Mini Transmedia Lesson Plan

Group 3: Chancee Glover, Kim Hill, Nakisha Fambrough (Quiz Revolution), &
Korey Johnson
Digital tools used: Emaze (Chancee Glover), Powtoon (Kim Hill)
Grade: 8th Science; Unit: 2 (Energy) Lesson: 4
Key Standard(s) addressed in this Lesson: S8P2
Time allotted for this Lesson: 50 minutes
Key Concepts in Standard(s):
S8P2. Students will be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy.
c. Compare and contrast the different forms of energy (heat, light, electricity,
mechanical motion, sound) and their characteristics.
S8CS10. Students will enhance reading in all curriculum areas by:
c. Building vocabulary knowledge
Demonstrate an understanding of contextual vocabulary in various subjects.
d. Establishing context
Explore life experiences related to subject area content.
SCSh6. Students will explore global warming, the problem of ozone depletion in the
stratosphere, alternative energy sources, and environmental issues associated with
nuclear power.
Essential Question(s):
What is environmental sustainability?
What forms of energy do we use in our daily lives?
What forms of energy are harmful to our environment?
How can we conserve energy to save the supply of natural resources that we
have and lessen the threats of global warming and pollution?
What are carbon neutral alternatives are available?
Why global warming is a problem?
Vocabulary:
energy
law of conservation of energy
heat energy
light energy
electrical energy
mechanical energy
sound energy
energy conservation
pollution
global warming
environmental sustainability

carbon neutral

Concepts/Skills to Maintain:
Energy is found everywhere on Earth. We use energy to function in our daily lives.
Students should be able to identify the forms of energy in daily activities.
Pre-assessment:
Students will take a five-question multiple-choice quiz about the forms of energy and
energy conservation.
Opening/Activating Strategy:
Teacher will ask students to discuss environmental sustainability in pairs and come up
with a definition for the term. Teacher will allow a few groups to share their thoughts
with the class when finished.
Strategies for Teaching and Learning: (Mini-Lesson & Work Session)
1. Students will create their own digital graphic organizer on environmental
sustainability including all forms of energy previously learned about in class.
2. Students will be responsible for reading, analyzing, and taking notes over the
information on the environmental sustainability website. Students should
include in their graphic organizer all of the topics outlined on the website.
3. Students will also be required to reference two of their own sources in the
graphic organizer that they complete.
4. Students will have one class period to complete the research and digital
graphic organizer of their choice.
Assessments:
Teacher will assess student-created digital graphic organizers on environmental
sustainability.
Students will take pre and post assessment on forms of energy and environmental
sustainability.
Teacher will walk around classroom, monitor student work, and pose questions to
students to assess their progression through the assignment.
Technology Applications:
Students will be reading the information on the environmental sustainability website
that includes multimedia that engages students in a unique form of literacy related to
science. Students will also be choosing a digital tool to create a graphic organizer
summarizing the information that they research and read about on the website.
Suggestions for Differentiation:
Low-achieving students will work in pairs to complete this assignment so they can
assist each other in using the digital tools to complete the assignment. Gifted students
will create their own piece of multimedia that they would want to use to teach some

else what they have learned about energy and environmental sustainability.
Closing:
Teacher will ask students to write down three ways that they can conserve energy or
use energy differently in their own their own lives based on what they learned in class
through the environmental sustainability website and their own research.
