Should Poverty be Everybodys Problem?

Although many nations continue to undergo development and progress, almost

every country in the world is still struggling to eradicate poverty. The gap between
the rich and the poor still continues to grow which makes the world seem like two
different worlds entirely.

Many people say that poverty is everyones problem. This means that regardless of
status, everyone must work together to eradicate poverty.

The rich and the powerful, such as multinational corporations, institutions, and
influential people have the power to make decisions and policies that could affect
how a country fares economically. Sometimes, the poor is the one that is affected
the most. Because they dont hold much power to make a change in society, it is
everyones civic duty to help them.

On the other hand, people who claim that poverty is not everyones problem explain
that:

Governments exist to ensure a better and peaceful life for everyone that they
govern. Therefore, it is not everyones problem to eradicate poverty because it is
the duty of governments to do so. Many members of society who live comfortably
are not obliged to help the poor.

Poverty is a choice. It is true and unfortunate that many people are born into poor
families. However, only they have the power to change their living conditions.
Therefore, it is not reasonable to make poverty a universal problem since many poor
people continue to make bad choices despite the help that they are given.
Guide Questions:

1. Why should the rich and powerful help in eradicating poverty?

2. Why do some argue that poverty is not everyone's problem? Who
should deal with the problem of poverty?
3. Why was it said that poverty is a choice?
4. What are some pragmatic reasons for the rich to help solve poverty?
5. Does the rich have a moral obligation to help the poor? Why or why
not?

Vocabulary:
Eradicate - to get rid of completely or destroy something bad:
Obliged - to force someone to do something, or to make it necessary for someone to
do something:

How did World War I directly influence the beginning of World War II?

The two World Wars are two decades apart, but they are somehow related with one
another. World War I was caused by several factors such as the creation of mutual
defense alliances, imperialism, militarism or arms races between nations, but the
most immediate reason is the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

On the other hand, the Second World War was caused by Hitler and the Nazi Party,
fascist governments, the Great Depression, and the expansion of Japanese territory.
All these factors do not seem to have any relationship with one another. The direct
influence of World War I on World War II is that the treaty that ended World War I
triggered most of the major causes of World War II.

The Treaty of Versailles is one of the peace treaties that ended World War I. It was
signed by Germany and the Allies at the Palace of Versailles near Paris on June 28,
1919. In this treaty, Germany was identified to be the one responsible for the Great
War, so it was obliged to pay huge amounts of money known as reparations. The

war already put Germany in dire situations, and because of the treaty, it was put
into more military and economic turmoil.
The humiliation and hardships that Germans experienced because of the Treaty of
Versailles and the Great War made it easier for people like Adolf Hitler to convince
Germans that another war was necessary. One can say that the combination of a
weak economy, an unstable military force, a feeble government, and people full of
rage and anger made Germany hungry for change. However, the wrong leaders
made them believe that waging a war is the only way to achieve that change.
Guide Questions:
1. What factors led to the onset of World War I? What about World War II?
2. What was the impact the Treaty of Versailles on Germany?
3. In what way did the first world war usher the second one?
4. In your opinion, can a new Hitler still emerge in this day and age? Why
do you think so?
5. Will there be a third world war? What do you think would be the cause
and how would it be fought?

Vocabulary:
Militarism - the belief that it is necessary to have strong armed forces and that they
should be used in order to win political or economic advantages
Reparations - payment for harm or damage:
Feeble - weak and without energy, strength or power:

Is easing the commercial use of drones acceptable? Why or why not?

The use of unmanned aircraft systems, more popularly known as drones, is

becoming more and more prominent these days. Companies now use drones to take
pictures and videos as a part of a paid service, for industrial surveillance,
professional security, and telecommunications services. Because of this increase in
the commercial use of drones, governments are considering easing regulations to
make it possible for companies to maximize their use. People have different
opinions about this. Some people, myself included, are in favor of this.

The main reason behind this plan is to boost the use of drones, especially because
we are all living in a highly technological society that is bound to be more advanced
in the coming years. It is illogical for governments to be too restrictive on the
commercial use of drones because this device is actually helping a lot of different
companies and businesses in providing better service to people. With the support of
the government, companies will be more responsible with the commercial use of
drones, and people will be assured of receiving a better quality of service.

Korea is one of the countries that support easing the commercial use of drones. In
fact, it already lifted regulations that are too restrictive such as those implemented
in the U.S. and the European Union. Korea now allows drone-related businesses as
long as they do not compromise the safety and security of the people. These days,
drones can be freely used for entertainment, delivery, and other purposes around
the country.

For those who think that easing the commercial use of drones will only cause
problems in society, such as the loss of employment for some people like
photographers, delivery men and the like, the involvement of governments in such
an issue is out of bounds. They say that controlling the use of technologies is
something that the government should delegate to more knowledgeable institutions
in the private sector.

Guide Questions:
1. Why are governments considering whether to ease regulations on the
commercial use of drones?
2. What is the current state of drones use in Korea?
3. What problems could arise from the widespread use of drones?
4. What regulations should be put in place to secure people's welfare
before we start using more drones?

5. Are drones and other machines going to take the place of human
laborers? What makes you think so?

Vocabulary:
Prominent - very well known and important:
Surveillance - the careful watching of a person or place, especially by the police or
army, because of a crime that has happened or is expected:
