Code.
(2)TypeII.TypeIIbuildingsshallbeofwoodconstructionwith
protective fireresistant materials and onehour fire resistive
throughout:Except,thatpermanentnonbearingpartitionsmayuse
fireretardanttreatedwoodwithintheframingassembly.
(3) Type III. Type III buildings shall be of masonry and wood
construction. Structural elements may be any of the materials
permittedbythisCode:Provided,thatthebuildingshallbeone
hour fireresistive throughout. Exterior walls shall be of
incombustiblefireresistiveconstruction.
(4)TypeIV.TypeIVbuildingsshallbeofsteel,iron,concrete,
ormasonryconstruction.Walls,ceiling,andpermanentpartitions
shall be of incombustible fireresistive construction: Except,
thatpermanentnonbearingpartitionsofonehourfireresistive
construction may use fireretardant treated wood within the
framingassembly.
(5) Type V. Type V buildings shall be fireresistive. The
structuralelementsshallbeofsteel,iron,concrete,ormasonry
construction.Walls,ceilings,andpermanentpartitionsshallbe
ofincombustiblefireresistiveconstruction.
Section 701. Occupancy Classified.
(a) Buildings proposed for construction shall be identified
according to their use or the character of its occupancy and
shallbeclassifiedasfollows:
(1)GroupA.ResidentialDwellings
GroupAOccupanciesshallbedwellings.
(2)GroupB.Residentials,HotelsandApartments
Group B Occupancies shall be multiple dwelling units including
boarding or lodging houses, hotels, apartment buildings, row
houses,convents,monasteries,andothersimilarbuildingeachof
whichaccommodatesmorethantenpersons.
(3)GroupC.EducationandRecreation
Group COccupancies shallbe buildingsused forschool orday
care purposes, involving assemblage for instruction, education,
orrecreation,andnotclassifiedinGroupIorinDivision1and
2orGroupHOccupancies.
(4)GroupD.Institutional
GroupDOccupanciesshallinclude:
Division 1. Mental hospitals, mental sanitaria, jails, prisons,
reformatories,andbuildingswherepersonallibertiesofinmates
aresimilarlyrestrained.sad
Division 2. Nurseries for fulltime care of children under
kindergarten age, hospitals, sanitaria, nursing homes with
nonambulatorypatients,andsimilarbuildingseachaccommodating
morethanfivepersons.

Division 3. Nursing homes for ambulatory patients, homes for

children of kindergarten age or over, each accommodating more
thanfivepersons:
Provided, that Group D Occupancies shall not include buildings
usedonlyforprivateorfamilygroupdwellingpurposes.
(5)GroupE.BusinessandMercantile
GroupEOccupanciesshallinclude:
Division 1. Gasoline filling and service stations, storage
garagesandbootstoragestructureswherenoworkisdoneexcept
exchange of parts and maintenance requiring no open flame,
welding,ortheuseofhighlyflammableliquids.
Division 2. Wholesale and retail stores, office buildings,
drinkinganddiningestablishmentshavinganoccupantloadof
lessthanonehundredpersons,printingplants,policeandfire
stations,factoriesandworkshopsusingnothighlyflammableor
combustiblematerialsandpaintstoreswithoutbulkhandlings.
Division 3. Aircraft hangers and open parking garage with no
repair work is done except exchange of parts and maintenance
requiringnoopenflame,weldingortheuseofhighlyflammable
liquids.
(6)GroupF.Industrial
Group F Occupancies shall include: ice plants, power plants,
pumping plants, cold storage, and creameries, factories and
workshops using incombustible and nonexplosive materials, and
storage and sale rooms for incombustible and nonexplosive
materials.
(7)GroupG.StorageandHazardous
GroupGOccupanciesshallinclude:
Division 1. Storage and handling of hazardous and highly
flammablematerial.
Division 2. Storage and handling of flammable materials, dry
cleaningplantsusingflammableliquids;paintstoreswithbulk
handling,paintshopsandspraypaintingrooms.
Division3.Woodworkingestablishments,planningmillsandbox
factories, shops, factories where loose combustible fibers or
dust are manufactured, processed or generated; warehouses where
highlycombustiblematerialisstore.
Division4.Repairgarages.
Division5.rcraftrepairhangers.
(8)GroupH.AssemblyOtherThanGroup1
GroupHOccupanciesshallinclude:
Division 1.Any assemblybuilding witha stageand anoccupant
loadoflessthan1000inthebuilding.
Division 2. Any assembly building without stage and having an
occupantloadof300ormoreinthebuilding.
Division3.Anyassemblybuildingwithoutastageandhavingan
occupantloadoflessthan300inthebuilding.

Division 4. Stadia, reviewing stands, amusement park structures

notincludedwithinGroupIorinDivision1,2,and3ofthis
Group.
(9) Group I. Assembly Occupant Load 1000 or More Group I
Occupancies shall be any assembly building with an age and an
occupantloadof1000ormoreinthebuilding.
(10)GroupJ.Accessory
GroupJOccupanciesshallinclude:
Division 1. Private garage, carports, sheds and agriculture
buildings.
Division2.Fencesover1.80metershigh,tanks,andtowers.
