Case Study: An 18 year Transformation of The University of


Cincinnati: Building a Contemporary Campus
Hargreaves Associates worked with the University of Cincinnati
over an 18 year period as both Master Planners and Landscape
Architects in the $3b transformation of the campus.
During
that period the master plan was updated twice to address
evolving issues.
The first Master Plan addressed and anticipated evolving
trends and challenges to create a dense, urbanized, pedestrian
campus that reversed a historic pattern of sprawl; the second
to address issues of quality of life and a 24 hour campus to
respond to anticipated resurgence of on-campus residences and
distance learning, and third to anticipate issues of community
relationships, growth and integration with an evolving urban
context.
As a result of this transformation the campus is a vibrant
pedestrian realm, to quote Blair Kamin, Chief Architecture
Critic for the Chicago Tribune: "Following a brilliant master
plan by landscape architect[s Hargreaves Associates], that
campus heart now beats 24/7.
The landscape architecture
and architecture builds upon traditional notions of place
making for urban campuses, but results in a truly contemporary
campus.
