PURPOSE:
The purpose of this procedure is to standardize the procedure for testing of Passive rock
anchors at specific area in the construction of Natural Draft Cooling Towers at RAPP
7&8 work.

SCOPE OF WORK:
The anchors shall be installed as per the approved construction drg, according to
the procedure (Contractor).
Following two types of anchors are to be tested:-

Four test anchors are to be tested up to failure to check the suitability of anchor length
and grouting mix.
1 % of working rock anchors are to be tested up to 0.9 times of characteristic strength of
Fe 500 steel bar.

RESPONSIBILITY:
The responsibility of implementation of this procedure is with the Section in Charge I
Site Engineer of contractor and QA Engineer of contractor.

EQUIPMENTS
The Following equipment shall be used:
A. Fabricated Reaction beam of sufficient capacity as per approved details and drawings for
loading by jacking method.
B. 2 numbers of calibrated and certified hydraulic jack of 100 mt capacity (approved make)
C. Pumping unit
D. Calibrated and certified pressure gauges 4 dia, 600 kg/sqcm capacity

travel of 50mm.
Packing shims and packing plates of varying sizes and thicknesses as per requirement
Wooden sleeper mats
Mobile crane or Hydra of 20MT capacity for handling
Sufficient lighting arrangement
Safety arrangement as per norms laid down by contract

PRECAUTIONARY REQUIRMENTS:
The test shall be performed only after proper setting of utilized grout up to compressive
strength of 25 MPa
Testing head and surface around selected rock anchor shall be neatly leveled and made
firm enough to avoid deviations in line of action of applied jacking force.
Use of steel plates is highly recommended for even and uniform distribution of
forces/loads during testing process.
Latest updated Calibration certificates shall be available for all types of pressures,
distance and deflection measuring devices.
The positioning of anchor bar shall be maintained & ensured, precisely concentric with
jack position.
In case of pressure drops observed during loading after waiting period of 15 minutes, a
previous pressure reading shall be re-adjusted with another schedule of waiting period of
15 minutes.

METHODOLOGY OF TEST PROCEDURE:

a. Based on contract & applicable test requirements a random sampling of completed rock
anchors shall be finalized.
b. At selected test anchor locations, test data shall be verified for its cube strength at
specified strength of grout mixture to proceed with further testing.

c. Surface around test anchor shall be cleaned, levelled & rammed properly to have a firm
surface.
d. In case if level difference between ground level and test anchor head is more, a wooden
sleeper mat along with steel plates can be arranged with precise levels.
e. Place the fabricated reaction beam with proper fixtures over anchor head. A proper
gripping arrangement between beam and test anchor head, preferably by threading, shall
be ensured and confirmed to avoid slippages during load applications.
f. Arrange 2 numbers of calibrated dial gauges, diagonally opposite to each other below
reaction beam with proper fixity at base. A magnetic block support can be used to hold
dial gauge I firm position.
g. Connect Hydraulic pump with calibrated gauges ensuring no leakages in connecting
pipes.
h. After confirming completeness of entire arrangement, apply initial load gradually to
avoid jerks especially.
i. Working load of 66MT and ultimate load of 104MT shall be applied gradually with
phased increment of 5MT every time.
j. Check and record elongations in terms of deflection of reaction beam under applied load
as per standard recording formats.
k. While application of load in phases, there shall be a waiting period of 10 minutes to
observe sudden droppings in pressure, if any.
l. Test anchor shall be tested till its failure (104MT) , while field anchors shall be tested up
to specified working loads(66MT)
m. Interpret the data to calculate the load by measuring pressure reading and given ram area
of hydraulic jack.

OBSERVATIONS:
a. Test reports shall be generated based on in process observations and readings of dial
gauges
b. The observations and readings shall be analyzed for[Type text]

Failure of parent material of anchor
Failure between anchor and grout
Failure between grout and adjoining rock surface
c. Graphical presentation shall be submitted in terms of plot of Load versus Elongation
ACCEPTANCE CRITERA:
1. For test anchors the test shall be up to failure and should not fail with respect to bond
between;
a. Anchor rod and grout
b. Adjoining rock face and grout
2. For working anchors the test shall be up to working load and 5% of filed anchors shall be
tested randomly and are deemed to be qualitative if:
a. The anchor sustains test loads of 66MT without having a pressure drop, when
sustained for waiting period of 15 minutes.
