Advantages and disadvantages of lyrics training activity to assess listening and pragmatics. How it relates or not
to the Chilean classroom context.
Advantages of using this sort of resource to assess listening and pragmatics is very open. Taking into account
that the aim is very high and students must know a range of vocabulary, this resource admit teachers to
evaluate listening comprehension through a different and no formal way. Students will be no under pressure and
they will be free to try over and over again to complete the song, having as a parallel benefit that they will know
new vocabulary and the exact spelling of some words.
Disadvantages of using these resources is that some students can feel uncomfortable with the activity because
of the songs that they have to play. In addition, sometimes-electronic devices can fail, the activity will be no
completed, and at that, time teacher must have a second option in order to maintain the attention of the
students.
This type of activities are not related to the real Chilean classroom context, because of the requirements of the
activity, taking into account just the level of English that students need. However, this can be applied in any level
of English having in mind the level that will be assessed.

Students will have a self-evaluation where they can show their perspective of the activity.
