Spug Background

The Spugs are an insectoid species with a very


aggressive nature. They operate on an instinctive
hive level totally alien to humanoid races.

variety of heavy support weaponry, the Exosuit
can provide devastating firepower.

Appearance
Spugs are generally about 2 meters in height,
although smaller sub species are known to work in
the deepest regions of a Spug hive.

Technology
How their technology has evolved is a mystery, a
species with a hive collective mentality does not
normally possess individual creativity able to
develop new concepts. Perhaps it has been the
scavenger Spugs who have brought back
technology from other species which has been
adapted to their own use.

The most common of the Spugs have two legs,


two arms and a bulbous head. Their two large
thermo-compound eyes allow them to see and
detect a wide spectrum of light and heat.
The colour of the Spugs vary dependant on local
conditions. In a cold environment, they are blue or
white, warmer temperate areas will often see
brown and black colours and tropical locations
may see bright green and red markings.

Their use of ballistic and energy weapons is


widespread; from the standard carbine to the
powerful Shard and Laser Cannon, their weaponry
mimics much used by other humanoid species.

Hierarchy

The Spugs can manufacture a wide range of


advanced machinery and weapons. Landing craft
capable of delivering large numbers of warriors
from a hive moon to a planetary surface surpass
many of the dropships used by other humanoid
species.

The Spugs are similar to Earth's Ants and


Termites in many respects, they are formed into
hives with a Queen Spug at its center. The hives
may be either planet based or housed in gigantic
space faring hive moons. The hive moons are
capable of inter-galactic travel and have allowed
the Spug threat to spread to all corners of the
cosmos.

Terraforming And Hive Moons


The location of their original homeworld is not
known, the Spug ability to traverse the vast
regions of the interstellar void has spread them far
and wide.

The individual Spugs are bred for specific tasks,


with hatchlings grouped together to form units
from an early age. Each "clutch" of hatchlings are
then fed a special secretion of hormones from the
Queen's vassal gland which will determine their
ultimate role in the Spug hive collective.

The worlds on which the Spugs have settled are


transformed to make them more hospitable, they
tunnel many kilometres into the planetary crust to
harness the abundant geothermal energy. Above
ground, massive spires rise from the surface to
expel excess heat and keep the underground
labyrinths at a constant temperature.

There are several types of Spug caste, the


workers make up the majority, these are subdivided into specific hive tasks such as tunnelling,
construction and food preparation.

Over time, usually many decades, the climate of


the entire planet will be affected by the expelled
heat and gases from the heat spires.

The warrior caste are fewer in number, but their


responsibility is to guard the hive and acquire the
raw materials to maintain the community.

Hive Moons are colossal warren like constructions


with a seemingly disorganised array of specialist
cambers. Some of the hive moon is carved from
space debris, some is grown and cultivated by
specialist worker Spugs.

Within the warrior caste are various specialist unit


types. The scavenger Spugs scout new territories
and evaluate conditions. Jump Spugs have short
range flight capability and can conduct rapid
assaults. Tactical Spugs are the main infantry
units with varying weaponry and armour, some are
lightly equipped for speed and flexibility, others are

Spug Warriors & Hardware

Exosuit
The Exosuit is the pinnacle of Spug bio-technical
knowledge. An injured Spug warrior may be
selected to be surgically grafted into an Exosuit.
Once installed, the warrior will live out the rest of
his life encased in a toughened armoured shell
bristling with powerful weaponry.

There are several types of drone and some larger


support assets available to the Spug hive.
The drones are all bipedal with the ability to use
complex weapons and machinery.

Omega Drone

The Exosuit has four weapon mounts onto which a


variety of heavy weapons may be fitted, this has
allowed the Exosuit to be adapted to various
configurations.

The Omega Drones are the elite Spugs. They are


fed a special cocktail of hormones by the hive
Queen. Although similar in appearance to the
other combat drones, the Omega drones have
quicker reflexes and tend to be more durable.

The Missile Launcher sub-system has been


created so that it will mount directly onto the Shard
Cannon or the Laser Cannon.

An Omega Drone may be attached to an infantry


unit as a unit leader.

Additional fuel pods are available to allow for


extended field service.

Nexus
The Nexus is a communications specialist able to
rapidly disseminate hive mind instructions. The
Spugs have produced a technological device to
allow for concurrent rather than sequential hive
mind instructions to be issued. This process allows
a single Spug to be in constant communication
with the hive mind and allow other members of a
unit to concentrate on combat.

Drones
The drones are the most numerous of the combat
Spugs. Drones operate in small units as the
infantry for the hive mind. There are light, regular
and heavy infantry units, these are deployed by
the hive as required.

Spug army

Other specialist drone units are known to exist, for


example, the Jump Spugs are equipped with short
range jump packs resembling mechanical insect
wings. These allow the Jump Spugs to make short
powered leaps to close on enemy positions
quickly.

Acknowledgements
The Spugs have been created by Spriggan
Miniatures.

The Drones tend to operate in units of four to nine


warriors although smaller units equipped with
specialist support weaponry are not uncommon.

Scavenger Scouts
As the Spugs harvest a new territory, the use of
mounted scavenger scouts is vital to determine
the disposition of hostile forces or even the best
location for a new underground hive.

The Spugs have utilised various creatures as


mounts, often dependent on the local lifeforms
encountered. The most common mount has been
a large bipedal lizard called a Toranant.

Omega Drone

There are no named characters in a Spug force


and few individuals. The hive is what counts!

Unit leaders or communications drones do exist,


although their function is primarily to act as a
conduit for the hive mind.

There is no rigid unit structure within Spug forces.


Units usually operate in units of four to nine
warriors. Light and regular infantry units will often
have Specialist Nexus Drones attached to provide
additional capability.

Support

The Missile Launcher module is designed to


attach directly to the Shard Cannon.

The Spug Exosuit is the most common of the


support assets available. Its range of weapon
systems allow it to be used in a variety of roles.

Other weapons available to the Exosuit include the


Harpoon Cannon and the Toxflamer.

Exosuits have operated as units consisting of two


to four Exosuits. Alternatively, they will operate as
individuals or as heavy weapons platforms
attached to Spug units.

Custom Exosuit Construction


There are other variants of the Exosuit, the
combinations of weapon systems can be mixed to
any degree.
A common variant of the tactical Exosuit is to
exchange one of the Shard Cannons for a Laser
Launcher.

allowing superior visibility across the battlefield
and allowing supporting firepower to be called in

Harvester

Firebug

The Harvester is a six limbed variant of the


Hightower Tripod. Although not as large as the
Hightower, it requires less resources to produce
and is usually available in larger numbers.

A heavy weapons platform for the Toxflamer has


evolved over the years into the Firebug. Also
armed with 2 Light Shard Cannons, the Firebug
often leads Spug advances to clear out dug in
infantry positions.

The Spug Toxcannon is a projectile weapon which


can unleash a hail of toxic capsules much like a
Machine Gun. When these capsules strike a
target, they explode inflicting a devastating hit.

Although similar to the Toxcannon in appearance,


the Toxflamer has been reconfigured to unleash a
short range blast of toxic goo in a similar fashion
to a flame thrower.

Toxcannon Heavy Weapon

The Shard Cannon is the Spug version of a Heavy


Machine Gun. Its high rate of fire make it the ideal
anti personnel weapon.

The Harpoon Cannon is a large brutal bolt thrower


tipped with a razor sharp barb. When the bolt
damages a target, it may pass completely through
and strike another target in its path.

The Lasher is an extendable metal whip-like


weapon capable of snaring an enemy and inflicting
a powerful electric shock.

The Harpoon Cannon is usually fitted to a vehicle


such as the Exosuit.

A heavy version of the Omega Power Claw is


utilised on the standard Exosuit. Drawing on the
Exosuits large power cell, the Heavy Power Claw
has a higher rate of attack than the Omega Drone
variant.

a target model is
damaged by a Shard Injector, place a single residual
damage counter next to the model. Each time the
model is subsequently activated, it will suffer another
immediate strength (ST) 7 damage roll. There is no
need to roll to hit and the target does not get an armour
save, just the damage roll is made.

Small numbers of the Light Infantry may utilise a


Shard Injector. This is a very rare weapon as it is
not easy to produce.

Many of the support weapons detailed are
primarily designed to be mounted on vehicles such
as the Exosuit.

However, weapons such as the Shard Cannon


may be mounted on a weapons platform and
crewed by a Spug trooper.

The tip of Shard Injector is a single micron thick


and able to penetrate most armour. Once it has
penetrated a target and inflicted damage, the
residual effect of the injected enzyme will continue
to eat away at the target.
