light-bodied category.
Full-bodied wines sit on the opposite end of the wine body
spectrum, exhibiting noticeable weight on the tongue, bathing your
palate with unmistakeable volume. As you would expect, full-bodied
wines, red or white, tend to have deeper color and higher alcohol
content, including viscous, golden-hued Chardonnays with alcohol
around 13.5% or more. Medium-body wines, in red or white, will
have a mouthfeel that falls between light- and full-bodied. Examples
are Pinot Noir for red, Sauvignon Blanc for a white wine.
As it happens, the vast majority of red and white wines can be
described as medium bodiednot exactly lightweight and crisp but
far from lush and heavy, either. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot may
fall into either the full- or medium-body category, depending on
where the grapes were grown and the manipulation of the wine by
the winemaker.

In the Redwood Plaza
next to Vallergas Market
and Spring will mean time to transfer, or rack, again as every few
months barrels need to be topped up to reduce the oxygen of
headspace created by the angels share, and the best way to
address this is to conslidate into fewer barrels. This causes a
gradual reduction of the overall wine in the cellar as barreled
wines are racked out of their homes and then into either a new
barrel or a tank, some folks deciding to maintain the integrity of
each wine lot while others allowing for a general mixing in a larger
tank before going back to individual barrels again.
Any given red spends 18 to 24 months in this cyclethough
some idiosyncratic producers may keep wine in barrel up to four
yearsand along the way, each racking creates a natural fining
effect as particles fall out of solution and end up in the belly of
each barrel. These lees provide for complexity but also possible
microbial contamination, which is why the monitoring of each
wine in barrel and as it is racked is most important of allwe can
taste and smell problems far quicker through sensory monitoring.
Regardless of which decisions are made, or not, each time the
winegrower chooses to tweak or not, to rack or not, how often,
the logistics of the racking, etc., all leave an impact on the final
wine. While the processes are scientific, measurable, and
generally predictable, the application is where experience and
creativity come to the fore. There is no one right answer, which is
what makes winegrowing so much fun. If we knew all the
answers ahead of time, thered be no point in doing it since wines
tend to have minds of their own. Consider that when you pop
the next bottle and enjoy!
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a dozen years, and, in addition
to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which produces a nationally and
internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and donates a percentage of its sales, he
regularly consults for wineries and organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via
their subsidiaries, Discrete Wine Support Services and Napa Valley Writing Services.

Whats in a Name?
Randy and Lisa came to wine through their travels
in Italy, where the fruit of the vine is typically a
complement to a mealnot the centerpiece. When
their growing passion for fine food and wine led
them to plant acreage in Napa Valley, Randy and
Lisa decided to create a red wine that would easily
find a place at the dinner table. Maximus, named
after the wine loving, 2nd century Roman Emperor
Magnus Maximus, became their initial bottling.
Tucked into the Northern corner of the Napa Valley, the Bennett Lane Winery is located
where the valley floor meets the edge of the Mayacamas Mountains and offers views of the
rugged Palisade mountains and Mount St. Helena. Visiting the charming tasting room is a
refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the Valley floor and has the friendliest staff
in the Napa Valley.
This relaxed setting is the perfect way to spend a leisurely wine country afternoon.
The tasting room offers two flights daily, the Signature Flight which includes four wines at
$20 per person, or for Cabernet lovers, a Reserve Flight which offers three Reserve
Cabernet Sauvignons at $45 per person.

Andretti Winery
Celebrating 20 years as a Napa Valley landmark!
Racecar legend Mario Andretti and Joe Antonini met over 30 years
ago and became good friends over their love for wine and Italian
heritage. Mario and Joe founded Andretti Winery in 1996 to bring

Valley. This year, these good friends celebrate the 20th anniversary of
Andretti Winery with club members, special guests and family. The
anniversary festivities are a buzz at the winery as the team is pouring
a special 20th anniversary wine tasting flight of limited release wines
open to the public. Club members and special guests enjoyed a
beautiful dinner party outside of the Tuscan villa on Saturday, July
23rd followed by a brunch with live music on July 24th.
Club members and visitors from throughout the nation have made
Andretti Winery a regular destination when visiting the Napa Valley.
The beautiful backdrop, relaxing atmosphere and award winning

Classic Collection, which includes: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot,
Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Napa Cellars also has a tier called the V Collection, these are limited production, subappellation wines from the Napa Valley. The name V Collection represents the first five
vineyards Napa Cellars was founded on. The wines include Napa Cellars St. Helena
Cabernet Sauvignon, Carneros Pinot Noir and Carneros Chardonnay.
They also have the Winemaker Series which includes a Napa Cellars Dyer Vineyard
Syrah Ros, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Meritage, Petite Sirah and Dyer Vineyard Syrah. Most
famous is their delicious Classic Chardonnay and is a must try when you come to spend
the day!
A Little History
Napa Cellars was founded in 1968, crafting wines that are widely recognized as the
classic Napa Valley style: ripe, rich and balanced. Self-made man Charlie R. Woods
founded the winery on five and a half acres of prime Oakville soil. In the 1970s, he built a
geodesic dome to store barreled wine, and concentrated on making reds, in particular
Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1996, the winery changed hands a few times before
being purchased by Koerner Rombauer and Rich Frank, when they earned their reputation
for crafting rich, buttery Chardonnaya style that was becoming popular in the United
States at the time. By 2007, Joe Shirley became the winemaker and has continued to build
an impressive portfolio based on a stunning line-up of wines.

Beringer Vineyards
Iconic Winery Celebrates 140th Anniversary
To really understand the passion and amazing history of the Napa Valley, wine and
history lovers should include a visit to Beringer Vineyards.
Jacob Beringer and his older brother Frederick founded the winery in St. Helena,
California (Napa County) in 1876. At the time of Jacobs death in 1915, the Beringer
name had become one of the most recognizable wine brands in the United States.
Beringer Brothers wines earned medals of distinction in international competitions in San
Francisco (1887), Dublin (1892), Paris (1889, 1900) and Chicago (1893).
Pioneers of Innovation
O
Frederick & Jacob Beringer
In addition to the successful operation of his own business, Jacob was instrumental in
the formative years of the Napa County wine trade because of his employment of new
technologies in the field and cellar. These new winemaking methods would be adopted by
other wineries and change the face of the industry. Beringer was the first winery to
experiment with gravity-flow fermentation techniques and dug the first naturally
temperature controlled caves by hand in the 1880s. Jacob also utilized his GermanAmerican connections in educating consumers about the regions wines in important
markets such as New York City, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and St. Louis.
Beringer Vineyards jump-started its 140th Anniversary April 24 celebration with the 1st
Annual Founders Day event at the winery in St. Helena. As the Napa Valleys oldest
continuously operating winery, Beringer decided to commemorate the event with an
annual Founders Day, which featured special wine tastings, seminars, cave tours, and live
music.
Returning to his familys winery last year, Mark Beringer has taken the reins as
winemaker at Beringer Vineyards, and fittingly, he was on hand (along with his mother

Nightingale
Nightingale is a special Sauterne-style dessert wine
developed by Myron Nightingale, Winemaker from 1971
1985, and his wife Alice. Three decades were spent in
developing their method for making a wine in the style of
the classic French Sauternes. This lovely dessert wine
features intense fruit, and is a beautiful demonstration of
how science and art can come together in winemaking.

Calistoga Wine Growers Present the Calistoga Wine Experience
Combining all the best features of Calistoga
premier wine, culinary offerings and a spectacular harvest setting
its the Calistoga Wine Experience.
On Saturday, September 10 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., guests will
meet owners and winemakers, enjoy Tuscan appetizers provided by
Calistoga Kitchen Chef Rick Warkel and the sounds of Live GypsyJazz music, performed in the gazebo by award-winning Hot Club of
San Francisco. The event takes place in Pioneer Park, 1308 Cedar
Street in Calistoga, 1/2 block from downtown Calistoga.
This is an ideal event for consumers to discover all the unique
characteristics in Calistogas high quality wines, said Tom Eddy,
owner of Tom Eddy Winery and President of the Wine Growers. We
hope this debut experience will become an annual event
complementing the very popular Calistoga Harvest Table Weekend
every September.
Participating Calistoga wineries will include: 2880 Wines, Amici
Cellars, Barlow Vineyards, Bennett Lane Winery, Bragg Vineyards,
Canard Vineyard, Chateau de Vie, Chateau Montelena, Clos Pegase,
Fairwinds, Harris Estate Vineyards, Hindsight Wines, Homage
Vineyard, Huge Bear, Jack Brooks Vineyard, Jax Vineyards, Jericho
Canyon Vineyard, Jones Family Vineyards, Kenefick Ranch
Vineyards, Knighton Family Vineyards, La Sirena, Laura Michael
Wines, Olabisi, Phifer Pavitt Wine, Samuel Brannan Vineyards,
Storybook Mountain Vineyards, Summers Estate Winery, Tamber Bey,
Tom Eddy Winery, T-Vine, Vermeil Wines, Voros Cellars and Ziata
Wines.

Ibletos @ Balletto Laguna Royal Italian Festa Dinner, August 19
The Brothers Ibleto, Art and Angelo, bigger-than-lifecharacters known for their familys heritage recipes and Italian
cooking skills are teaming with vintners John and Terri Balletto
to offer a night of great food, fine wine, Italian music and lots of
fun. The royal Italian feast will be for 100 lucky people on
August 19 at Balletto Vineyards and Winery along the Laguna in
the Russian River Valley.
Art, the Pasta King, will prepare his signature pasta and
polenta dishes. Angelo, a sausage master and celebrated grill
king, will smoke a whole hog for the al fresco Italian feast.
Italian Gelato inspired flavors of Cold Stone Ice Cream will be
served for dessert.
Dont miss out on this night of fun with three of Sonoma
Countys most beloved Italians who live by the adage, Eat,
drink and be merry.
Join the party for $150 per person or $250 a couple. For
tickets or more information, visit sonomafb.org. Buon Gusto!

This summer, Woodfour signed a lease to expand into the bookstore space
next door. This, according to Director Nelson Rudolph, will triple the
brewerys barrel storage space, enabling the brewery to double its sour beer
production. This growth will come in handy, as the brewery is starting to
distribute its beer to Washington state and along the I-80 corridor into
Sacramento and Tahoe, Rudolph added.
When we first opened, people came for the restaurant, and now people
come for the beer, said Rudolph.
He added that craft beer is a growing market, and even in wine country,
people come in from a long day of wine tasting and all they want is a cold
beer.
People want that elevated experience, and we attract that, he said.

Woodfours brewmaster,
Seth Wood, has extensive
training in winemaking,
and approaches craft beer
with the same
experimental and scientific
methodology. Taking a
page from the winery
playbook, Woodfour is
creating a Beer Club to
strengthen relationships
with customers and
introduce beer lovers to
new brews. The club will
launch this fall, and it will
be open to 50 members at first. Club members will come to the
brewery to pick up their beer. There, they can drink, schmooze,
eat and fill their growlers from whats on tap.

Becoming Independent
In 1967, parents organized Sonoma Countys first communitybased program for adults with developmental disabilities, called the
Manual Skills Training Center. Two years later, the State Legislature
affirmed that people with disabilities had the same rights as other
people and declared the responsibility of government to ensure that
those rights are achieved, through the Lanterman Act. Over the next
decade additional support programs were established in Sonoma
County to provide adult activities, independent living support
services and to advocate for people with disabilities. In January 1980,
this group of programs incorporated as a 501c(3) tax exempt charity
