Needling protocol All points are needled bilaterally except for GB-26 Daimai, and
Liv-14 Qimen.
Needle Liv-14 Qimen on the right side, pointed laterally between the ribs, with a 1015 degree insertion, and GB-26 Daimai on the left side, angled toward the back. St27 Daju and Ren-6 Qihai are needled at a 90-degree angle. Use direct moxa after
needling Indications Abdominal obesity
High cholesterol
Fat metabolism imbalances
Abdominal and hypochondriac distention and pain
Damp heat
Constitutional toxins in the Dai Mai
Comments GB-26 Dai Mai is discussed in Chapter 5on the Tendinomuscular
Meridians, under Wandering Skirt syndrome. Indications include abdominal bloat,
obesity, anger, frustration, and an inability to make a decision. The patient is sitting
on the fence, and manifests phlegm, or lack of clarity in bodymindspirit. TCM
describes an imbalance in Daimai as a feeling of sitting in cold water. Therefore,
direct moxa is highly recommended. This Japanese acupuncture protocol indicates
that only the left GB-26 Daimai is to be treated. This is most likely due to the Wood
Element hara reflex, which is palpated only on the left side of the abdomen. Only
the right Liv-14 Qimen is indicated because the Liver organ is on the right side of
the body. The indications for Liv-14 Qimen were discussed under the Seasonal
Allergies Treatment in this chapter. When Qimens Exit Gate is closed, imbalances of

anger, frustration, short temper and possible addictions and binge eating can arise.
Obese patients also have imbalances in their fat metabolism. St-27 Daju is an Earth
point which frees the Intestines, and when out of balance, manifests as an inability
to let go of depression and co-dependence. It indicates problems with digesting not
only food, but also thoughts and emotions. Ren-6 Qihai treats exhaustion, fatigue,
depression,
Spleen-related abdominal distention and weight issues. A person with weight
problems often cannot digest fats. In this case, the patient could have developed a
buffalo hump at the 7thcervical vertebra (C7), and problems with the pancreas
manufacturing or secreting digestive enzymes. This treatment protocol is also
effective with for patients with high cholesterol issues. In Sensei Naganos
experience, patients lost weight after they were treated with direct moxa every day.
Patients with a fast pulse lost 10 lb a month without regaining the original weight

Liv 1 (this point is excellent for reducing craving for fatty and creamy
foods).
LI 4, TW 6 and St 25 (constipation points).
Against sweet cravings
Sp 1 with moxa only (Ren 12 with moxa also helps).
Obese patients are often overweight in one area of the body. If they are
overweight in the middle, the upper and lower warmers are often empty. In
this case it is useful to tonify the yin and yang aspects of these warmers, in
order to distribute the fullness evenly ( Figures 7.13 and 7.14 ). It is also possible
to break the stagnation in one body warmer, by working on the back:

points to tonify upper warmer Ren 14, Lu 1, UB 13, UB 15, P 6

points to tonify lower warmer Ren 3, UB 23, UB 28, K 7 and UB 67.
Treatment to move the stagnation of dampness and
fat in one warmer
The patient stands or lies on the abdomen for this treatment.
Tap with a plum-blossom hammer on a line 1 cm parallel to the back
midline vertically downwards. The line should be tapped several times until a
red skin reaction is obtained. The level of tapping is as follows:
thorax from the level of C6 to the level of T6
abdomen from T7 to L2
lower abdomen from L3 to S4.

What to do against a swollen face, obesity or cellulite

Avoid full-fat milk and dairy products.
Avoid refined carbohydrates and sugars.
Avoid raw and cold foods.

Drink warm water.

Avoid thick sauces and soups more watery sauces and soups are better.
Have a hearty breakfast, moderate lunch and a light evening meal before
6 p.m. A watery soup made from onions, leeks, spinach, celery, tomato,
mushroom and cabbage with a small amount of meat or fish for flavour
is a good evening meal. Two or three small bowls of this soup can be
eaten in the evening if the patient is particularly hungry.
Patients who feel they are missing out on family time can use the evenings
to take a walk, go for a swim or play a game with their family instead of
sitting at the table. If the familys main meal is in the evening, set aside
your portion and store it in the fridge for lunch the following day.
