MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

4.1

Type
The expanded perlite shall be manufactured ON SITE under properly
controlled furnace conditions from a naturally occurring siliceous volcanic ore
of variable chemical composition typically an aluminium / potassium /
sodium silicate mixture. The insulation contractor shall nominate the source
of perlite ore for Client approval.

4.2

Properties

4.2.1

Perlite Ore: Prior to shipment to site the Perlite ore shall be prepared
according to the Perlite Institute Specifications PI-111 or PI-112 and then
subject to the following acceptance tests:

4.2.2

Samples shall be taken for sieve analysis at a rate of 100 to 200g for every
150 tonnes (approx) of ore. The insulation contractor or Perlite supplier shall
nominate the basis of grading the ore in respect of the sieve size, (Perlite
Institute Specification PI-115) for Client approval.

4.2.3

Samples shall be taken for water content at a rate of 25g for every 150
tonnes (approx) of ore. The total water content of the ore shall be 2% to 4%
by weight (reference Perlite Institute Specification PI-118).

4.2.4

Samples shall be taken for spectrographic analysis by X-Ray fluorescence

methods generally in accordance with ELOT EN ISO 12677:2011techniques (or
other agreed techniques / standards) at a rate of 50g for every 300 tonnes
(approx) of ore. The analysis shall demonstrate the consistency of the ore and

the absence of matter, which could prove detrimental to the production of

perlite for cryogenic use.
4.2.5

Samples shall be taken to check on expandability & properties of the

expanded perlite ore in accordance with the Perlite Institute Specification
PI-307. Alternatively if the insulation contractor can provide previous records
from the same ore source that confirms expanded perlite results then this
requirement may be waived with Client agreement.

4.3

Expanded Perlite

4.3.1

The insulation contractor shall demonstrate to the Client satisfaction that, when
expanded, the proposed Perlite ore can achieve the following properties. Such
proof shall be by conducting tests on the proposed ore or by supplying previous
records of such tests on the same ores.

4.3.2

Thermal conductivity measured in accordance with ASTM C-177 or C-518

specifications shall not be greater than 0.044W/mK at 10C.

4.3.3

Sieve analysis, tested in accordance with Perlite Institute specification PI-115

shall conform to the following table:

4.3.6

Compacted density shall be measured as identified by the Perlite Institute

specification PI-201 and shall be between 48 & 65.6Kg/m3.

4.4

Quantity
Relevant drawings will indicate the volume of the interspace / reservoir to
be filled on each tank. The insulation contractor is responsible for
determining the volume of ore required to achieve this volume and the
required compacted density range of the expanded perlite.

4.5

Certificates
All perlite ore shall be delivered with a certificate confirming the properties
as required by above. Any material non-conformance and rejection during
production shall be recorded. Certificates shall also be produced to record all
expanded perlite test results required.

4.6

Packing
All perlite ore packaging shall be suitable for preserving product integrity
during shipment to & storage at site, usually in 1 tonne plastic lined bags.
Storage requirements shall be confirmed by the Insulation contractor.
All packages to be marked to identify their use / location at site, usually bag
markers or stenciling are acceptable methods.

4.7

Safety
The Insulation contractor shall advise material-handling and all other safety
precautions required at site.
