PROPOSAL OF ACTION PLAN

WORKSHOP ON
ENHANCING PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENT’S
UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC MATHEMATICAL
CONCEPTS USING TEACHING AID

A. Rationale
The 2007 Singapore Primary Mathematics Syllabus said that Mathematics is
an excellent vehicle for the development and improvement of a person’s intellectual
competence in logical reasoning, spatial visualization, analysis and abstract thought.
Students develop numeracy, reasoning, thinking skills, and problem solving skills
through the learning and application of mathematics. Mathematics is also a subject of
enjoyment and excitement, which offers students opportunities for creative work and
moments of enlightenment and joy. When ideas are discovered and insights gained,
students are spurred to pursue mathematics beyond the classroom walls. To develop
all those competencies students need a certain medium or mathematics teaching aid in
mathematics learning. Mathematics is an abstract object but with using of

3
mathematics teaching aid, abstract concepts in mathematics can be learnt by means of
the concrete teaching aid. Teaching aid in mathematics education will bridge
mathematics concept that is abstract, in order to be understood by the students.
Hence, teaching aid important for mathematics education.
Development and improvement of a student’s intellectual competence in
logical reasoning, spatial visualization, analysis and abstract thought need an
understanding of the basic mathematical concept. Mathematical concepts cover
numerical, algebraic, geometrical, statistical, probabilistic, and analytical concepts.
Students should develop and explore the mathematics ideas in depth, and see that
mathematics is an integrated whole, not merely isolated piece of knowledge. They
should be given a variety of learning experiences to help them develop a deep
understanding of mathematical concepts in order to participate actively in learning
mathematics and to become more confident in exploring and applying mathematics.
The use of manipulative (concrete materials), practical work, and use of teaching aids
should be part of the learning experiences of the students.
The main function of manipulatives (teaching aid) in mathematics education
is to bridge mathematics concept that is abstract in order to make the student is able
to understand the meaning of the concept. Teaching aid in mathematics education can
be used to:
1. make concept to be understood easier;
2. strengthen acquired concept;
3. motivate student; and
4. be a source of learning.
Teacher should be able to create teaching aid, especially from simple
materials. Therefore, this workshop provides teacher with topics cover what teacher
needs to know on mathematics teaching aid. Through this workshop teacher will learn
about simple primary mathematics teaching aid to enhance students understanding of
the basic mathematical concepts. Teacher also will make lesson plan to teach
mathematics in primary school with teaching aid have produced.

4
B. Objectives
1. To produce mathematics teaching aid using simple materials/inexpensive
available materials.
2. To learn how to teach primary school mathematics with simple teaching aids
have produced to enhancing students understanding of the basic mathematical
concept.

C. Expected Outcomes
At the end of the workshop participants should be able to:
1. understand primary mathematics curriculum
2. make a lesson plan using teaching aid to enhancing student’s understanding
of the basic mathematical concepts,
3. design and produce mathematics teaching aid from simple materials,
D. Course Content /Topics
1. Strategies/approaches to enhancing Primary School Student’s Understanding of
Basic Mathematical Concepts
2. Identifying topics in mathematics curriculum that use teaching aid;
