Kapauns Men: Will resume meeting in the fall
All people who are in heaven, not just those officially canonized by the Church, are
regarded as saints. However, it is rare to encounter a married couple, both of whom are
canonized saints. No doubt, there are more married people who have achieved sainthood
but never canonized. Why there are not more married saints can be answered because
many holy married couples didnt have anyone to promote their canonizations or to
spread the word about their good works.
In his book, On Advantages of Matrimony, St. Augustine said there have been married
women who surpassed virgins in holiness. He mentioned that many canonized spouses
were married to saints. Youve no doubt heard about such husband-wife saints as St. Anne
and St. Joachim, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and St. Elizabeth and St.
Zachary, the parents of St. John the Baptist. Of course, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin
Mary were united in marriage as well. But did ever hear of St. Julian and St. Basilissa, St.
Henry II and St. Cunegund, or St. Elzear and St. Delphina? All were married saints.
Joachim, husband of Anne and Father of Mary, belonged to the Tribe of Judah and the
House of David. Blessed with earthly goods, they left Galilee, in the extreme northern
part of what is now Israel, to make their home in Nazareth, a town farther south. For
years, they remained childless, which was a bitter misfortune for Jewish parents. They
prayed hard for a child. In fact, Joachim spent 40 days and nights in the desert, praying.
An angel appeared to him and said that Anne would become a Mother. The angel also
visited Anne. Late in life, Anne gave birth to a girl who was destined to become the
Mother of God. Not content with the general offering which Jewish parents made of
their children in infancy, they presented Mary at an early age to the priests in the temple
to be reared there and taught the things needed in order to render useful service to the
clergy. Mary grew in grace until the day when the Son of God took flesh in her, but there
is no record that her parents lived to see that day.
Anne and Joachim are not mentioned in the New Testament, but they are referred to in
the apocryphal (not verified) Gospel of St. James, written about 160 A.D., which told of
how St. Joachim was visited by the angel. St. Anne was venerated (deep reverence) in
Eastern Europe as early as the 5th Century and a church was built on the site of the home
of Joachim and Anne near Jerusalem, where they were buried. The Crusades spread her
veneration to the West and in 1382, her feast was extended to the entire Latin Church.
Many miracles have been attributed to her direct intercession. St. Anne is known as the
patroness of housewives and women in labor. They would seem to have been the luckiest
parents in the world for having Our Blessed Mother as their daughter!
