. Roger also noted that the median trees are
drought-resistant and tend to look a little shriveled in
the arid summer months.
In the heat of the summer they tend not to put on
new growth, he said.
The decline of certain trees throughout town is not
due to lack of water, he noted, but due to outside factors such as tree borers and insects. One of the tree borers has affected stands in front of the Bernard Field
Station on the north side of Foothill Boulevard.
Theres one of those I noticed that has a lot of damage due to borers, Mr. Roger said, also noting that
many trees on College Avenue were lost due to borers.
Ultimately, Mr. Roger said the foliage in Claremont
is improving ever since the state relaxed its water restrictions in June. The city has been taking advantage
of these loosening restrictions by watering their city
parks and trees more often, from twice a week to
three times per week.
When the water restrictions were put in place, [the
state] said water no more that 15 minutes at each station, Mr. Roger said, referring to the irrigation heads
at each public park.
That wasnt enough time to cover even the grass,
much less the trees, so the foliage suffered, he noted.
Now, its a slow climb to greener pastures. Not all
parks are created equal, Mr. Roger notesparks with
newer irrigation systems such as College Park and
Shelton Park, have irrigation systems that are using less
water more efficiently. Older parks such as Blaisdell

and Memorial Parks utilize older systems that allow

some patches to get more water than others, Mr. Roger
said.
But outdated irrigation problems could be fixed in
the future through upcoming city capital improvement
projects, Mr. Roger noted. Indeed, an update on the irrigation system for Claremonts Pooch Park is scheduled
for next year, according to the 2016-2018 budget.
The city is also taking soil samples along the Foothill
Boulevard corridor in preparation for the first phase of
the Foothill Boulevard Master Plan.
The samples will provide necessary soil classification data, according to a release from the city, which
will add to the design plan for the upcoming improvement project.
The master plan is a multi-year plan designed to revamp and beautify Claremonts stretch of Foothill
Boulevard. Sampling began on July 18, and will take
about a week to complete.
Mr. Roger also confirmed that the city is in the final

stages of appointing a new arborist. The new hire will

replace former arborist Jeremy Cawn, who left Claremont in April for a position with the city of Glendale.
Weve done interviews and weve selected an individual, Mr. Roger said.
Pending a background check, the new arborist could
be confirmed as early as the middle of August.
Once the arborist is brought on board, he or she will
no doubt have their work cut out for them as the new
arborist for the City of Trees.
The cityalong with Sustainable Claremont, Claremont Heritage and the Boy Scouts of Americais also
recruiting residents to educate the public on how to
care for the trees. On Saturday, July 23 at 9 a.m. at the
Claremont City Yard, volunteers will convene to deliver soaker hoses door-to-door to residents and to provide helpful hints on proper tree management.

committee meeting,
the last of the summer, was
spent fine-tuning the final report
that will be sent to the city council for approval.
The reportwhich was presented to
the committee to make sure everyone is on
the same pagecould be considered by
the city council as early as their first September meeting, according to City Manager Tony Ramos.
Under the proposal, the new station
would be built on the same location as the
existing station and stand two-stories tall,
with about 25,000 square feet overall.
New financing will include some money
from the citys general fund, a $25 million
general obligation (GO) bond and a pay-

ment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) program for

the Claremont Colleges. The Colleges financial contribution has become somewhat of a sticking point in moving forward
with the new station.
Without a firm dollar commitment from
the Colleges, the committee cannot determine how much general fund and obligation bond financing will be needed to pay
for the project.
Part of the committees proposal to the
city council in September is a request for
$250,000 from the general fund, which
was required by the stations architectural
firm, WMM Associates, in order to continue with the design and engineering
plans.
Committee chair Mark Sterba noted
that the multi-layered financing system
starts with the PILOT program and general fund money, with the remainder going
to the voters under a GO bond.
What we go to the residents with is go-

ing to be the gap between what weve already got and what we need to get to, Mr.
Sterba said.
But the exact amount of the Colleges
contribution remains to be determined.
Mr. Ramos told the committee that negotiations are underway regarding the
amount, but it would be difficult to get a
quick answer from Claremont University
Consortium CEO Stig Lanesskog on exactly how much the CUC would pony up.
I wont get an answer back from the
Colleges probably until the end of the calendar year, if Im lucky, Mr. Ramos said,
noting that the arrival of three new college
presidents and the task of getting them up
to speed on the issue is a main factor for
the delay.
Mr. Lanesskog, who is a member of
the committee, was not present Wednesday evening. Mr. Lanesskog has missed
the last four meetings of the committee.
The last full meeting he attended was

March 23.
Claremont Police Chief Paul Cooper
educated the committee on how colleges
contribute, if at all, to municipal police departments. Some private colleges, including the CUC, have their own campus
safety force, but policing powers have to
be granted by the state, he said.
Nine local private institutions surveyed
by the city did not contribute financially to
their citys municipal police departments.
Both Harvard and Yale Universities have
PILOT programs in place, but their money
goes to their respective cities general
funds, as opposed to direct funding for
law enforcement, Chief Cooper said.
The Claremont PD and campus safety
have a memorandum of understanding,
or agreement, which allows the Colleges
to investigate non-suspect and non-evidence property crimes under $5000, which
cuts down on the CPDs time spent at the

crimes.
From 2011-2015, just over 3.5 percent
of total CPD calls were to the Claremont
Colleges. During that same time, the Colleges represented 28.62 percent of all Part
I crimes reported in the city, with campus
safety officers handling more than 90 percent of those crime reports. Part I crimes
include theft, burglary, aggravated assault,
arson and forcible rape. Chief Cooper said
the majority of Part I crimes reported from
the Colleges are bike thefts.
The report Wednesday reviewed the elements previously discussed throughout
the committee meetings, which began in
January: the location of the proposed station, the budget, the financing method,
size and scale.
The proposal could find itself on the
June 6, 2017 ballot, if all of the elements
including funding, council approval and
community educationfall into place, Mr.
Ramos said. Ultimately, it will be up to the
city council to determine when the bond
makes the ballot.

We have one more bite of this apple, I

believe, to really do this right, Mr. Ramos
said.
During discussion, committee member
Frank Bedoya took issue with wording of
$25 million being the maximum, and
called for more flexible wording in the
event the project goes over-budget.
I just think that, having sat on this committee for a number of years, knowing
how this city operates, you put a word out
like maximum and it comes a penny over,
were going to be taken to task, Mr.
Bedoya said.
Other committee members agreed to
use target instead of maximum when
referring to the budget in the council report.
The committee also wrestled with the
lifetime of the proposal, zeroing in on a 20year bond life, which is exactly half of the
40-year life that Measure PS proposed.
Committee member Paul Wheeler inquired about the method of construction,
claiming that if the project uses non-prevailing wage work, it could save 30 percent of the overall cost, or around seven
million dollars.

I really feel that we should spend the

taxpayers money, or ask to spend it, with
as much reverence and hard work as it
took to earn the money, Mr. Wheeler said.
Currently, state public works law mandates that prevailing wage workwhich
includes hourly wage plus benefits and
overtimebe used in city construction of
public works facilities. Mr. Wheeler said
the city could do a lease buyback to possibly circumvent public works law, meaning a private contractor provides construction and the financing package, and
at the end of the financing, the city buys the
completed project for a dollar.
Mr. Ramos said he would talk to city
staff regarding the legality of going around
the prevailing wage, and Mr. Sterba asked
Mr. Wheeler to add information about the
method of construction to the report.
Mr. Sterbas next task is to put months
of information from committee meetings
into a three-page executive summary to
present to the council. The deadline for an
agenda item to make the September council meeting is August 31, Mr. Ramos said.

morning on the usually quiet streets of
Claremont.

Police are searching for a domestic violence suspect who led them on a wild chase that ended when
he crashed into a house. A witness claims the suspect
may have hid out in their garage.
Multiple 911 calls were made just after 2 a.m.
Wednesday morning regarding a woman screaming
on the 1100 block of North Mountain Avenue, according to Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department. Police did not elaborate on what happened
and characterized the incident only as a domestic violence situation.
When officers arrived, a white Ford Expedition was
seen driving away from the area. When police tried to

pull over the driver, the driver failed to yield and a

chase began. The chase lasted about a mile before the
Expedition jumped a curb and crashed into a garage
door of a home of the 700 block of Ridgefield Drive,
Lt. Walters said.
The suspect then fled on foot but was not apprehended by police. Claremont police would not release
his name or a description of the suspect, stating that it
was an active investigation.
The victim suffered minor injuries, including
scrapes on her hand and abrasions, and was transported to a hospital for precautionary reasons, Lt.
Walters said. The garage sustained minor damage.
A neighbor on Ridgefield Drive, who asked to remain anonymous, told the COURIER that the suspect
may have hid out in their home and, apparently, enjoyed a few drinks in the process.

Girl Scouts flourish at La Casita camp despite fires, summer heat

ourth of July had come and gone and,

while most kids their age were starting to get the summertime blues, 63
adventurous Girl Scouts took part in the Survivor Girl Day Camp at La Casita.

Participants in the five-day camp held for Girl Scouts

of Greater Los Angeles from the ages of five to 15 enjoyed
a variety of activities such as learning and practicing survivor camping skills, participating in several badge activities
and listening to speeches from park rangers and firefighters,
who modeled possible career paths for several girls.
What made this particular camp special is that it took
place at La Casita, the beloved historical property the Girl
Scouts recently saved from being sold. Survivor Girl Day
Camp was the first event the LA council had sponsored,
and during the camp the girls took full advantage of all
the amenities La Casita had to offer.
After completing several arduous activities throughout
the days, the Girl Scouts earned several badges for activities
such as, outdoor cooking, first aid, fire building, outdoor
camping, compass-reading and knot-tying.
Beverly Speak, whose granddaughter took part in the
excursion, said she was immensely proud of all of the girls
who were incredibly eager to learn the traditional, oldtimey camping skills that kids just dont do anymore.
Daisy Scouts earned their Vi Petal badge, Brownies
earned their hiking badge, Juniors earned their camping
badge and Cadettes claimed their trailblazer badge.
Savannah Speak, age 7, is a Brownie. She said earning her Brownie Petal felt good and that the camp was really fun. Her favorite activity was archery. She noted that
the biggest challenge she faced was knot-tying.
But now I know how to tie lots of knots, she said.
Another challenge all the Girl Scouts faced was that the
camp took place during the same time as the recent San
Gabriel Canyon Wildfires. Ms. Speak said she was concerned the first day because, although the fire was blowing only a little bit of smoke into camp, the bigger problem was the heat. But the kids and the staff took it all in
stride and completed camp activities while staying hydrated.
A highlight for many campers was watching the waterdropping planes fly overhead to combat the wildfires.
As the temperatures dropped as the days went by, girls
made use of the fire pit, which the fire department allowed,
and built what the scouts call an edible campfire, which
is described as a fun, safe way to learn about how to build
a campfire without actually playing with fire.
At the end of the camp, girls split into several units based
on their ages, and participated in activities and challenges

leaders.
Led by GSGLA staff members Deanne Moore and
Michelle Geathers, seven volunteer adults and 12 older
girls serving as program aides kept the girls engaged and
learning, laughing and singing, and creating memories that
would last forever.
Survivor Girl Day Camp was conceived to build girls
confidence, character and independence. Although some
of the skills mastered are not necessary in the modern world,
the girls were able to discover their adventurous side and
get in touch with nature. Not only did they learn about the
value of teamwork, but they learned about the value of
friendship. Many of the girls shared that they created bonds
with one another that would last long after summer was
over.
La Casita, which was donated to the Girl Scouts in 1947
by Claremonts Pitzer family, is an outdoor education re-

source for Girl Scouts but is available for rent to the community. Adjacent to the Wilderness Park and Thompson
Creek Trail, La Casita is easily accessible but offers a serene
environment, distant from the hustle and bustle of suburban
life. For information about renting the property, contact
Elsa Escobedo by email at eescobedo@girlscoutsla.org
or call (626) 677-2366.
Day and overnight camps are open to all girls, including those not currently registered as Girl Scouts. Visit

Somewhere in the deep summer

by John Pixley

ve been thinking about Rimini and

soup with small noodles. Rimini is a
beach resort town on the eastern coast
of Italy, about 200 miles south of Venice,
on the Adriatic Sea. The kind with large
hotels overlooking a mile or two of
beaches and row after row of brightlycolored umbrellas on the beaches. Think
Campari ads and towel boys.
When I was about 10, my family lived in Ferrara
for a year and we took at least one trip to Rimini to
escape the oppressive summer heat and humidity of
the Po River Valley. We stayed in one of those big
seaside hotels, where we ate in the large dining room
with our reused cloth napkins. It was very elegantat
least my older sister and I thought it was pretty elegant. My younger brother, who was about 8, would
only eat the soup with small noodles.
I have always heard about how everyone who can
abandons New York City during the summer for
cooler places like Marthas Vineyard, The Hamptons
and Provincetown. I guess Rimini is like thissomewhere to get away to. And the biggest time to get
away in Italy is two weeks in August, called ferragosto, to mark the Feast of the Assumption and
also, conveniently, the hottest time of year. It is like
the whole country shuts down and takes a two-week
siesta instead of, or in addition to, the usual two-hour
break in the afternoon.
July in Claremont is when everyone who can takes
time off and gets away. But when I was growing up
herelike when I spent that year in Italy and saw my
little brother eating only soup with small noodles at
that fancy beach-side hotelAugust was when things
shut down in Claremont. The joke was that the sidewalks in the Village rolled up at 5; they really did roll
up for at least a couple weeks in August, if not the
whole month, with some stores shuttered, posting
signs that promised they would reopen in September.
The students used to return in September. This was
before the Colleges switched to the early in, early
out schedule, with classes starting around or before

observer
Labor Day and students coming into town in late August.
It wasnt just the Colleges students returning in
August back then. In the last 10 years, the Claremont
school district did the unthinkable and had school
start before Labor Day. And not just before Labor
Day, but at the end of August.
So July became the new August in Claremont. But
it wasnt just the month that changed. The new August is definitely not like the old August. Yes, the city
council and commissions may be on hiatus this
month, but the sidewalks certainly arent rolled up,
with the multiplex cinema and all the restaurants and
a full slate of live music throughout the summer. I
havent seen many Village stores in recent years with
signs saying closed until next month.
If anything, on some of these summer evenings,
like during Friday Nights Live when bands play
throughout the Village, there appears to be quite a few
more people than average in downtown Claremont.
The stage in Shelton Park makes for a nifty addition
for the Friday evening performances. Its much nicer
than perching on the sidewalk or in the crowded, concrete plaza. Far from being a dead spot during the
summer, whether it be August or July, Claremont is
getting to be a hot spot. Who knew?
Even so, while we may be a hot spot here, Claremont is most often literally a hot spotenough to
close up shop and go on a siesta for a week or two, if
not a month or two?. Yes, it was delightfully balmy in
the days around the Fourthit was downright chilly
when I went to Claraboya to see the fireworksbut I
couldnt help but think that the other shoe would drop
eventually and we would be back to the usual high
90s and probable triple digits.
Indeed, I got a bit alarmed last monthJune!
when there were days forecast to be in the 100s and I

Outerspace explorers first encounter of a

pod of carbon-based life forms.

had to shut all the windows in my house. I thought it

was awfully early to be doing this last-resort, shutting-down summer ritual. Would I be doing this all
summer? Yikes!
But thats nothing. I heard that one day while I was
away last monthyes, still in Juneit had been 113
degrees. Thats 113 degrees! Has it ever been 113 degrees here before? Certainly not that I remember. Is
this a sign of whats to come with global warming?
After all, the rainfall around here was at a record low
in the last five years, even when El Nio was supposed to bring us a record high amount of rain during
this past year. Are we going to be like Phoenix, Arizona, where triple digits are the norm for weeks, if
not months, on end?
Id like to think that my friends who said it was 113
degrees here were exaggerating and that it only felt
like it was 113 degrees. Indeed, on those days when I
was here and it was forecasted to be in the low 100s,
it really didnt feel so hot when I went out.
Whether or not its really that hot, a nice little getaway out of town would be nice. Even if its just a
day at the beach.
Or maybe not.
A recent article in the Los Angeles Times explored
how economic development and changes in the city
have caused more traffic. As downtowns supremacy
declined after World War II, traffic patterns shifted toward the morning and afternoon commute. Now the
pattern has become more complex, the Times reported.
In other words, because of new housing and businesses, constant construction, street closures due to
filming and other activities, there might be traffic on
the freeways anytimeincluding Saturdays, Sundays
and 10 at nightnot just during whats quaintly
called the rush hour or, even more quaintly, the 5
oclock traffic. We dont need an article to tell us this.
Ive been griping about this random, unpredictable
traffic for years, but there it is.
Its enough so that Claremont is all the more an attractive place to stick around, as a hot spot in the
making, even when it gets awfully hot.

Make way for the Claremont ducklings

by Jan Wheatcroft

closed my front door on my way to

walk to the bank down Yale Avenue at
Harrison and, as I came to the corner
near my house, I noticed movement in the
ivy growing up around the sidewalk tree.
Out popped a fuzzy head that jumped down into the
street, followed by nine fuzzier balls of feathery fluff
tumbling after as fast as they could. There they were
a small brown and yellow duck and her babies. I turned
and rushed back up the steps to my front door with my
key in hand. Of course I had left my phone behind, but
I longed to get a photo of this family before they
moved on.
I managed to get the key into the lock, dash in, grab
the phone, rush out, lock the door and press the camera
all in a single movement (or so it seemed). They were
now crossing the street in a neat and compact grouping.
I ran after them snapping away and then a car came
and wanted to turn down Yale Avenue, practically on
top of the ducks. Stop! I shouted, putting up my
hands as if to physically keep that car back and protect
my brood.
The car stopped and a blond head emerged from the
window. When the woman saw the ducks in front of
her car, she too began snapping pictures of my new
neighbors. Then another car pulled up, also unable to
pass, and I kept running up and back waving cars off,
holding my hands up, palms out, policeman style. The
ducks were getting nervous and Mama was trying to
get out of the street. She waddled over to the curb and
tried to climb up, which she finally managed to do, as
did one of the nine babies who followed close behind

her. But the others werent able to scale that mountainous curb. Go to the corner, I shouted to my duck
friend. It is easy to climb up there. She was obviously not listening or not understanding me, and she
ran back and forth by the curb trying to climb up as her
babies ran after her.
Soon there were four or five cars stopped as well as
a few people who had crossed over to see what was
happening. This only seemed to make Mama Duck
more nervous and she began to dash back and forth
across the street and then up and down the street with
those loyal babies right behind her. It was just like
being in the picture book, Make Way For Ducklings,
by Robert McCloskey, which I read to my children
when they were little.
Mama would run to a curb and clamber up by herself and the children would rush to follow her, bumping
against the curb and unable to follow. Finally, she
hopped down, gathered her children and rushed across
Yale Avenue to the corner and up the curb to the sidewalk. The last thing I saw was her tail moving from
side to side with those nine little fluff balls close behind
as they traveled east on the Harrison Avenue sidewalk.

COURIER photo/Jan Wheatcroft

I had snapped as many photos as I could. I had acted

like a traffic warden. I had been surprised when these
ducks popped up one-by-one out of the ivy above the
sewer. I had also been transported back to my young
motherhood days remembering the book I had so enjoyed and, now, I was having my own duck experience.
I have no idea where they went and I wonder if they
are okay. Even with coyotes, raccoons, opossums, dogs
and cats, I hope Claremont is a safe place for them.

New restaurant puts focus on creativity, collaboration

t may sound like its named after the

1970s video game, but House of Pong
Seafood & Grill is actually named
after a local family.
The Claremont eatery, which opened its doors in
December, is co-owned by brother and sister Calvin
and Kaman Pong. Its not easy working with a sibling,
but Mr. Pong said they make it work.
Its yin-yang. What Im good at, shes okay at.
What Im bad at, shes good at, he said. Im the
more passionate chef when it comes to creating
dishes, and shes the more stable chef. Its creativity
versus consistency.
Opening their own restaurant is a big move for the
Pongs, but its something they have been working toward their whole lives.
Born in Hong Kong, they moved to the United
States as kids. Calvin, then in third grade, was enrolled in Mountain View Elementary School and continued through El Roble Intermediate and Claremont
High School.
The elder Mr. and Ms. Pong made their living running restaurants, so it was natural for the siblings to
gravitate to the food industry.
Mr. Pong got his start at 18 when he became a host
and then manager at a Dennys restaurant. When
when he was 20, his family bought CK Caf, a coffee
shop in the Claremont Village, and he dove headlong
into running the business.
Mr. Pong got his first kitchen experience at Benihana where he was trained as a teppanyaki chef. He
honed his knife skills further while working as a sushi
chef for an array of local Japanese restaurants.
Ms. Pong has taken a more stable path, serving as
chef at the Shogun Restaurant in La Verne for the last
seven years. At House of Pong, she runs the kitchen
while her brother works the front of the house. The
entrepreneurs facility with Japanese cuisine has
served them well.
Japanese food is all about presentation and taste,
Mr. Pong said.
Both are evident in House of Pongs crab fried rice.
Its prepared to resemble a live crustacean, with
heaped crab-fried rice for the body, fish roe-legs and
real crab claws as pincers.
When it came to devising House of Pongs menu,
Mr. Pong drew from his sense of funan appetizer of

ing happy hour, was inspired by a trip to Tijuana.

After visiting Boston, Mr. Pong added a lobster chowder to the menu.
House of Pongs menu is Asian-fusion. While the
term sounds trendy, it is the very definition of Hong
Kong cuisine. Its biggest culinary influence is Chinese cuisine, because it was a British colony for so
long, the people of Hong Kong also have a taste for
European food.
Meals in Hong Kong generally include rice or noodles, and both are available in profusion at House of
Pong. These are rice bowlsaccompanied by grilled
tofu, chicken, panko-breaded swai fish, grilled
salmon, ahi tuna, grilled steak or pepper steakand
concoctions featuring udon and ramen noodles.
The menu is sizable, featuring more than 30 appetizers alone, and even larger when you count House
of Pongs many off-menu items. Heres a tip. If
youre feeling adventurous, pose this question to your
server: Do you have anything new or special today?
The Pongs emphasize quality ingredients, using
sashimi-grade salmon and tuna and locally-sourced
produce. They also have forged partnerships with
other local businesses.

Sustainable Claremont, Community Services volunteers work to beautify Claremont

ustainable Claremont volunteers joined the Claremont

Community Services Department to plant trees and shrubs in
four medians of West San Jose Avenue.
Twelve volunteers and their children were
treated to a doughnut, and then dug in to
beautify and improve the environment with
city staff.
Smiles (and sweat) were seen as desert
willows and drought-tolerant roses were
planted. The city of Claremont ensured the
safety and success of the effort by having
police control traffic and community services bring plenty of supplies and supervision.
Residents came out to appreciate the effort, which will bring shade and cleaner air,
as well as colorful flowers to the area.

Sustainable Claremont will coordinating

Still, customers are finding their way

Claremonter Alice Perrault has been

of Pong is excellent.
The food was very fresh, prepared

If youre curious, you may want to

House of Pong offers a $2 sake bomb,

Weird science, cooking at SLICE

hroughout the summer, the Claremont Education Foundation (CEF)

offers classes through SLICE of
Summer, a program that provides students
with classes on an array of academic and
extra-curricular subjects.

The SLICE programs classes are structured to support

enrichment, remediation and advancement.
Two classes offered through the program are Weird
Science and Get Cookin, which both provide a hands-on
learning experience for students. Weird Science is offered to students from first through third grades, and is
designed to teach younger children about the basics of
physical science, biology, oceanology, chemistry and paleontology.
The students learn through a variety of experiments,
problem solving, building, creating and journaling about

the things they experience in the class.

Instructor Scott Boen, an avid mountain biker, former
lawyer, travel enthusiast and transitional kindergarten
teacher at Oakmont Elementary, teaches the youngsters
and guides them through their daily experiments.
[Mr. Boen] has us do cool experiments every day,
said Claremonts Matthew Glovsky, a Weird Science student. He also gave us these journals to write about it.
Recently the students in Weird Science have been conducting experiments to do with geology, such as erupting
volcanoes made of acids and bases, also known as vinegar and baking soda. Other projects have included cracking open his daughter Juliets geode and showing his
students the crystals inside.
Another SLICE class is Get Cookin, a course designed to teach students in grades 5-12 how to be safe
while cooking, kitchen and food terminology and thorough cooking methods.

John York to perform this Saturday at intimate house concert

he house will be rockin Saturday,

July 23 as one of the Claremont
areas famed musicians, John York,
plays an intimate 7:30 p.m. concert at Claremonts Gelencser House.
The guitarist, singer and songwriter
has been doing yearly solo shows at Gelencser since 2008.
Its very informal and its really fun,
he said. Afterwards you get to meet
some of the people. Its a good thing. Its
a really good environment for music.
Most musicians love playing house
concerts, primarily because the audience
is full of true-blue music fans who are there
for a close-up view of artists they admire.
Theyre the kind of audience that

wants to listen, and theyre all old enough

so they dont play with their phones while
youre performing, Mr. York explained.
Its a good thing all the way around.
Mr. York, known as a master of the 12string guitar, among many other instruments, and a fine singer, has been playing,
recording and writing professionally since
the mid-1960s. His most high-profile gig
was as The Byrds bass player for one very
productive year from 1968 to 1969, in
which he appeared on and contributed
songs to two seminal studio albums, Dr.
Byrds & Mr. Hyde and Ballad of Easy
Rider. Mr. York also appears on the
groups Live at the FillmoreFebruary
1969 album.

Prior to his stint as a Byrd, Mr. York was

a member of The Bees, The Sir Douglas
Quintet and worked as a session musician
on recordings by Johnny Rivers and The
Mamas and the Papas, as well as being a
member of the touring band of the latter.
Mr. York has released eight solo records,
worked with fellow ex-Byrds Gene Clark
and Skip Battin, collaborated with Pat
Robinson in the group CRY, has done session work and performed with Claremonts own Chris Darrow and has worked
extensively as a studio musician.
Mr. York continues to play solo shows,
is a member of the Jangle Brothers, plays
regularly with acclaimed singer-songwriter Carla Olson and, since 2008, has
been touring with 1960s icon Barry
McGuire, who had a massive hit in 1965
with the P.F. Sloan-penned Eve of Destruction.
Mr. York was born in White Plains, New
York in 1946 and has lived in the Claremont
area since the early 1990s.
I like Claremont, he commented. It
has a good heart. People in the community are decent people.

I See Hawks unique sound to hit stage at Folk Music Center

cclaimed Los Angelesbased I See Hawks in

LA will headline a show
at Claremonts Folk Music Center tomorrow night.
Hawks has been playing the Folk Music Center annually for the past several
years.
Theyre really nice people, Hawks guitarist and background vocalist Paul Lacques
said of the Folk Center staff. Its a beautiful sounding room and theres so much
history there. Its a high point for us.
Legendary LA guitarist and songwriter
Tony Gilkyson will sit in with Hawks.
Claremont to me is a little bit like
Austin: Austin is surrounded by a giant hostile territory called Texas, Mr. Lacques
said. I feel like Claremont is a similar island of civility and trees amidst the Inland
Empire. And I lived in the Inland Empire.
I lived in Victorville for a while, and I grew
up in Blythe and Bakersfield, so Im not
coming at it from a snobby point of view.
Claremonts just a little bit nicer than the
surrounding territory.
I See Hawks in LAs songs are rife with
humor, literary lyrical content and psychedelically-imbued country, rock and
folk. The band was formed in 1999 and has
released seven records, all to critical acclaim, with the most recent, Mystery Drug,

and Dobro; Rob Waller on lead vocals and
guitar; Paul Marshall on bass and vocals
and Victoria Jacobs (Mr. Lacques wife) on

The band has been writing for months
with a view toward releasing a new record.
Its a very informal process, how we
record, he said. Somehow the songs show
up and we start recording. And sometimes
the demo will turn into the finished record.
Its a very mysterious process to us at this
point. Somehow a record emerges after six
months or so.
Based on that timetable, it looks like the
new collection will be out in 2017.
Mr. Lacques said the band would hit its

We really cant pinpoint how many
shows weve done, so were gonna declare
one our thousandth show, he joked. Its
a lot. Its been great. And after all this time
were really good friends. Its a big family at this point. Were definitely looking forward to jumping into the next [record].
The band members natural chemistry,
earned over nearly 20 years together, is only
strained during the process of pruning the
raw songs and mixing the recorded tracks
with digital software.
The only time it becomes work is
when were editing the songs, Mr. Lacques said. With songwriting were very
simpatico. When it comes time for the remorseless, ruthless surgery, thats when it
becomes more of a task. Mixing is where
it might get a little heated. In the good old
days, you could all put your hands on the
console and mix it live, and now [with the
advent of digital recording] you can take
a couple years to mix and edit a record if
you really want to.
Mr. Lacques is thrilled to have longtime
friend and collaborator Tony Gilkyson on
the bill. Mr. Gilkyson was a member of
1980s MTV stars Lone Justice, did a
nine-year stint with LA punk titans X, and
has released two solo albums of his own
material. He has for years been a sideman
with well-respected songwriters such as
Randy Weeks and Mike Stinson, and has
produced records for Exene Cervenka,

Eleni Mandell, Chuck E. Weiss and Dave

Alvin.
Tonys kind of a big part of our story,
Mr. Lacques said. He was in the Stinson
band, which kind of blew our minds back
in the day. And weve done a lot of collaborating over the years. Our first moment
of watching Stinson was quite the revelation because he just rocked. Weve borrowed a lot from Mike over the years. And
he does a couple of our songs as well, so
it goes both ways.
Mr. Gilkyson will open with a set of his
own tunes, then will be joined by various
Hawks, ultimately sitting in on the headliners set.
His [Mr. Gilkysons] guitar playing is
so spectacular that I think people sometimes
overlook his songwriting. Hes a really
deep, original and masterful songwriter, but
hes so damn good on guitar that people
sometimes miss that. Hes one of our favorite songwriters. The main thing I have
to do when Im playing with him is to focus and not be too in awe of what hes playing, Mr. Lacques said. We count him as
sort of an honorary Hawk.

Is it an insect or a pile of dead leaves?

A number of insects are masters of disguise, with
appearances that help them hide, blend in or look
dangerous. Its a great way for bugs to camouflage
themselves from hungry predators.
One of these is the dead leaf mantis, whichyou
guessed it!mimics the look of dead leaves. There
are dead leaf mantises that live in the rainforests of
South America and in the rainforest of Southeast
Asian countries like Malaysia.
The Malaysian dead leaf mantis, whose scientific
name is Deroplatys desiccate, is gray with dark and
light spots and a dry-looking texture. A shield on its
back adds to the illusion that its covered in dead
leaves. As if its natural costume isnt tricky
enough, the dead leaf mantis often plays dead when
its scared, lying unmoving on the floor.
Looking the way it does not only helps protect the
dead leaf mantis from predators, it helps disguise the

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER
ESTATE OF HAROLD W. HOFMAN, JR.
Case No. 16STPB02270
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the
will or estate, or both, of HAROLD W. HOFMAN, JR.
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by
Richard F. Parker in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that
Richard F. Parker be appointed as personal representative
to administer the estate of the decedent.
THE PETITION requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the
court.
THE PETITION requests authority to administer the
estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
(This authority will allow the personal representative to
take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the
personal representative will be required to give notice to
interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause
why the court should not grant the authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be held on August
25, 2016 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 67 located at 111 N. Hill
St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you
should appear at the hearing and state your objections or
file written objections with the court before the hearing.
Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court
and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed
by the court within the later of either (1) four months from
the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California
Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or
personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of
the California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with
an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If
you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with
the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of
the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or
of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code sec-

19

tion 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available

you a fee for this information. If you consult either of
these resources, you should be aware that the same lender

2256612 of official records in the Office of the Recorder
of Los Angeles County, California, executed by IVAN ALCALA AND ANGELIQUE ALCALA, HUSBAND
AND WIFE AS JOINT TENANTS, as Trustor(s), in favor of MORTGAGE ELECTRONIC REGISTRATION
SYSTEMS, INC. as nominee for GMAC MORTGAGE
CORPORATION DBA DITECH.COM as Beneficiary,
WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER, in lawful money of the United States, all
payable at the time of sale, that certain property situated
in said County, California describing the land therein as:
AS MORE FULLY DESCRIBED IN SAID DEED OF
TRUST The property heretofore described is being sold
as is. The street address and other common designation,
if any, of the real property described above is purported
to be: 24313 SEAGREEN DR, DIAMOND BAR, CA
91765-4210 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will
be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied,
regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the Note(s) secured by said Deed
of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s),
advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of
the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount
of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses
and advances at the time of the initial publication of this

Beneficiarys bid at said sale may include all or part of said
amount. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a
cashiers check drawn on a state or national bank, a check
drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn

association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of
the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. In the event tender other than cash is

Trustees Deed Upon Sale until funds become available
to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by
the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable
to convey title for any reason, the successful bidders sole
and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid
to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee
auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does
not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership
of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible
for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned
off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You
are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by
contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance
company, either of which may charge you a fee for this
information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than
one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to
Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale
may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee,
Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section
2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that
information about Trustee Sale postponements be made
available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those
not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your
sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may
call Auction.com at 800.280.2832 for information regarding
the Trustee's Sale or visit the Internet Web site address

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pursuant to the Municipal Code of the City of Claremont and the California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), Smart Investments,
Inc. has developed the proposed Southwest San Jose Spe-

20

cific Plan (Specific Plan) on an approximately 3.96-acre

site. The Specific Plan would establish land use, development, and implementation framework to allow for the
enhancement and redevelopment of a site located near the
southern end of the City.
The Specific Plan also includes the demolition of the existing 64-room, two-story motel, the demolition of a pool
and spa, the removal of a driveway entry along San Jose
Avenue, and the removal of landscaping and hardscape for
a portion of the area. The demolition of a portion of the
3.96-acre site allows for the construction of a new, fourstory hotel with 121 rooms, pool and spa, and additional
site improvement.
The Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing
to consider the Specific Plan, associated Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND), and Mitigation Monitoring
and Reporting Program (MMRP) on Tuesday, August
2, 2016. The meeting will commence at 7:00 p.m., in the
City Council Chamber, located at 225 West Second Street,
at which time all interested persons are invited to appear
and be heard. Following the Planning Commission decision, a notice will be given for a hearing before the City
Council for Final consideration of the Specific Plan. Following the City Council determination, the Architectural Commission would consider the hotels proposed visual and design characteristics.
NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that with the assistance
from PlaceWorks, City staff has completed an Initial Study
for the Southwest San Jose Specific Plan in accordance
with the Citys guidelines for implementing CEQA. The
Initial Study determined there could be significant impacts
related to Air Quality, Biological Resources, Cultural Resources, Geology and Soils, Hazards and Hazardous Materials, Hydrology and Water Quality, and Noise; however,
through the incorporation of mitigation measures, these impacts would be reduced to less than significant levels. Impacts to all other study areas were found to be less than
significant. An MND and MMRP have therefore been prepared for the Specific Plan. The public review period
for the Initial Study and Draft MND commenced on
June 9, 2016, and concluded on June 28, 2016. Failure
to file objections during the above-referenced timeframe
regarding the environmental determination may constitute
a waiver of rights to object to the environmental determination at a later date.
FOR MORE INFORMATION: Copies of the Initial Study,
MND, MMRP, and applications are available for review
in the Planning Division located at Claremont City Hall,
207 Harvard Avenue. City Hall is open Monday through
Thursday, 7:00 a.m., to 6:00 p.m. A copy of the Initial Study
and MND are available at the Claremont Public Library,
Youth Activity Center, Alexander Hughes Community Center, and the City website (www.ci.claremont.ca.us). For
more information, please contact Associate Planner Luke
Seibert, City of Claremont, P.O. Box 880, Claremont, CA
91711-0880, by calling (909)-399-5483, or via email at
Lseibert@ci.claremont.ca.us. If you would also like to be
notified electronically about this project in the future, please
provide your email address to the email listed above, and
it will be added to the project file.
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
of 1990, any person with a disability who requires a modification or accommodation in order to participate in a city
meeting should contact the City Clerk at (909)-399-5461
VOICE or 1-(800)-735-2929 TT/TTY at least three
working days prior to the meeting, if possible.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER
ESTATE OF WADIE ODEH HASOU
Case No. BP171029
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the
will or estate, or both, of WADIE ODEH HASOU.
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Manal Hasou in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS
ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that
Manal Hasou be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
THE PETITION requests authority to administer the
estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
(This authority will allow the personal representative to take
many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will
be granted unless an interested person files an objection to
the petition and shows good cause why the court should not
grant the authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be held on August
8, 2016 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 99 located at 111 N. Hill
St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you
should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file
written objections with the court before the hearing. Your
appearance may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court
and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by
the court within the later of either (1) four months from the
date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the
California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with
an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If
you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with
the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of
the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or
of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available
from the court clerk.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee
You
are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property
by contacting the county recorders office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee
for this information. If you consult either of these resources,
you should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid
less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time
of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court,
pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as
a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to
learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if
applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of
this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this
Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2015-05272-CA.
Information about postponements that are very short in
duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale
may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to
verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

ESTATE OF JACK D. WORDEN
CASE NO. 16STPB01932
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors,
and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will
or estate, or both, of JACK D. WORDEN
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by
MELANIE HILL in the Superior Court of California,
County of Los Angeles.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that
MELANIE HILL be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
THE PETITION requests the decedents will and codi-

cils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the
court.
The PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
A HEARING ON THE PETITION WILL BE HELD IN
THIS COURT AS FOLLOWS:
Date: August 16, 2016 Time: 8:30 A.M. in Dept. 79 Room:
located at:
Superior Court Of California,
County Of Los Angeles,
111 North Hill Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012
Central District
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you
should appear at the hearing and state your objections or
file written objections with the court before the hearing.
Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a CONTINGENT
CREDITOR OF THE DECEDENT, you must file your
claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58 (b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days
from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a
notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE THE FILE KEPT BY THE
COURT. If you are a person interested in the estate, you
may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form
DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form
is available from the court clerk.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a
trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the
property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear
ownership of the property. You should also be aware that
the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you
are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be
responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being
auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the
property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property by contacting the county recorders
office or a title insurance company, either of which may
charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the
same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed
of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid
less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time
of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or
more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a
court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil
Code. The law requires that information about trustee
sale postponements be made available to you and to the
public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If
you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date
for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299
