SIMATIC Product Life Cycle Management

Overview

Product Life Cycle Management

Product Maturity Announcement
Product maturity announcement is intended to provide our customers with

advance notice about products that are beginning or - in case of system changes
- are going to begin the mature phase of Life Cycle Management and to help
customers plan for the future with Siemens Automation systems.

How should a Customer Plan?

Plan and budget in time before spare parts of products that have been
announced to be phased out are no longer available (10 years after mature
announcement dependent the respective product family)
Plan a transition strategy with the assistance of the Siemens representative to
benefit from the advantages of the innovated automation concepts
 Manage customers spares stock

Siemens Automation products follow an overall Product lifecycle of three major stages: Active, Phase-Out (alternately called
Mature) and Discontinued.
Stage I Active: Standard Catalog Product: This is the product in the current catalogs or CA01.
Stage 2 - Phase-Out Product: (Phase-Out and Mature terms are used interchangeably) Once a product is declared to be in
Phase-Out (Mature), there are two phases that vary by product family.
Final Purchase: All products are intended but not guaranteed available for quantity purchase up to one year.
1:1 Swap: After the one year period, products will be serviced on a 1 for 1 repair and replacement basis only
through the duration of the Product Family's Phase-Out period or as long as supplies last, whichever is sooner.
Stage III Discontinued: No repairs; no spares, no technical support available
Pricing can also vary during the product life cycle as costs change. A recommended alternative is also offered when

possible.

Life Cycle Status

Where does this leave our Customers?

With SIMATIC, our customers made the right choice.

When a product is going to be matured, we will continue to deliver spare parts and perform
repairs up to the following 10 years (see slide 4). After this period we can no longer offer
Technical Support for the products concerned.
Only after the total discontinuation the product is no longer available
 Alternative systems are always available
e.g. Simatic S7 (cost, performance and architectures) after the maturity of S5.
Example
The Simatic S5 PLC (predecessor of the Simatic S7 controller) represents the life cycle of core
Siemens automation products. Production of the S5 PLC began 1982. In 2002, Siemens
announced that in 2003 some of the S5 PLC products would be changed to "Phased-Out"
status. Other S5 PLCs were phased out in 2004 and 2005. The S5 PLC enjoyed a production
run of 21 years. It will continue to be serviced through the 10 year duration of the "Phased-Out"
period. For all intents and purposes, the S5 PLC line had a useful life cycle of 31 years. (This
does not include paid technical support, which will still be available after 2013.)
