Description of the students

In the school, there are 263 students; however, in the class we picked up to create
the artifacts, which is 2 level A, there are 31 student where 16 of them are men and 15 are
women. They are all in a range of age between 17 and 24 years old. They are all Chilean
and in terms of religious or political ideologies, none of them is extremist. That is to say, that
if they are or not believers or follower it is not an evident factor in their behaviour.
Additionally, in relationship with the cognitive and social skills there is a huge gasp.
First of all, there is a group of students with an advanced level of English (this, in relation to
what is expected of high school students) and the others with a very basic level. Secondly, in
terms of social skills there is a myriad of different styles in the same classroom. For instance,
there are some apathetic students who are not interested in initiating conversations, that
does not mean that they have a problem related to autism, they are just focused on their
attention. There is another group (most of them) with an evident tendency to talk, and so on.
Some of them talk a lot, others talk less, and other talk only when someone asks them
directly; Nonetheless, beyond the fact that they talk or not, they always speak in Spanish.
To conclude, the cognitive levels do not have a variation in term of anomalies, the
students are all able to perform and use the foreign language, if the teacher finds the
strategies to motivate them and improve their level of proficiency. The base that these
students have in their previous educations, does not show an impact in their domain of the
English, because according to the students with best mark and level of proficiency, their
learning process was developed through videogames, movies and music.
The sources from which we have obtained the information that we have presented
above are: some interviews with the teacher (that actually were conversations after the
lessons, nothing formal), website of the MINEDUC, website of the institution, observations of
my guide teacher and observation of the students, observations of the physical and social
environments of the institution. These sources have providing us the informations enough
that we required to create the artifacts.

The factors that we are going to take into consideration for the artifacts we are going
to design, are the interest of the student in visual media, music and the information we

process now according to the social environment in which the students are involved in.
Because, it will allow us as a teacher to carry out updated resources into context, in order to
make the learning process more significant and authentic.
In the program provided by the MINEDUC, the contents for adult education are all
related to work, as if they do not have other interests, or even supposing that the students
context were centered in the a working environment. Forgetting that they are students, and
have personal likes that can be useful to motivate them and also to make the learning
process easy and entertaining for them and for the teacher.
The specific factors that we will rescue from the students are the visual interests,
involving movies, images, short-movies, etc. In order to teach the students how to analyze
images applying other skills like reading, writing, listening and speaking. Otherwise, in the
contextual issues we can cover specifics task related to places to visit out of Talcahuano, to
do activities related to trekking, hiking to name a few, to take them away from the reality they
have been always immersed.
