The Mentality Shift in Workplace Longevity:

A Multi-generational Case Study
Here are the details

I am conducting Dissertational research

Study seeks to identify the variables that for instance cause

Baby Boomers to work at an organization for 20-30 years, while
Millennials job-hop every 3-5 years

Conducted on multinational organization; workforce has

representation globally

Multigenerational case study of the 3 distinct generational

groups(While various professional studies may classify these generational groups differently
the dates listed below are supported by scholarly, peer-reviewed sources)

o
o
o

Baby Boomers (1946 1964)

Generation Xers (1965 1980)
Millennials (1981 2000)

Focuses on the impact of HR functions & retention strategies

o

Quit rate: 2%
Layoff and discharges: 1.1%
Job opening rate: 3.9%
Hire rate: 3.5%

Logistics of Research

10-15 interviews of employees, majority being at the corporate level

o
o
o

In person (Preferably)
Telephone
Face time or Skype

About 3-5 employees need to represent the 3 generational categories

Data collection timeframe is: February 2017 May 2017

The anonymity of this research will preserved and enforced through a system of coding
o

For example ALL person(s) interviewed will be represented as

Participant A or
Subject A-1

This is a study that is based entirely on HR workforce retention, and will not report any sales,
operational, or marketing elements of the company

All research conducted, analyzed, and produced will be pro bono (free) to the organization Can
be used/not used at the organizations discretion. All that is needed are the coded & anonymous
results to be used for my dissertation. Company name can also be omitted and coded.

Additional Note for Consideration

It is my desire to conduct a Qualitative study that necessitates the
use of 10-15 coded interviews.

o *However, if it is more feasible to have a short survey
distributed to employees (instead of interviews), then I would
certainly welcome the opportunity to conduct a
Quantitative study

Quantitative study would necessitate a distribution of a short
survey to at least: 100 250 employees

o Survey(s) would be anonymous
o Provide the organization with more holistic data
Increased sample size = better exemplification
Increased sample size = better representation of
target population

The direction of my research largely depends on

the type/amount of research-access granted by the
organization.

o A Qualitative study allows respondents to exhibit a deeper

level of cogitation and rationale, hence the need for only 10
15 participants

o A Quantitative study fundamentally compares and contrasts
data more from an ordinal context that draws conclusions
from a general perspective through the discernment of
identified relationships, which gives the researcher the
ability to acknowledge emerging trends.
