Dr. Samir Al Kotoub
I am an Env. And Water Resources Technical Adviser I was acting as UNDPs Water Resources Projects
Counterpart (Artificial Recharge Project), of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture (MMAA),
State of Qatar, specializing in Water Resources and Environment (Assessment, Development, and
Management). Interested in applied hydrogeo-environmental research, and special interest in the field of
rising water levels beneath cities, Salt-Water Intrusion, Artificial Recharge Studies, hydro-geo-waste
disposal studies (Landfills), Deep Drilling, and Environmental Impacts Assessment, Groundwater
Vulnerability, Pollution Risk Assessment, , Decision Support System. Design Flood Peaks, Study on Road
Network Development. Awarded an Appreciation Letter from the Under Secretary of UN.
I was born in Damascus, Syria, holding the following academic qualifications:

I worked as Water Resources Expert for ACSAD (The Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones
and Dry Lands) Arab League, Damascus, Syria from 1973 to 1991, in the field of implementing and
supervising several water resources projects in the Arab world (Syria, Sudan, GCC Countries, Yemen,
Jordan, Libya and Morocco).
I am involved in organizing several water resources (training courses, workshops, conferences, and
teaching trainees of the Arab countries (field and office) in cooperation with national, and international
organizations (BGR, GERMANY), (BRGM, France), (BGS, U.K.), UNESCO, UNDP, and WHO.
I am a member of The Geological Society of London FGS, IAJE, IHP, and Qatar GIS. I have
published in the journal of Hydrology, IAEA Vienna Publications, ACSAD Publications, PSIPW GIS, and
others. In addition I have experience in preparing UNDPs contracts, Project Documents, and in depth
Evaluation. Application of Water Resources Computer Programs, modeling G.W., contaminant transport
modeling, remediation and relevant subjects.
I have been assigned as a Chief Technical Advisor of UNDP project in Libya titled Strengthening
National Capacity in Water Resources Monitoring, UNDP Project LIB/97/008, 1997.
I was awarded a position of water protection technical advisor, at the Ministry of Municipalities,
Environment, and Water Resources, Sultanate of Oman, since October 2000, working on Groundwater
Vulnerability, and Pollution Risk Assessment Projects in the country. (Conservation and Protection of Water
Resources Department).I have joined DHV/IBG as a Senior Advisor, and Local Project Coordinator, in the
field of, Damascus Water Supply from Coastal Area Project. Recently, I have been assigned as JICA Expert
(Japan Gov.), The Study on Road Network Development in Sultanate of OMAN, 2004-2005.Assigned Referee
of Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz International Prize for Water 2004,KSA.UNRWA,2007 Project Syria. Until
now Head of Env, and Water Consultancy Group.

Major projects that have had a significant personal involvement include:


- Artificial Recharge Study in Northern Qatar UNDP Project (QAT/91/002). The project aims at the study of
Borehole injection technique to augment Northern deteriorating freshwater reserves by establishing Hydrogeophysical investigations, conducting borehole testing and artificial recharge trials and running a Solute
Transport model. The study leads to a large-scale recharge and aquifer management scheme to the
Northern part of Qatar in cooperation with UNDP.
- Deep drilling projects at different parts of Qatar.
- Planning and execution recharge wells at different locations of the State of Qatar in the field of aquifer
management plan for groundwater augmentation purposes. And environment.
- Preparation of landfill project documents at the national level.
- Preparation of Hydrogeo-Environmental Map (characterization & evaluation of water disposal areas).
- Wellfield Protection Program, Sultanate of Oman.

The investigation comprised of; reconnaissance and appraisal of antecedent studies, Drilling 32 deep
boreholes, Well completion, Test pumping, wells development, Surface geophysical studies, and Water quality
assessment at different parts of the UAE.

Senior Hydrogeologist:
Traditional water works in the Arab Countries; Regional Project. Responsible for the assessment, and
occurrence of Foggaras Aflaj, Cisterns, and related historical structures in the Arab Countries.
Preparation of Ad hoc Country Reports, the outcome of this project is the preparation of an international
publication on The Regional Project for the Rational Utilization of Water Resources in Rural areas of the
Arab Countries with Emphasis on Traditional Water Works. (ACSAD - UNESCO 1985)
* Application of self-potential Geophysical method to determine the Natural groundwater flow in Foggaras
Aflaj system, planning, execution of field measurements, presentation and interpretation, Damascus Syria, ACSAD.
1978 - U.K.
Working on contract funded by North West Water Authority awarded to the University of Birmingham to
study the Merseyside Permo-Triassic Sandstone Aquifer. The study conducted for the M.Sc. in the application
of surface resistivity, and borehole geophysical techniques to an investigation of saline groundwater in the
Lower Mercey Basin, North Cheshire, and South Lancashire, England.

- Hydrometeorological, Hydrogeological and Hydrochemical survey of Dawwa basin project at Syria.
