is an attempt to access them through the university library system. Especially, full-text online

Digital library: A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats (as
opposed to print, microform, or other media) and accessible by computers. The content may be
stored locally, or accessed remotely.
Advantages of Digital Library:
Here are some of the potential benefits of digital libraries:
The digital library brings the library to the user:
To use a library requires access. Traditional methods require that the user goes to the
library. In a university, the walk to a library takes a few minutes, but not many people
are member of universities or have a nearby library. Many engineers or physicians
carry out their work with depressingly poor access to the latest information.
A digital library brings the information to the user's desk, either at work or at home,
making it easier to use and hence increasing its usage. With a digital library on the

desk top, a user need never visit a library building. The library is wherever there is a
personal computer and a network connection.
Computer power is used for searching and browsing:
Information can be shared:
Information is easier to keep current:
The information is always available
New forms of information become possible
Jimma university library provide two digital library services: - eGranary Digital Library and
Jimma University Digital Library System (JUDLS).

6.2.1 eGranary Digital Library

The eGranary Digital Library is a collection of documents meant to deliver educational Web
content to the subscriber's local area network (LAN). This way, the documents are available
instantly to everyone in the institution. The eGranary "stores the seeds of knowledge" inside the
institution where they can be accessed even when the Internet connection is down. As we say, "If
you can't come to the Web, we'll bring the Web to you!"

In this electronic publishing age, academic institutions including universities have increasingly
recognized that an institutional repository (IR) is an essential infrastructure of scholarly
dissemination. An IR is a digital research archive consisting of accessible collections of scholarly
work that represent the intellectual capital of an institution. It is a means for institutions to
manage the digital scholarship their communities produce, maximize access to research outputs
both before and after publication and also to increase the visibility and academic prestige of both
the institution and authors.
Institutional Repository defined as a set of services that a university offers to the members of
its community for the management and dissemination of digital materials created by the
institution and its community members. It includes commitment to the stewardship of digital
materials, long-term preservation as well as organization and access.
Why our Institution Should Have an IR?
There are many reasons to implement an IR. Here are some critical ones:

To increase the visibility and citation impact of our institutions scholarship

To provide unified access to our institutions scholarship.
To provide open access to our institutions scholarship
To preserve our institutions scholarship

Benefits of Institutional Repository

Opening up outputs of the institution to a worldwide audience;

Maximizing the visibility and impact of these outputs as a result;
Managing and measuring research and teaching activities;
Enabling and encouraging interdisciplinary approaches to research;
Facilitating the development and sharing of digital teaching materials
Supporting student endeavors, providing access to theses and dissertations
Enables a university to publicize its research and teaching programs by enabling access to
the work of its staff and students.
The quality of a universitys academic output forms an effective advertisement for the
institution
To summarize, the potential uses of an IR are: scholarly communication; management and
storage of learning materials, electronic publications and research collections; preservation of
digital research work; building university profile by showcasing academic research work;
providing an institutional leadership role for the library; research assessment; encouraging open
access; and housing digitized collections.
JULS Institutional Repository can be accessed through: 10.140.17.108:8080/repos/, but all of
the resources cannot be made available outside of the JU community due to license restrictions.
