WORKSHOP STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING DOCTORAL

RESEARCH AND INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL PUBLISHING AS PART OF THE

DOCTORAL RESEARCH PROCESS 2016
I.

INTRODUCTION
The strategic role of higher education is more popular in the three major discourses:
(1) teaching university; (2) research university; (3) the bastion of civilization which are
reflected in Tridharma universities. Universitas Gadjah Mada is one of the university that
recognized as a world-class research university. This label require the productivity and
publication of research articles. The productivity of research could be applied in community
service as well.
Therefore, the Publisher and Publications Agency, University of Gadjah Mada will
hold workshop. There are two workshops which will be conducted in one day:
1. Workshop 1: Strategies for Successfully Completing Doctoral Research
This workshop will be based on the award-winning program Demystifying the
Thesis, with a range of strategies for graduate researchers and their supervisor for
all stages of the research process.
2. Workshop 2: International Journal Publishing as part of the doctoral

research process
This workshop will be based on an outlining why international journal publishing
is increasingly expected as part of the doctoral research process, and offering
strategies for achieving international publication outputs.
II.

OBJECTIVES
II.1 Workshop 1
1. Provide successful strategies for working effectively with supervisors,
understanding how to work with theory, developing a meaningful and
manageable research question, reviewing the literature in a way that
demonstrates how the student is both building on and going beyond what
others have written, designing and writing effective chapters, linking
paragraphs to produce continuity and flow, and a technique for reviewing
chapters before submitting them to the supervisor for feedbackEncouraging
lecturers, researchers and students on writing a scientific article as well as
published on the national and/or international journals.
2. Empower and equip doctoral researchers to tap into their own creative powers,
experience greater autonomy and produce more original research outcomes.
II.2

Workshop 2

1. Share a range of the strategies we use for helping students produce high
quality publications as part of the doctoral research process.
2. Enable doctoral students to identify the different forms of publication relevant
to their researchsuch as conference papers, book chapters, journal articles,
and publishing their thesis as a bookand for assessing the quality of these
publications in terms of journal impact factors and rankings.
3. How to avoid predatory and vanity publishers
4. Strategies for integrating publications with their thesis, and understanding
authorship issues and the peer review process.

PARTICIPANT
Workshop Strategies for Successfully Completing Doctoral Research and
International Journal Publishing as Part of the Doctoral Research Process 2016 participants
are lectures, researchers and postgraduate students at Universitas Gadjah Mada,
Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
