Volunteering at Bowthorpe Care Village

Now that the care village is open and tenants and residents are settling in
to their new homes, we are seeking volunteers to help in a number of different roles. We are particularly keen to recruit volunteers to help with the
Corner shop, so that when people come down to buy everyday items for
their meals or snacks, there is a friendly face to greet them, and someone
to have a chat with, as well as to help them with their purchase. We also
need volunteers to be an extra pair of hands in the various activities sessions if you enjoy singing, flower arranging, craft activities, board games,
bingo, or just having a chat with an older person with great
experience
of life, then this is for you! Or perhaps you would enjoy
volunteering as
a befriender to an older person visiting every so often for a cup of tea and
a chat, and perhaps to accompany them on a stroll round the garden? As a
new project, the volunteering roles are developing, according to the interests of residents and volunteers alike.
Want to know more? Contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator at the care village
on bcv@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk, or phone 07500 258311.

Some summer safety advice.
As summer is technically here, we want to take this opportunity to give
some valuable advice to residents reference security and safety.
Keep ground floor or accessible windows shut and locked in
rooms you are not using.
Don't leave doors and patio doors open.
Remember to lock up properly before going to bed.
Remember, insurance companies often will not pay out if a
burglary is a result of an insecure door or window.
If you are carrying out DIY to your home, don't leave ladders
and tools out. Keep them locked up.
Make sure you lock side or rear gates.
Do not do business at the door. Often companies who tout at
the door for gardening and home improvements turn out to
be bogus.
If you are in the back garden having a barbeque, don't be
tempted to leave the front door open for your visitors to let
themselves in.
If you are going out for the evening remember to use a timer
switch on lamps or radios to give the impression someone
is home.
Also remember that dogs die in hot cars, please dont leave
pets in cars, even if it is for 5-10 minutes as far too often
they can have tragic consequences.
We dont want to scaremonger people but we do want to keep you informed
and want you to be safe this summer. Be sure to keep up to date with live
information via the @NorwichPoliceUK Twitter account. Events, information
and news is regularly posted on here daily.

This year this internet celebrates its silver anniversary. Twenty-five years
ago, on 6th August 1991 it made its debut. It was developed over eleven
years by Tim Berners-Lee. Twenty-five years later there are reported to be
over 1 billion websites (a decade ago there were 100 million websites.
Nearly every company and charity and organisation has a website. We
take it for granted that if we want some information we `Google it.
Although I appreciate that not everyone is online, increasing numbers of
people regularly use the internet for a variety of reasons, including shopping and gaming. Occasionally you come across something worth finding.
Some time ago, I found this cyber version of Psalm 23. Dont rush it. Allow
Gods Word to become his word for you today. May your reading of this
psalm lead you into the restful presence of the Lord.
PSALM 23 CYBER VERSION
"The Lord is my programmer, I shall not crash.
He installed His software on the hard disk of my heart.
All of His commands are user-friendly.
His directory moves me to the right choices for His names sake.
Even though I scroll through the problems of file, I will fear no viruses,
for You are my backup;
Your password protects me;
You prepare a menu before me in the presence of my enemies;
Your help is only a key away.
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life,
and my file will be merged with His and saved for
ever."
Every blessing for a restful summer,

Christian Aid week

May 15th 21st 2016.

Jean Goldsmith on 22nd May aged 84

Bowthorpe Church, this year, raised 1350 for Christian Aid. This goes to the
poorest people in our world, whatever creed or none. We give you thanks for your
support in this fantastic effort. We collected 328.70 at Roys over two days and
from 14 roads we collected 491. The remainder of the money was made at our
Quiz evening and various donations.
This years Christian Aid theme was featuring Morsheda and her family, living in
Bangladesh. Her home regularly suffers from bad floods and she lives often surrounded by water, inside
and outside of her home.
For 250 a plinth could
be built lifting her home
up 6 8 feet, keeping her
family safe and providing
enough space to grow
food or have a cow.
There are many families
like Morsheda surviving
in these terrible conditions.
Thanks once more for
your support.

SUMMER EVENTS

ASHWELL COURT
Hello again. I hope you have enjoyed a good summer so far in this changeable weather. However we are being promised a heatwave in August.
As I said last month we have had a summer outing to Bury St Edmunds and
since then have had our coach trip to Dunwich in Suffolk, and a delicious
meal in the Floral Tea Rooms, which are on the beach. This is however a
lovely indoor restaurant and is an ideal destination because the coach can
drive into the large car park and right up to the door of the Floral
Tea Rooms. Their fish and chips are known worldwide, but there is
also a varied menu.. This is a most interesting destination because
Dunwich is now only a small village but was once the capital of East Anglia
until the encroaching sea and severe storms buried the city. There are
numerous churches and buildings under the sea, which divers have recently
discovered and although I do not believe that the church bells can be heard
ringing under the waves, it is still an interesting place to visit
We have also enjoyed our annual Strawberry Tea with entertainment by
Dick High. Once again many thanks to our entertainment team for the
magnificent tea. In addition we have also had our annual Ham Salad tea,
which was as usual greatly enjoyed.
On a very sad note unfortunately I have to report the death of our friend and
fellow resident, Mary Cowan, who has lived at Ashwell Court since it
opened. Although recently having to use a wheel chair she still supported
our activities and really enjoyed playing darts at our darts club. She is
greatly missed. We extend our sympathy to her family.
Thats all for this time. Best wishes.

BRADECROFT
The sight of Poppies raising their heads in my garden makes my
heart sing. Blossoms, Roses in a multitude of colours and many other
flowers blooming in local gardens. We have watched Blackbirds taking
worms etc to their babies hidden in a nest in one of our bushes . Also listening to the beautiful sounds of his singing on high. All of the joys of Summer.
The sunshine has enabled our friends and neighbours at Bradecroft to
spend time together catching up and sharing our lives. The world is in such
a rush. It is so special to sit and relax. It is also such a joy to see all of the
wonderful pet dogs and cats, all very loved.
Special wishes to Corrina who has been in hospital. She so needs her new
wheelchair to enable her to have her independence back.
May I send kind thoughts to those who are poorly. We wish you well.
Happy Days. Keep smiling.

Bye for now.

Day trip to Bury St. Edmunds . Wed. August 10th

A day browsing the market or seeing the historic sights. Depart Bradecroft
10am We have a minibus hired. 16 places only. Cost 12 per person to be
paid when booking. See Bob White (no.39) Return home approx. 4.30.
Unfortunately, due to the limited space it is first come first served and
unable to take wheelchairs.

A Sunday afternoon walk in early June. I had decided to

explore the new path between Bowthorpe Care Village and Bunkers Hill
Wood. A busy Jay flew across my path as I turned onto the path: new
smooth asphalt stretching up the hill, lined by street lights, black fencing
and the care home on one side, the wood edge on the other. Within 20 paces I
see 10 kinds of wild flowers: red & white campion and deadnettles, foxglove, buttercup, garlic mustard, blackberry, poppies and purple toadflax. I am
looking at the wood edge, a low strip of flowers, brambles and nettles fronting
young trees and bushes where the wood ends. The wood edge is often a valuable
habitat with a great diversity of plants. This one is below
electricity cables so every few years, before any growth has
reached the cables, the company cuts everything down. It
looks horrible for a few months until it all starts to grow again.
Oddly this is good for wildlife and it helps explains the richness
of the flowers. Walking on, there is bladder campion and cow
parsley, then dock & sorrel with their strange green & red flowers, plantains, red & white clover, honeysuckle, tall pale spikes
of weld, splashes of bright vetch and some large

plates of creamy elderflowers nearer the wood. Yellow flowers

high up on spindly broom mirror little globes of yellow low down
on black medick. I am not far from the hill where all the bluebells
were last month. If the trees just below the hill were
coppiced
there would be a splendid view right across the Yare valley.
A path from the Care Home would make a lovely walk for the residents. I am having a lovely walk just along the asphalt. The glory
is the red campion. It hybridises with the white and so comes in many shades of pink.
In places there are stands of it, pointillist scatterings of varied pink. On the other side
of the path the care home towers white over intense scarlet daubs of poppies where
the soil has been turned over. The path turns a corner but there is still a wood edge:
of the tree belt they put in years ago when Bowthorpe was first planned. There the
glory changes and the red campion is mixed with the brilliant blue flowers of green
alkanet. And at the next corner as the display peters out is herb robert and cranesbill. I walk up back to Clover Hill road and the flowers are meagre. The wood edge
really is the place to be. But in a last effort, just before the road, you should see the
combination of poppy and the pale lilac of wild radish!

Roys Wroxham Ltd Donate 4000 to

East Anglian Air Ambulance
On 9th June several members of staff from Roys
of Bowthorpe had the pleasure of visiting the
EAAA hangar at Norwich airport. Roys staff
received a great reception from the EAAA team,
enjoying a tour of the hangar and the helicopter,
learning all about the life saving equipment
needed. It was clear what a close team the
EAAA has and how thankful they are for all donations they receive. The charity does
not receive any funding from the government and relies purely on donations and
fundraising from the public. With each mission costing several thousands of pounds
and equipment costing tens of thousands of pounds every penny helps to keep the
service running.
Roys staff presented the
EAAA with 4000 on the
visit, this is money raised
by the sale of 5p plastic
carrier bags in Roys 8
stores. The 5p carrier
bag charge came into
place in October with the
staff nominating the
EAAA as their chosen
charity to receive the
money raised. Over the 8
months from October
Roys and Highway
Garden and Leisure customers have raised over
15,000 for the charity.
The EAAA is a service
that may be needed by
anyone within East Anglia and has saved
countless lives, Roys and
Highway Garden and
Leisure are thankful to
their customers for raising this money to help
towards keeping the
charity running.

Bowthorpe WI were delighted at

the start of our June meeting when it
was announced that our
membership had reached 50. We were celebrating our birthday in style, joined by guests from
neighbouring WIs for Bollywood dancing and a buffet.
Our next meeting will be 4th July, so it seemed appropriate to have a talk about American quilts. We will also
be discussing our forthcoming trip to Cambridge. The
coach will take us to the river for a trip by punt, then it's a walking tour
taking in King's College. After all that there should be time for a bit of retail therapy before the coach brings us back home.
The WI is a non-political and non-religious organisation which is open to
all women over the age of 18. As an educational charity we arrange
workshops and speakers to fulfil the objectives of the organisation, but we
always aim for friendship and fun.
We meet at the Bowthorpe Church Centre on the 1st Monday of the
month at 7.30pm and would love to be announcing our 60 th member!

The daily mile

Goodbye to our Year 2 pupils

You may have walked past

our field at 8.30am and
wondered what is
happening. Each morning,
children and staff are
coming to school bright and
early, to run a mile before
lessons begin. An excellent
way to keep fit and get our
brains ready for learning.
Well done to you all.

We have reached the end of

another busy, yet wonderful year
at Clover Hill. Pupils, staff and
families have worked hard and
we have achieved pleasing
results at the end of the year.
As always, we will be sad to say
goodbye to our Year 2 pupils,
but we know they will continue
to shine and make new
friendships in their next schools.
Best wishes from us to you all.

The Eco Council have

with various initiatives to
help make our school even
more environmentally
sustainable. Thanks to all,
including staff and all of our
pupils for their curriculum
work! We are applying for
the renewal of our Green

Our children in Key Stage One

continue their Africa project.
They are really thinking about
people in other countries who
may be less fortunate than us
and need our support. Our
pupils have decided to support
the send a cow scheme. They
will raise money to provide a
cow which will change the future
of an African family and help to
build sustainability.

has been very hot

recently and it is important
to keep plants hydrated.
Instead of using a hose pipe,
why not buy collect rain
water in a butt or large
container? You can then use
a watering can to water the

cheaper for you and it is
better for the
environment

As you may remember after an article in Bowthorpe News last Summer, West
Norwich Lions had a collection for little Leo, the five and a half year old lad
who suffers with Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
Leo can make lots of noise and claps a lot but has very little speech and will
probably never have more than four words in his vocabulary.
Mowatt-Wilson syndrome critically affects his movement, learning and understanding, but in spite of this Leo enjoys life immensely.
Leos Mum, Lydia, wanted to raise funds to buy him a special bike that would
have back support and a harness to keep him in place, plus leg and ankle
support for his feet.
West Norwich Lions took on this project and raised the money with help
from Sinclair International, Roys, Costessey Co-Op and the Marlpit Social
Centre, plus many local people.
Leo now has
his bright new
bike and loves
it.

The West
Norwich
Lions would
like to thank

who helped.
