Dear Editor,
Regular readers will know that in the last issue I urged abstention in the referendum as
most of us were too ignorant to have an opinion on such an important issue. Then I read
Charles Watts letter on page 13. Glysowotsit! Who knew? I thought it was all about
Polish immigrants in Norfolk. I made it to the polling station with five minutes to spare.
Phew!
My dear wife, whose name escapes me for the moment, suggested that Mr Watts had
cribbed a load of psuedo-scientific spiel from wikipedia, re-written it - rather badly - and
merely added on at the end the non sequiter: Therefore vote leave .And you fell for it,
you chucklehead!
So I am in the doghouse. I hope you are proud of yourself Mr Watts.
Yours sincerely,
Philip Graham

CONTRITE APOLOGY FROM

CRABTALES.
As Im sure you all know we at Crabtales
are only too willing to apologise when we
make mistakes, however rare that is.
In issue 089 we got the cast of this years
End of Pier Show almost entirely wrong.
SORRY.
The correct information was in the inside
article on page 8. Steve Hewlett who was
wrongly included has his own show at the
Mundesley Festival on 9th August so why
not catch him there and once again Sorry.
No excuses, although that day the man
who normally delivers our information,
cabbages, onions, walnuts, grapes had an
accident. He slipped forward, and the

van door caught his arm and may have

fractured it. Makes you think how lucky
you are! Doesnt it? I mean, here we all
are, with all our limbs functioning.
Quite frankly, if youve got your health,
what else matters?
What a bunch of .................

Dear Editor,
With reference to your front-page headline
and advertisement about the Cromer Pier
Show in issue 089 of Crab Tales. I have to
inform you that your designer got it totally
wrong, well at least 98% wrong!
It is true that comedian Phil Butler is starring
in the show but the other performers
mentioned in the advert on page two and
shown on the front page of your paper
are most certainly NOT in the show. In
fact Ventriloquist and past performer in the
Cromer Pier Show, Steve Hewlett has his
own show in April and the Real Thing have
their own show at the Pavilion Theatre on
Friday 4th November at 8pm.
This years very talented cast are Comedian
Phil Butler, Australian Comedy Juggler
James BuSTAR, Norfolk own Comedy
Impressionist Marea Smithson, Vocalists
Rob McVeigh and Emily Yarrow and the
very hard working Seaside Special Dancers.
A superb line up as I am sure you will agree
for this the 39th year of the last remaining
end-of-the-pier show in Europe.
We are very excited about this years show
and trust that your readers will forgive your
designers faux pas and come along to one
of the best live variety shows in the UK.
Yours sincerely

LOCAL PARKING FEES

INCREASED.

The changes mean that in coastal car parks

payment will be 60p for 30 minutes, 1.50
per hour or 7 for 24 hours. In resort car
parks payment will be 60p for 30 minutes,
1.30 per hour for the first hour and 1 per
hour thereafter, or 7 for 24 hours.
Cllr John Rest, Cabinet Member for Assets,
said: Season tickets and standard car park
charges remain frozen, meaning season
ticket holders can park for as little as 54p per
day.
Mr Rest explained the extra money raised
would help support local services including
Blue Flag beaches, providing public
conveniences and maintaining parks and
open spaces.

Tips For Enjoying the Summer (Without Wrecking Your Health)

Living on the beautiful Norfolk coastline, we all relish this time of year when temperatures start to soar and the coastline is
transformed into an oasis for sun lovers everywhere. This is not all bad news from a health point of view- not only does the sun lift
our spirits (by releasing the happy hormone serotonin) and encourage us to become more physically active, we also know that a
moderate amount of sun exposure is essential for producing vitamin D which is vital for our health.
However the flip side is that excessive sun exposure can be disastrous for our skin, health and overall wellbeing. This article aims to
raise awareness of the dangers of sun exposure and also provide some tips on how to enjoy the sun safely.
Dangers Associated With High Levels of Sun Exposure

Sunburn - Overexposure to the sun literally causes the skin to burn, resulting in hot, red and painful skin. The burnt skin
usually peels after a few days. Treatment for this includes cool baths, aftersun lotions and moisturisers. Painkillers can be used if
needed. If sunburn is very severe medical advice should be sought. Children and babies are at very high risk.

Heat exhaustion - This occurs when the core body temperature rises to 40 degrees Celsius (104 F). Usual body temperature
is about 37 degreesCelsius. Sufferers may start to feel sick, develop headaches, sweat heavily or feel faint. Untreated heat exhaustion
can lead to heatstroke which can be very serious. Treatment includes moving swiftly to a cool area and drinking plenty of cold fluids.
If recovery does not occur within about 30 minutes, urgent medical help should be sought.

Heatstroke/sunstroke - In this serious condition the body temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. At these high temperatures
cells in the body start to break down, internal organs (including the brain) may fail and in extreme cases death can occur. Symptoms
may include vomiting, confusion, hyperventilation and loss of consciousness. This is a medical emergency and 999 should be
contacted without delay. Treatment within hospital involves cooling the body down and replacing fluids with an intravenous drip.

Skin damage - Long term sun exposure can be very damaging to the skin and causes skin ageing, wrinkling, brown spots,
warty growths (known as actinic keratoses) and skin cancer.

Skin cancer- 8 to 9 skin cancers in 10 are thought to be caused due to excessive exposure to the sun. Sunburn especially
increases skin cancer risk. It is vitally important to protect children as sun exposure during childhood is strongly linked to adult skin
cancer risk.
Who is at Risk from the Sun?
The short answer is everyone! Some people are at particularly high risk however and this includes those with fair skin, blue eyes,
freckles and red or ginger hair.
What Can I do to Enjoy the Sun Safely?

Avoid the sun when it is at its strongest. In the UK this is between 11am and 3pm in the summer months (May-September).
Seek out shade during this period (make use of umbrellas, trees, canopies etc).

Cover up. Wide brimmed hats may not be the height of fashion but they are better at protecting from the sun than baseball
caps! Loose baggy T shirts (or long sleeved tops) should be worn. These should be made of tightly woven fabric so as not to allow the
suns rays to penetrate. Wrap around sunglasses provide good protection of the nose and face.

Generous dollops of high factor sunscreen! Anything less than SPF 15 is not of much use. SPF 30 should be used for
children and those with fair skin. It is essential not to overlook those easily forgotten areas; lips, ears, around eyes, neck, scalp, backs
of hands and tops of feet. Ideally sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before venturing into the sun and then reapplied at least 2
hourly (and always after swimming).
The main points above were summarised in a memorable sun protection campaign in the 1980s in Australia and are just as relevant
today: Slip (on some appropriate clothing), Slop (on some sunscreen) and Slap (on a hat)!!!

of the First World War, resulting in over one million

The Battle of the Somme began on 1 July 1916. It is one of

other conflict, before or since, can state such a statistic.

On June 30th to July 1st Vigils were held in many local locations to honour
and remember the Fallen. These photographs are from Cromer.

ITS CLEAR TO SEE.....Norfolk Cleaning Expands Again!

After introducing our new laundry machines at the beginning of the year to cope with the ever growing demand of
the holiday home and domestic customers it is now time for us to turn our attention to windows and gutters. We
have not, until now, been able to offer a window cleaning service. However we are constantly asked to do so by our
holiday home customers so we decided to take the plunge and launch our window cleaning division.
Sean Cousens, Operations Director says this is a really exciting new venture for us and continues our expansion.
Norfolk Cleaning is committed to providing a full and high standard service to all our customers and this new
venture allows us to fulfil another requirement from our current customer base and open up the service to new
customers.
This is a Pure Freedom system which uses de-ionised water to clean windows requiring no detergent and leaving a
sparkling finish. From a tank fitted in the van the system pushes water through the poles to reach up to 70 feet high
meaning that we can cover all domestic and commercial requirements without a ladder.
Whether you are a domestic customer, a holiday home owner or a commercial
business we will be happy to meet your requirements and provide our usual
friendly and professional level of service. In addition to windows we can also clean your conservatory, solar
panels and even caravans to remove dirt and grime and leave a sparkling result.
We have a gutter cleaning system too which removes all the debris from inside the gutters and hoovers it up into
our system - no mess and no waste to dispose of!! A camera at the end of the pipe allows us to show you what it
looks like before and after - and we can even record it for you!
We will initially cover the North Norfolk area from Wells to Sea Palling and North Walsham to Wroxham.
Our aim is to provide a professional, friendly and reliable service. Call our office today for a quote and book in a
regular clean either weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Sit back and relax in the knowledge that we will turn up every
time and do a sparkling job!
In addition to this new division Norfolk Cleaning continues to provide
cleaning services across North Norfolk for domestic, commercial and
holiday home customers. Whatever your need we are here to help from
a one off deep clean, a regular domestic clean, carpet and upholstery
clean, or a commercial clean. Give us a call for a no obligation quote.
As well as cleaning our Laundry Division goes from strength to strength. Whether a large commercial
contract or a smaller ironing service, we are flexible enough to be able to meet all your requirements. We
provide a daily delivery and collection service across North Norfolk or you are welcome to deliver and
collect your own laundry from our base in North Walsham. Again, whatever your requirement from a
weekly ironing service, horse rugs or a hotel we are here to provide a reliable and professional service. Call
the office for a price list and further information.
Norfolk Cleaning Centre provides a large range of cleaning and janitorial products for your
home, hotel, pub and office. These are the very best products which we use ourselves for
our large portfolio of holiday homes which we buy in bulk and are able to offer at very competitive rates. Whether it is toilet rolls,
bathroom cleaner, floor cleaner or more specialised products we will be able to help - and delivery is free to many North Norfolk
postcodes. For further information on window cleaning, or any other service we offer feel free to call our team or visit our website.

Tel: 01692 407690 or visit www.norfolk-cleaning-group.co.uk.

OPENING NIGHT OF THE SUMMER END OF THE PIER SHOW.

The Roar of the Grease Paint, the smell of the Crowd it must be Summer Season on Cromer Pier.
A packed Theatre was treated to a wonderful Opening Night on Saturday. A feast of Variety kicked off with the
whole cast giving us a high tempo Showtime in Cromernumber and with Nigel Hogg on sparkling form in his
role as musical director the whole Theatre was mesmerized by the sensory overload of sights and sounds.
The Compere and Comedian Phil Butler ran a tight and very funny ship, introducing James Bustar a comedic
Juggler who performed the first of many different takes on juggling each showing great skill and comedy.
The tempo of the show never dropped with the end of each segment heralding the welcome return of the
Seaside Special Dancers who showed their range and energy giving us Show dance, Latin and more over the
night. Their routines were never gap fillers but warmly and loudly appreciated by the audience. A massive
credit to Di Cooke Devisor, Director and Choreographer, if she were a football manager id put her forward for
England as her Troupe gave everything all the time.
The lead Vocalists Emily Yarrow and Rob McVeigh have very different instruments but this only afforded a
greater variety of performance. Rob showed how to capture an audience with his powerful solo performance,
the theatre totally on his side well before his big finish. Emily finished the first half with a medley of songs
from The Sound of Music with children from Marlenes School of Dancing melting the hearts. The
familiarity of the songs and her warm and satisfying delivery left all of us heading for the bar happy.
It was very different when Emily gave us a glimpse of her Classical training with a brave set of Opera. Not
only could you see how comfortable she was in this arena but i felt a tangable change in those around me as she
transfixed the hungry Culturte Vultures and produced one of the highlights of the evening.
With a less well defined role the Comedy Impressionist, Marea Smithson still gave us laughs galore with a
range of popular characters as she popped up throughout the night. I loved Blakey from On the Buses but
i suppose you need to be a certain age, most of us were by the way. Her rendition of Madge from Benidorm,
complete with Rascal delighted us all.
It should be pointed out that Phil Butler was the glue holding this wondeful night together. He could do a one
man variety night such are his talents but the audience participation and sheer humour were a joy. He even did a
moving light show, very hard to explain but very good.

A FIRST NIGHT TRIUMPH.....SEE IT !
