Howdoesitwork?The2Dmeshandthe1Dsystemaretightlycoupledduringanunsteady
simulation.ThismeansthatwatersurfaceelevationiscalculatedateachXSandeachgridcellfor
everytimestep,allowingdirectfeedbackattheconnections.2Dflowareascanbelinkedtothe1D
systemthesamewaystorageareasare.TheFigureshownbelowisaschematicofhowthe2D
meshisbuilt,andhowRASroutesflowfromcelltocell.

Uponcreatingthe2D
mesh,youneedtoloadadigitalterrainfile(.fltformat).Boththepreandpostprocessingstepsfor
the2DflowareaaredonethroughRASMapper.
RASpreprocessesthe2Dmeshseparatelyfromthe1Dsystem.Duringthisprocess
RAScreatesanelevationstoragecurveforeachcell,andcalculateshydraulic
propertiesforeachcellface.Thesehydraulicpropertiesaresimilartothecrosssection
hydraulicproperties(HTABcurves).
TheCellCenteriswherewatersurfaceelevationiscomputedforthewholecell.
CellFacescontrolflowbetweencellsbyactingasadetailedXS.Station/elevationdata
iscaptureddirectlyfromtheunderlyingterrainfile.
CellFacePointsareusedforstationingtoconnecttoalateralstructure.Theyalso
representtheendsofcellfaces.
Manningsnvaluesforeachcellwillbeassignedbyaspatiallyvariedpolygonor
manuallyentered.
Computationally,RASwillallowtheusertochoosebetweenusing2DDiffusionWaveequations
(default),orthefull2DDynamicWaveequations.Mostfloodapplicationsshouldbeadequately
modeledusingtheDiffusionWaveequations.Whataretheadvantages?Besidescomputingin2
dimensions,themainadvantageistheprogramsabilitytomaintaincomputationalrobustnesswhile
preservingthedetailsoftheunderlyingterrain.Smallerfeatures(i.e.drainageditches)thatrun
throughlargecellswillbecapturedinthehydraulicpropertiesofthecellfaces.Therefore,these
featureswillbepreservedandaccountedforbothcomputationallyandvisually,eventhoughtheyare
smallerthanthegridcellsize,asdemonstratedintheRAS2Doutputdisplayedinthefigurebelow.
Traditionally,many2Dmodelsrequirecellsizetobeconsistentwiththesizeofthefeaturestobe
included.NotthecasewithRAS2D.

Additional
advantagesinclude:
Cellscanbeanysizeandshape.Thisallowstheusertomodeloddshapedfeatures
withinthe2Dflowareaaswellasprovidemorecomputationaldetailaroundareasof
interest.
Fastercomputationtimes.RASusesanimplicitschemetocalculatewatersurfaceand
flowateachXSandcellsimultaneously.Theimplicitschemeisalsomorestable,which
allowsforlargercellsizes.

For2dimensionalflowareas,RASusesanimplicitfinitevolumesolutionofthe2d
Diffusive Wave form of the St. Venant equations by default, with the option to run
thefulldynamicformifsodesired.HECfeelsthatformostapplications,thediffusive
waveformwillbeadequate.

scenarios.Ihadbuiltanetworkwithfullsquaremeshconnectedbyoverflow.AsIamFrench,

RAS2D will handle culverts the same way it has in the past, to my knowledge. I'm
notsurewhatyoumeanbyculvertsystems,butyoucanhaveculvertsinstreams,in
lateral structures, and in storage area connections. Those methods for modeling
culvertsshouldallstillbeavailabletoyouinRAS2D.

Yes,whenversion5.0comesouttowardstheendofthismonth,you'llbeabletodo
a 2D analysis of flow in a river. I think (though I'm not sure) you'll still need some
crosssections.Youcanalwayssetup"dummy"crosssectionstofulfillthisneed.

more resolution around areas of interest. I'm not sure what the cell size/number
limitationswillbein5.0,butI'msureyouwon'thaveaproblemformostapplications.
