Wastewater Engineering
VCB 3073
Assoc. Prof. Dr Shamsul Rahman Mohamed Kutty
Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohamed Hasnain Isa

Potable water is one of the necessities of life. Usage of water introduces various types
of pollutant in it and renders it unsuitable for many uses. Treatment and disposal of
wastewater are important activities in the field of civil engineering. This subject
provides a basic understanding of the design and operation of physical, chemical and
biological unit processes in the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters.

1.

To introduce various pollutants in wastewater, their effects and removal

mechanisms.
2. To analyse process parameters and design treatment plant components.
At the end of this course, students should be able:
1. Characterize constituents found in wastewater and apply basic treatment
methods for removal of specific constituents in wastewater.
2. Demonstrate the mechanisms of wastewater treatment.
3. Apply engineering principles to design wastewater treatment processes and
conduct cost analysis of the components in wastewater treatment.
4. Evaluate and solve complex wastewater problems to meet domestic and industrial
effluent discharge limits.
1.
2.
3.

To develop skills in problem solving through assignments, quizzes, tests and

treatment plant visits.
To characterise wastewater constituents through laboratory exercises.
To determine costs of treatment plant components using software.
