SMALL SCALE COOPERATION PROJECTS

CREATIVE EUROPE
DEA DLINE 5th OCTOBER 2016

PROJECT FICHE: NET WORK OF HISTORICAL RE-ENAC

TMENTS
The AICCRE Veneto (Veneto Region section of the CEMR - Council of
European Municipalities and Regions) is supporting the Municipality
of Montagnana in setting up European transnational projects aimed
at enhancing its cultural activities and events.

Background information
Historical re-enactments have a l ong tradition in Europe. Well known already duri
ng the roman age, these entertainment activities offer to the general audience, the
possibility to better understand and get known about the history and cultural
background of specific areas, through recreational events and interactive
experiences suitable for families, young and elder people, local and international
audience, tourists and general public.
The revitalisation of less known territories in Europe, through the enhancement of the
historical identity, contributes to the improvement of innovation and creativity in the
cultural sector. Cultural and creative organisations actually, not only support the
growing dimension of such traditional events but often preserve specific know how
and skills (sartorial techniques, production of handmade equipment, costume
designers and set designers techniques), which might be spent in other sectors and
offer job o pportunities thus contributing to the income growth of the concerned
territories.
The medieval event Palio dei 10 Com uni Montagnana - Italy
Every year, in September, the Municipality of Montagnana organises, together with t
he whole territory called Montagnanese composed by 10 different municipalities, a very
important histo rical re-enactment

Called Palio dei 10 Comuni with

horse race, ridding ten horses representing
the municipalities of
Montagnana (ancient Sculdascia).

During the Palio of Montagnana, the

walled city reconstructs historical events in a
me dieval context and
for the two days of celebration, shows and performances historical parades, street
medieval markets, games, tests of skill, jesters, jugglers, flag throwers, riders,
challenges and finally the suggestive fire at the Castle are organised. There are also
g uided tours to the historic monuments of the town.
The event attract more than 30thousand visitors every year with an average number
equivalent to the inhabitants of the entire area. The organisation of the event involves a
huge nu mber of people, organisations, association and creative industries and in 2016
the 40th edition of the Palio will be held.

Montagnana is a little village near the city of Padova, in the north east of Italy, with a
very big and precious castle, and is host to this medieval event every year. The
Palio has always been one of the most typical Italian festivals during the Middle
Ages, and was started off to celebrate historical events via horse riding. The
historical origin of the Montagnana Horse race goes back to 1366, it celebrates the
final victory of Padua against the Veronese Army and also the death of Ezzelino III da
Romano, who very cruelly represented the Emperor Federico II.

The project idea

Improving the international cooperation among cultural players in the fields of the ree nactments events can contribute to stimulate interest and strengthen the role of
cultural players in the definition of potential new professional opportunities.
On the other side, the key challenges identified by the project are the following:
creative players involved in the organisation of re-enactments events have specific
competences and know.-how, but their potential is partially unexplored for several
reasons:
The lack of international c omparison and contamination with other similar
realities in Europe;
The lack of familiarity with new technologies and their potential use;
The still partially unexplor ed use of innovative approaches for audience develo
pment.
The lack of common defined policies for the valorisation of such traditional events at
European level.
Objectives of the project
On the basis of these assumptions, the project's overall objective is to attract a
wide and generalist audience (that usually is a non-cultural audience) to cultural
contents, through the re-enactment event, easy to understand and get experienced
about.
Specific objectives:
To create a network among the involved historical European re-enactment s events in
order to facilitate the exchange of operators with the aim of testing innovative
approaches for audience development;
To propose and define common professional contents for the involved operators;
To develop job opportunities n sectors closely related with the re-enactment (ta
iloring, carpentry, joinery, history of costume, fashion and armour);
Raise awareness among polic y makers defining common policies for the valorisation
of such traditional events at European level;
To be able also to exploit the concerned territories as tourism destinations.

Expected results/impact
One publication dedicated to the promotion of a minimum of three concerned events

able to promote and exploit the involved territories and their cultural values (material
and immaterial heritage).
Comparison analysis of re-ena ctments in order to establish the minimum
requirements and quality standards to be shared at European level.
Training workshops on professionalism linked to the events: tailoring, carpentry,
joinery in order to increase job opportunities
Organisation of 3(?) historical re-enactments events closely connected and jointly
promoted;
Improve the international valu e of the involved events through the participation of
representatives from other countries.
Organisation of one travelling exhibition on historical re-enactments to promote, from
a cultural point of view, the areas involve d in the project.
Analysis of how policy-makers consider the historical re-enactments. In the Veneto
Region (Italy) there is, for example, a regiona l dedicated law.
