June 2016 - May 2017

Foreword
Eindhoven is one of the most international cities in the
Netherlands. And what weve known for years has now finally become apparent to the rest of the world. Eindhoven
is no longer a Dutch backwater, but rather one of the most
inventive cities in Europe. All the factory complexes that
were abandoned by electronics giant Philips were seen as
eyesores until they were finally repurposed by this once
sleepy town of roughly 220,000 inhabitants. Most of these
buildings have recently been transformed into vibrant cultural and entrepreneurial centres not to mention pop-up
restaurants and offices for graduates of Eindhovens Design
Academy. These creative spaces are scattered across the
city, so youre never far away from an example of the citys
new-found dynamism. Youll also discover a city thats full
of inviting culinary institutions not to mention incredible
nightlife from cheap student bars to trendy cocktail lounges and clubs. Read this very first edition of Eindhoven In Your
Pocket and explore the city as if you were a local.

the citys iconic Philips Museum,
a great place to spend time for
technology buffs of all ages.
Although the cynical among
us could view this museum located in the original Philips factory from 1891 as pure company
propaganda, we have to admit
that this modern space gives an
interesting overview of this multinational giant, which
has played such a crucial role in Eindhovens history.

Arriving & Getting Around

Eindhoven has its own airport and a central train station,
so its really quite simple to get to the city.

This is Eindhoven Brandstore

This centrally located information centre is a good
place to get brochures, guides or personal advice from
a staff member. They can recommend excursions, help
you purchase concert tickets and offer lots of other
practical services. Staff can also help with Eindhovens
public transport system and some souvenirs are also
available, like a free copy of this guide.QB1, Station

FlixBus
FlixBus is a German low cost bus operator with over
30,000 daily connections in Europe including some Dutch
cities. From Eindhoven you can travel to 11 different cities (Apeldoorn, Enschede, Hengelo and Groningen in the
Netherlands; Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, and Munich in Germany; and Antwerp and Brussels in Belgium).
Although the company claims to provide free wi-fi and
electrical sockets aboard every bus, this was not the case
when we went to press in early 2016.QStationsweg 1,

BY Plane
Eindhoven Airport
Despite its modern appearance and grand plans, Eindhoven Airport is still quite small so its impossible to get
lost, although on a yearly base almost 4 million passengers use this terminal. Currently more than 70 cities, available from eight different airlines, can be visited. There
are a handful of shops for bulbs, books and groceries
(Albert Heijn) as well as a Starbucks and two branches of
Farm Coffee. Short-term parking is available only steps
away from the entrance and larger garages can be found
nearby for longer stays. With the longest landing strip in
the Netherlands, its easy to understand why this airport
is still growing. Unfortunately their is no train station (yet),
although plans are made to build one before 2028.
Getting to town: You can take local bus Nr. 400 (20 minutes/2.16, first bus at 06:07, last one at 19:37, busses leave
every 15 minutes) or 401 (20 minutes/2.16, first bus at
05:38, last one at 22:39, busses leave every 15 minutes) to
the Eindhoven train station and then continue on to destinations near and far. The Airexpress bus is another option.
Buses depart for Utrecht (30 return/17 single; transferium
Westraven) and Amsterdam (40 return/24 single; Prins
Hendrikkade) 60 times each week up to nine times per day.
The bus stop is right in front of the terminal. For more information visit www.airexpressbus.com or call tel. (+31) 402 55

By train
Eindhovens Central Station isnt exactly one of the citys
most striking buildings, but more than 100,000 passengers
use this major transport hub each day. If you look closely
you see that the building resembles a radio, thus referring
to the fact that electronics giant Philips was for a long time
dominating life in Eindhoven. Its currently undergoing major renovations that should be finished in 2016. Youll arrive
at one of eight platforms and then simply walk downstairs
into the central hallway, which leads to the bus station and
the centre of town.
A GWK Travelex (www.gwktravelex.nl; open 08:00 20:00) currency exchange and an ATM are available in the
hallway. For toilets that cost 0.50 you have to go up to the
exit near the buses. Luggage storage lockers can be found
in the middle of the station near platforms 3 and 4, but you
can only pay with a credit card. A ticket good for 24 hours
will be printed. When you want to remove your luggage
just place the ticket into the slot and the door of your locker
will automatically open.
For tourist information we recommend you exit the
building on the city centre side and walk a bit to the right
where the official VVV tourist information centre (see Tourist information) is located.
Getting to town: You are in the very centre of town and all
of Eindhoven lays before you. Hotels are scattered throughout the city. If you plan on using public transport frequently
in Eindhoven it might be worth buying an extended ticket.

Eindhoven Basics

Graffiti at De Berenkuil

Read on and find out why the Dutch allow its citizens to
smoke joints, but not to operate a bicycle while intoxicated.
Plenty of other funny facts about Holland are available here.

Alcohol
Eindhoven has hundreds of cafs and restaurants so youre
never far from a glass of wine or a pint of beer. Heineken
and Bavaria are the two most popular beers on offer at
most places in the inner city. Other tasty brews include
Grolsch, Hertog Jan, Amstel and the Belgian Jupiler. Beer is
served everywhere, especially Belgian brews, but you must
be able to prove that youre at least 18 years old to drink
beer, wine or spirits. If you look too young youll be carded,
so always bring identification.

Cycling
Holland is one of the smaller countries in the world, but
since its flat as a pancake its attractive to cyclists. Add to
this an unbelievable amount of zigzagging cycling paths
and youll see why the Dutch love cycling so much no matter what the weather conditions are outsise. Although cycling in the bigger cities like Amsterdam can be a dangerous endeavour, this isnt the case in Eindhoven. Rent a bike
and discover the city on two wheels.

Drugs
It comes as no surprise that in many places in the Netherlands youre allowed to buy and smoke marijuana and
other soft drugs. And you may have also heard that dealing
or possessing hard drugs is forbidden. You can be arrested
for it and punishments are no laughing matter. Soft drugs
are sold exclusively at so-called coffeeshops so dont buy
them on the streets. These products have often been adulterated with unknown rubbish. Again, dealing is forbidden.
Use your head and limit yourself to the coffeeshops to get
high responsibly.

Emergency numbers
In case of an emergency, call 112. This number will connect
you to the emergency centre that will put you through to
the local police, ambulance or fire department.

Eindhoven Basics
Language
Dutch is an Indo-European Germanic language that is
mostly spoken in the Netherlands, Flanders and Suriname
(South America). It is closely connected to the Low German
dialects which by now have largely been flooded by official
German. Most Dutch have a more than healthy command
of the English language. Many will also be adept at other
European languages with German being the most common second language. Mastering the Dutch language can
be a terrifying ordeal, but learning a few key phrases will
make things easier.

Money
The Netherlands officially adopted the euro in 2002. One
euro contains 100 euro cents. There are coins of 1, 2, 5, 10,
20 and 50 euro cents, and also of 1 and 2 euro. Bank notes
are available with the following values: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100,
200, and 500. Although a collection of 200 and 500 bills
in your wallet might make you feel like Bill Gates, bear in
mind that theyre almost never accepted in shops or restaurants.

Phone numbers
All In Your Pocket guides in its European publishing empire
list country codes before all telephone numbers. The Dutch
country code is (+31), but of course, you only have to use
this if youre dialling from abroad. If youre already in the
Netherlands and want to call one of the numbers in this
guide, just ignore the (+31) prefix and dial the ten-digit
number.

Smoking
Since the introduction of the ban on smoking in public
places on 1 July 2008, smoking has become a lot less common. Today you can have a wild night out and come home
without your hair and your clothes reeking of cigarette
smoke. However, thanks to unclear rules you may suddenly
find yourself in a pub where people are allowed to smoke.
This is usually in pubs with a single staff member: the boss.
Or you may find yourself in a pub that flouts the ban on
smoking. This will not have any consequences for you. If
you light a cigarette in a pub and the manager tolerates
this, then the manager will receive a fine upon inspection.

Although Paris likes to call

itself the City of Light, only
one European city has the
honour of truly claiming
this title and that city is
Eindhoven. Long before
the French began bandying
about the phrase Le Ville
Lumire, Eindhoven had
already been associated
with the moniker. Although
most people think that the nickname is related to Philips and the invention of light bulbs in 1891, its actually
derived from the so-called Lucifer industry. Matches
can trace their origins as far back as 577 AD, but the
first factory in the Netherlands dedicated to the production of these flammable necessities only opened
in Eindhoven in 1870. Soon after the Dutch began calling it City of Light, or Lichtstad. Today Eindhoven is also
renowned for its light-themed event known as Glow
(see below).

Special events
Carnival (Lampegat)
A proud southern tradition, Carnival looks a bit like Halloween, but its steeped in history. Between Saturday and
Tuesday (in either February or March) most hotels, bars
and clubs have carnival parties where guests, most of
whom are in fancy dress, get into the spirit of turning the
world upside down or whatever that means. Try to catch
at least one parade or public street party and enjoy the
polonaise dance. During these crazy days, Eindhoven
ceases to exist and becomes Lampegat (Lamp City).
Dutch Design Week
Want to know what the smart solutions, inventive designs
and trends of tomorrow are? Visit the annual Dutch Design
Week (DDW) where all the trends o tomorrow can be witnessed today. This internationally renowned nine-day event
in October draws an average crowd of 250,000 people
who visit more than 400 events/exhibitions at almost 80
locations throughout Eindhoven. Most events are free, but
some require tickets. Dont miss the annual exhibition by
the graduates of Design Academy Eindhoven, where Hollands most talented and hottest new designers show off
their masterpieces.Qtel. (+31) 402 96 11 50, www.ddw.nl.
Extrema Outdoor (XO)
Around since 1992, Extrema Outdoor offers a broad spectrum of electronic music and impressive decorations combined with theatrical performances and other shows. July
9, 2016 will mark the 21st anniversary of the dance festival
at the Aquabest beach on the northern outskirts of Eindhoven. A few years ago crowd pleasers included an interactive dance floor and the so-called smallest disco in the

Glow
No other city in the Netherlands has closer ties with light
than Eindhoven. Ever since Philips invented the light bulb
in 1891, the city has grown to become the technological
metropolis for which its now so rightly famous. Since
2006, Eindhoven has been transformed during the month
of November when it hosts the Glow illumination art festival. More than 50 artists from around the globe entertain
and inspire crowds with light installations, animations,
sculptures and performances, most of which are projected on iconic buildings in and around the city centre.
Buildings, streets, warehouses, squares and alleys in the
public space are part of the four kilometre long art route.
Last year more than 650,000 visitors came to walk, so be
prepared to cue.Qwww.gloweindhoven.nl.

De Bergen

Photo of De Bergen by
Nick Bookelaar

One of Eindhovens best kept secrets is also one of the citys

oldest districts, a trendy neighbourhood known simply as
De Bergen. Although it only consists of four small streets
(Grote Berg, Kleine Berg, Bergstraat and Willemstraat) and
one cosy square (Wilhelminaplein), theres so much to see
and do here that youll be tempted to browse through
its quirky, yet fashionable shops and to linger in its inviting cafs for hours and hours. While World War II has sadly
left reminders of its destruction all over town, De Bergen
luckily escaped the carnage that raged across much of the
Netherlands.
Today its characteristic and picturesque buildings host
a wide range of establishments including bars, boutiques,

restaurants, galleries and other venues guaranteed to grab

your attention. Its unusually narrow streets are filled from
sunrise to sunset with a lively atmosphere, but we have to
admit that its nearly Mediterranean ambience is best experienced at night when musicians and boisterous revellers
replace the neighbourhoods shoppers. This tiny district is
also home to some of the prettiest gardens in the Old Town,
so if youre looking for a great place to have lunch or dinner
in a trendy setting, head down to De Bergen. And on a final
note, you may be curious as to why it was named De Bergen (The Mountains). This refers to its medieval past when
this part of town was built on sandy hills that used to be so
typical of the area.

Enjoying De Bergens wonderful ambience

Since Drinkers Pub is open every day of the week, you really dont have an excuse to drink bad beer. The latest addition to Eindhovens bar scene serves an astonishing 700

we lost count during one of our numerous tasting sessions
at this charming pub. While most of the prices fall within
the usual range for what the Dutch call special beers, the
Scottish-made Tactical Nuclear Penguin will set you back
a tidy sum. Numerous local and regional brews can also

Its hard to imagine the local coffee scene without this
impressive newcomer. Its hard-to-find location at the end
of a small alley isnt user-friendly, but the final reward is
well worth the effort. Inside an old sawmill youll find a

coffee. All the usual varieties from cappuccino to espresso

Incredible interior
at De Vooruitgang

With nearly 300 restaurants to choose from, Eindhoven has

no shortage of venues to enjoy a good meal. While dining
out in the Netherlands is generally expensive (some would
say overpriced), Eindhoven has thousands of students who
help keep local prices in check.

Asian
Umami by Han
Han Ji is a famous name in the Dutch restaurant scene
and youll find a handful of these restaurants throughout the Netherlands, but Umami by Jan is all about the
shared dining experience. Small fusion courses of Asian/
French origin are served in a modern and stylish setting,
which includes a small terrace up front. Unfortunately, this
small street is quite popular with motorists too, so you
shouldnt expect much peace or quiet outside. Inside we
recommend dishes like panko scallops, seabass sashimi
or Bangkok prawns, which are all cooked to perfection.
The management should, however, spend some more
time training its lacklustre staff and the toilets could use
some major improvement. The steep prices for water also
caught us unawares.QA3, Kleine Berg 57H, tel. (+31)

De Vooruitgang
What do mirrors from the Czech Republic, tiles from New
York and Barcelona, Persian carpets and old Dutch furniture have in common? They all blend together perfectly
to create one of Eindhovens best hangouts. De Vooruitgang is actually an old local institution which burned to
the ground a few years ago. Instead of creating an artificial
version of the past, the owners decided to make something completely new and the result is a tasteful combination of modern and industrial styles. In short, a visit to
this trendy bar/restaurant is always a feast for the senses,

Ribs Factory
If youre in the mood to murder a big chunk of meat,
the Eindhoven outlet of the Ribs Factory is a good
place to start. Vegetarians can stop reading right now.
Mouthwatering servings of tender ribs come slathered
in a number of different sauces including the juicy Jack
Daniels plate, which is an absolute classic. Cutlery is
just for show as the meat is so well-cooked that it basically falls of the bone while you watch it. Ribs Factory
also has burgers and big steaks, but the superb ribs are
the real stars of the show. The interior is a bit generic,
but the staff makes up for this shortcoming by serving
meals in high gear with a genuine smile. Keep an eye
out for daily specials, which are considerably cheaper
than the meals on the menu.QB3, Kerkstraat 14, tel.

Indian
Taj-Mahal
India is one of the largest countries in the world and is
blessed with an amazing variety of people and food. Unfortunately, this restaurant has much more to complain about
than its boring, predictable name. The standard menu
is woefully overpriced and even the simplest vegetarian

Indonesia
Although Indonesia is by far the largest Muslim country
in the world, the walls of the upper floors of this centrally

While Indonesian cuisine usually boasts a great variety of
spices and ingredients, this Indonesia has strayed far from

said, if youre looking for a cheap way to fill your stomach,

While the interior lacks originality, the genuine Thai cuisine is some of the best weve had in the Netherlands. Run
by a lovely Thai woman named Aum, the restaurant serves

Vegetarian
Ons Eten en Drinken
Although Ons Eten en Drinken isnt a purely vegetarian restaurant, weve still chosen to categorise it as such as there
are so few places in Eindhoven where you can enjoy such
a great variety of organic, meatless dishes. The pasta with
Roquefort cheese and truffles was especially tasty, but you
can be sure that whatever you order from the impressive
menu will be excellent. The interior isnt what one would
call stylish, but the splendid view of the citys main church
from the second floor certainly makes up for this shortcoming.QB3, Kerkstraat 16, tel. (+31) 402 93 89 17, www.ons.

DUtch caviar
Either you love it or you hate it, but be that as it may,
a single spoonful of caviar eaten as a garnish or as a
spread supplies an adult with his daily requirement of
vitamin B12. Besides being high in cholesterol and salt,
this worldwide delicacy is also extremely expensive
and this is mainly due to the fact that the salt-cured
fish eggs are produced by sturgeon. The best of the
best comes from the waters of Caspian and Black
seas, but over-fishing, smuggling and pollution have
considerably reduced the sturgeon population there.
But if Russian and Iranian caviar tins are above your
budget and the cheaper Scandinavian versions made
from mashed and smoked cod roe arent to your taste,
theres yet another option. Since 2015 Eindhoven has
tossed its hat into the arena of commercial caviar production. The local product, which is marketed as Anna
Royal Dutch Caviar, refers to the former Russian Grand
Duchess Anna Pavlovna, who was also Queen of the
Netherlands from 1840 - 1849. For only 10 you can
purchase the cheapest 10g package, but the 100g
gold-quality tin will set you back 200. Over 10,000
fish are carefully raised for their precious eggs in Eindhoven.

Cafs

The Dutch share a love of espresso and cappuccino with

the Italians. Cafs in Eindhoven quite often offer much
more than just a cup of coffee with pastry or a cup of tea.
Most of them have soups, salads and sandwiches on their
menus, so the border between restaurants, pubs and cafs
is very thin. But have a look over our carefully selected cafs
and pick the one that is just right for your mood or occasion, Eet smakelijk!

glow in the dark

Always wanted to cycle through a Vincent van Gogh
painting? Head down to Nuenen, a small town on the
northeastern fringe of Eindhoven where the famous
Dutch artist lived and created his first masterpiece:
The Potato Eaters. Recently, the worlds first glow-inthe-dark cycling path was unveiled here that connects
the Wolvenpad with Loostraat. This route was chosen
because it joins two other famous landmarks painted
by Van Gogh in his early years, namely the Collse and
Opwettense watermills. The illuminated bike path itself is based on yet another renowned painting, Starry
Night. A 600m stretch has been equipped with a special coating that recharges itself during the day (even
when the sun doesnt shine) and shines at night. Its
like cycling through a living fairytale. In a country of
five million cyclists and hundreds of thousands of kilometers of bike paths, this could be a new way to forgo
traditional lightning methods to save energy. This innovative, self-sufficient path has already drawn attention from abroad in the UK and Quatar where smart
highways will gain similar illumination.

Public laboratory
Eindhoven has been a fertile breeding ground for
many innovations in the
fields of technology, design
and general knowledge for
the past two centuries. Pioneering work seems to be
synonymous with the way
people think in this thriving city. One of the latest
controversial social experiments is being closely watched by Dutch law enforcement, as it could potentially solve a wide range of
problems associated with urban youth in the Netherlands. During weekends - and other party nights - the
area around Stratumseind is packed with youngsters
dripping with adrenaline, which often leads to fights
and police intervention. A new, revolutionary strategy,
however, could possibly stop these drunken kids from
showing off their virility in public. Since early 2015 a
certain orange fragrance has been sprayed across the
length of this infamous party street, which is meant to
soothe and calm passersby. Tests with colours, lights
and sounds are also in the works and the police have
already claimed to have positive effects when the fragrance is sprayed on violent inmates in holding cells.

Nightlife
Cafe Wilhelmina
Every day of the week seems like a good day to enjoy good
live music at this centrally located bar. Come here for blues,
country, folk, rock or jazz performed on its small stage.
Cafe Wilhelmina was probably entertaining Neanderthals
during the last Ice Age, which is why the outdated interior
could use some work, but none of the regulars seem to
mind. Its all about the music here. Although this definitely
isnt the place to find bearded hipsters in their prime, its
interesting to watch local fossils go wild to good old rock
music. Highly recommended.QA2, Wilhelminaplein 6,

Cafe t Lempke
One of the nicknames attributed to Eindhoven residents
and PSV football fans in particular is (in the local dialect)
lempkes, meaning light bulbs. In 2006 this downtown student bar opened proudly wearing this moniker as a badge
of honour. Since then many couples have kissed here for the
first time, got drunk here for the first time and and many
other firsts in this pleasant local watering hole. If you dont
have the money to visit a PSV home game you can at least
experience some of the vibrant atmosphere during a televised match here in the pub.QB3, Stratumseind 14, tel.

Traditional bars
Cafe De Valk
Although Eindhoven is a modern city with heaps of hip
design restaurants and nightlife options, luckily the city still
has its fair share of traditional bars. Cafe De Valk is the flagship of these old brown bars boasting an interior that hasnt
changed since World War II and thats exactly what the regulars who see this is as their home-away-from-home appreciate. This is simply a place to drink a bottle of Jupiler while
playing some cards with your best mates. Smoking is still
allowed and it can get pretty rowdy here during and after
home games of local football giants PSV Eindhoven.QE6,

Sightseeing

Most of the citys best sights are concentrated in the relatively small area that makes up the old town, which means
that a full day and a good pair of walking shoes is all you
need to cover most of the main attractions. However, with
dozens of inviting cafs, a couple of lush parks and loads of
photogenic, historic buildings, you could spend the better
part of a week exploring this intriguing city.

Churches
Augustinian Church (Augustijnenkerk)
St. Augustines Church has been a prominent feature
of the Eindhoven skyline since the end of the 19th
century. Built in neo-Gothic style in 1895, this historic house of worship goes by three different names:
Augustijnenkerk, Heilig-Hartkerk and Paterskerk. The
66m-high church is still owned by its original founders, the monks of the nearby Marinhage monastery
and its most famous for the remarkable statue of the
Holy Heart of Christ, not to mention its impressive
stained glass. The church is home to a vibrant congregation and although mass is held in Dutch nearly every day, its also open to the public.QC2, Tramstraat

St. Catharines Church (Sint-Catharinakerk)

If youve seen the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station
in Amsterdam, then you might also recognise the genius
of architect Pierre Cuypers when taking in the striking
Sint-Catharinakerk in Eindhoven, complete with turrets
and gargoyles. Of the roughly 70 churches that Cuypers
designed, this is definitely one of his most renowned. In
1867 it replaced another church which in turn replaced the
original structure from 1420 that was destroyed by a fire.
Its two towers, named Maria and David, soar to a height
of 73m each. In 1974 the city of Eindhoven claimed ownership of the church to ensure that this National Cultural
Monument is preserved for future generations. A small
exhibit of old bones, skeletons, jewellery and household
items also details an archaeological dig that recently took
place here.QB3, Stratumseind 2. TJ

DAF Museum
Although industrial giants Philips recently left Eindhoven,
lorry-maker DAF (Van Doornes Aanhangwagenfabriek)
has been loyal to the city since 1928. Today it produces an
astonishing 200 vehicles a day at its nearby factory and its
highly entertaining museum has been fun for the whole
family since 1993. For over two decades this former beer
brewery has detailed the complete history of this Dutch
company. Hundreds of classic automobiles and lorries are
on display as well as futuristic prototypes that never made
it to production. You can also view some special cars that
were made for the Dutch royal family and the flashy vehicle that former First Lady Jacky Kennedy used to use to
do her shopping. Speed freaks will appreciate the F3 racing cars as well as the rally vehicles. The army of volunteers
who run the DAFMuseum consist mainly of retired assembly line workers who are still very proud of their company.

Philips Museum
Although the cynical among us could view this museum located in the original Philips factory from 1891
as pure company propaganda, we actually believe that
this modern museum gives an interesting overview of
this multinational giant that, until recently, played such
a crucial role in Eindhovens history. Follow the evolution
of the company from the creation of its first light bulb to
the invention of famous household appliances that we

innovative group game that details a century of Philips
inventions, or take an iPad tour that affords visitors insights into the harsh working conditions faced by factory employees in former days, but dont forget to take

Ton Smits Huis
Two years after his death, Dutch cartoonist and artist
Ton Smits was finally honoured with his own museum in
1983. Easily recognisable, as its probably the only bright
blue and pink villa in the entire Netherlands, the museum
is open only one day of the week, so youll have to plan
accordingly of you want to view his lifetime collection of
20,000 drawings and a few dozen paintings. Although his
paintings have won awards, he is more renowned for his
simple cartoons, which are much more accessible to the
general public. As early as World War II, Ton Smits was
already mocking Hollands Nazi occupiers, but after the
conflict had ended his talent was rewarded by leading national Dutch newspapers who published his cartoons. Later still he gained international recognition when he began
making impressive cartoons for The New Yorker. Although
he never fulfilled his dream of being a circus clown, Ton

Brainport Park (Brainportpark)
At the far north-western boundaries of Eindhoven lies
Brainport Park, which was once known as Landelijk Strijp
in a former life. Its actually a huge collection of fields,
forests, parks and industrial areas and the citys airport
is also considered a part of this vast property that is divided into smaller parcels by the A2 highway, a rail line
and the Beatrix Canal. Get yourself a proper map of the
terrain at the tourist information centre and cycle or stroll
through this immense green space, which is also home
to PSV Eindhovens picturesque training complex.QD6,

Genneper Park (Genneper Parken)

This multifunctional recreation area is home to an ice
skating rink (IJssportcentrum Eindhoven), a swimming
pool (De Tongelreep), a restaurant (Paviljoen Genneper
Parken) and lots of open green space. Roughly 3 million people visit the park each year, which is spread out
over an area of over 200ha. Its also home to two museums - the Eindhoven Museum and the Ton Smits Huis
cartoon museum.QE7/8, Antoon Coolenlaan 1, www.

Eindhoven-Woensel Cemetery (Oorlogsbegraafplaats Eindhoven-Woensel)

Due to the heavy fighting that took place in and around
Eindhoven in 1944, stark reminders of WWII can be found
throughout the area. Exactly 686 graves of the war dead
can be found in this cemetery, most of them Allied airmen
killed during strategic bombing campaigns. After years
of neglect the graveyard has finally been renovated and
once again is a worthy resting place for these fallen heroes. Among those who gave their lives are 570 British, 50
Canadian, 38 Australian, 9 New Zealand, 1 South African, 4
Dutch and 14 Polish soldiers.QE6, Baffinlaan.

Groendomein Wasven
Het Wasven is a tiny green oasis that is more of a picturesque garden than a park. For centuries this hidden gem
was also home to a castle dating from 1375, but sadly
in 1930 its owners had it demolished. The only visible
reminder of that bygone era is the stately row of beech
trees that once lead to the entrance. Today this 6ha area
is owned and operated by a group of local volunteers
and is now home to an organic bakery, an historic farm,
a restaurant and an ancient 4.5m-thick tree. Come here
during the summer on the last Sunday of the month for
intimate afternoon concerts or take the Made in Tongelre
bike route throughout the district, which passes by many
of the places where Vincent van Gogh used to paint. The

Philips van Lennep Park (Philips van
Lenneppark)
One of the citys newest parks was created in 1964 when
the Philips-Van Lennep family (hence the name) gave this
parcel of land to the municipality of Eindhoven. The rose
garden is one of its main attractions, while the open fields
are often occupied by sports enthusiasts and, on sunny
days, barbecue parties. A childrens petting zoo is also
available.QD6, Oude Vensedijk.
Stadswandel Park
One of Eindhovens most popular parks, Stadswandelpark,
was created in 1921. Its impressive pond and green fields
make it an ideal place for a picnic, but if youre after more
intellectual or artistic pursuits then visit the sculpture garden, the intriguing Radio Monument or the Observation
Tower. Then again, you can just relax on the banks of the
meandering River Dommel that traverses the park.QE7,

Places of interest
Berenkuil (Bear Pit)
People driving on Eindhovens boring ring road will probably never suspect that a completely different world lies
beneath the traffic circle at Insulindeplein. From the upper
level it looks like any other ordinary urban roundabout,
but a second sunken bicycle and pedestrian circle holds
a hidden secret. Since 2004, the Berenkuil (Bear Pit), as its
known by locals, has been designated a free zone for graffiti artists. Far from the prying eyes of the police, hundreds
of impressive modern murals have been created at the
crossroads of underpasses, ramps, pedestrian tunnels and
nearby streets.QF6, Insulindeplein.
Stratumseind
During the day Stratumseind, which is located between
the twin towers of St. Catharina Church and the River
Dommel, is one of Eindhovens dirtiest streets, but as soon
as the sun sets, party-goers arrive in droves and the street
truly comes alive. No other street in the Netherlands offers as many bars, club, pubs and snack bars (around 55)
in such a small stretch of road. See the nightlife chapter for

Sightseeing tours
Philips Stadion
A tour of the Philips Stadion is a must while in Eindhoven.
The third largest sports facility in the nation (after Ajaxs
pitch in Amsterdam and Feyenoords in Rotterdam) is
home to renowned football club PSV Eindhoven. More
than 35,000 fans fill the seats here twice a week during
the season to watch their local heroes and the stadium is
still at the same location where Philips Sport Vereniging
began way back in 1913. A guided tour is the best way to
see all of the nooks and crannies of the colossal building
and to hear interesting stories related to both the stadium
and the sports club. Thats how we know that English football legend David Beckham loved the stadium, but hated
the away dressing room. Admission to the PSV Museum,
which is full of club memorabilia and trophies, is included
in the combined ticket and is located inside the Philips

KIng of pop
Most of the statues within Eindhovens city limits are
dedicated to local heroes and people who have played
an important role in the citys history. On the outskirts
of city at Eindhovenseweg Zuid 59 in the town of Best
near the A2 highway youll find this 11m-tall polyester
statue of The King of Pop. Michael Jackson may have
left Planet Earth in 2009, but apparently hes still alive
in the hearts of his fans. The owners of the nearby McDonalds bought the statue directly from the record
company in 1995, who used the monstrous statue for
the release of Jacksons HIStory album. Worldwide,
there are only eight of these reproductions, but this
is the only one permanently located in a public space.
Although its worth a visit on any given day, if you drop
by on June 25, the day of his passing, youll see hundreds of fans including look-a-likes showing off their
best moonwalking skills. The Eindhoven location of
McDonalds also sports plenty of rock n roll memorabilia, including a life-size Marilyn Monroe doll.

SMartest Region
Being called the smartest region in the world is
a title that no one would
refuse. Especially when its
given to you several times
(beginning in 2009) by a
respectable institution like
the Intelligent Community
Forum (ICF). Since 2002 the
ICF international think tank
has studied the economic

century. Only a few dozen cities or metropolitan areas in the world have received this prestigious award.
Neighbouring Helmond and Veldhoven are also part
of the smartest region in the world.

Statues
Doors at Evoluon
It could be a prop from a James Bond movie. Do these
huge, solid bronze doors lead to a criminal organisations
lair? The reality is much less spectacular. The doors of Eindhovens iconic spaceship building were a gift to Philips
from its employees on its 75th birthday. They were designed in 1966 to symbolize the evolution of the human
race under the influence of modern technology. These
mighty doors, which are nearly 3m tall and 2.5m wide,
are covered in interesting scenes that include hunters
and farmers as well as Icarus unfortunate flight in Greek
mythology. These surreal figures are surrounded by mathematical formulas by Einstein and other geniuses who,
unlike us, could probably grasp the enigmatic meaning of
these unusual doors.QH10, Noord Brabantlaan 1a.
Frits Philips Statue
One of Eindhovens most popular native sons was Frederik
Jacques Philips (1905 - 2005)
who died at the tender age of
100. He is remembered abroad
as the fourth chairman of Dutch
electronics giant Philips, but the
Dutch remember him for his
efforts to save local Jews from
Nazi concentration camps. He
convinced the German occupiers that 382 Jewish employees were absolutely indispensable to his operations making him a kind of Dutch Oskar
Schindler. An empty seat is always reserved for him at the
Philips football stadium where PSV EIndhoven play and
since 1951 a life size statue of him has graced the citys
central square, the Markt. The city even minted a special
coin in his honour, which bears his nickname Fritske. A
concert hall, a restaurant and a glossy magazine are also
named after the industrialist.QB2, Markt.

Holy Heart Statue (Heilig Hartbeeld)

Dutch Catholics have revered the so-called Holy Heart of
Christ since the 13th century, but for some reason hundreds of years later in the late 1800s and early 1900s this
practice reached a fever pitch when countless statues of
the holy heart were erected all over the Netherlands.
Eindhoven was no exception and a few of these, including the one at the top of the picturesque Paterskerk dating
from 1898, sprouted up in the city. Locals have ironically
given the 5m-tall, 800kg statue the nickname daredevil
Jesus which refers to its precarious position 60m above
the ground. Although its beautifully lit at night, its nearly
impossible to spot the bullet wounds he received during
WWII.QC2, Tramstraat 37. J
Radio Monument (Radiomonument)
Eindhoven and electronic giants Philips are inextricably
linked with one another, even though the Dutch multinational abandoned the city in favour of Amsterdam. In 1936,
when Philips was still beloved by the city, the Radio Monument was erected in the heart of the Stadswandelpark.
This remarkable bronze statue, called Semper Tangens, resembles a shouting woman and stretches over nearly half
of the lake. It commemorates the first radio connection
between the Netherlands and its former colony Indonesia
back in 1926.QE7, Stadswandelpark.
The Little Bulb Maker (Lampenmaakstertje)
Although child labour is still a hot topic these days, less
than a century ago it was quite normal for children to help
contribute to the familys income by working. Long before
robots and automated assembly lines, Philips used little
girls with tiny fingers for the most delicate work needed
to produce light bulbs. This statue was erected in 1966 to
honour the thousands of factory girls who brought the
company worldwide fame for little compensation. The
monument travelled to various locations around the city
before finally settling down in front of the Philips Museum.

Dont believe in aliens? Visit Noord Brabantlaan 1a where
a giant spaceship has taken up residence. The unusual
structure became an instant landmark and a symbol of
the city since it landed in Eindhoven in 1966. Although it
functioned as a science museum especially built for Philips until 1989, the futuristic 77m-high concrete dome was
eventually transformed into a fancy conference centre.

The Blob
If youre into futuristic design dont miss The Blob, which
stands for Binary Large OBject. Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas is the genius behind this 25m-high, organically shaped glass and steel structure that was built as the
gateway to the Admirant shopping mall. Its spacious interior is home to two shops, but smaller Blobs serve as
entrances to nearby underground bike shelters.QB1, 18

Van Abbemuseum
Even if you dont appreciate modern art you can still enjoy
the striking architecture of the Van Abbemuseum. Its distinctive architectural design and picturesque natural setting on the east bank of the River Dommel make it a sight
worth seeing. In fact, two buildings have merged into one,
with the facade of the new building clad in grey natural
stone from the northern part of Scandinavia. This sleek
design forms an expressive contrast between the light
and the surprisingly transparent spaces within. Its beating
heart is a 27m-high tower with inward-sloping walls upon
which every floor opens out creating a modern maze of
sorts.QC3, Bilderdijklaan 10.

Being called the smartest region in the world is

a title that no one would
refuse. Especially when its
given to you several times
(beginning in 2009) by a
respectable institution like
the Intelligent Community
Forum (ICF). Since 2002 the
ICF international think tank
has studied the economic
and social development of communities in the 21st
century. Only a few dozen cities or metropolitan areas in the world have received this prestigious award.
Neighbouring Helmond and Veldhoven are also part
of the smartest region in the world.

Out of town
EDAH Museum
One of the biggest supermarkets in the Netherlands closed
its last shop in 2007, but its cultural inheritance is still visible in the small town of Helmond just outside Eindhoven.
For 90 years this was the home base of EDAH, but today
you can take a trip down memory lane at this museum,
which is partly designed to look like a supermarket. Lots
of household memorabilia is on display and although the
descriptions are only available in Dutch, most of the items
speak for themselves.QJ9, Oostende 167, Helmond, tel.

Jukebox Museum (Jukeboxmuseum)
Jukebox aficionado Chris began his stunning collection of
these music machines four decades ago and now you can
admire the result at this impressive museum. Roughly 150
jukeboxes are on display, most of which date back to the
1950s and 1960s. Play a tune or just marvel at the historic
vending machines, old furniture, gas pumps and vintage
refrigerators.QG9, Hulst 10, St. Oedenrode, tel. (+31) 413

Wings of Liberation
Although World War II ended for the Dutch in May of
1945, the final battle for the liberation of the Netherlands,
better known as Operation Market Garden, began in September 1944. Wings of Liberation is the apt name of this
informative museum spread out over a number of separate buildings. The terrain itself was actually used as an
Allied air base during the war. Youll find all of the usual
vintage military equipment as well as a thrilling 3D movie.

Eindhoven has rooms for

all budgets and tastes

With more than 20 hotels to choose from and 660,000 people staying overnight per year, Eindhoven has and needs a
decent selection of accommodation including some great
budget options. The tourist office can book rooms for you
and may even have some special deals that will save you
some cash.

Tulip Inn Eindhoven Airport
Although Eindhoven Airport pales in comparison to
mighty Schiphol Amsterdam, this relaxed and convenient transport hub is constantly evolving and now
even includes its own hotel - the Tulip Inn. Right above

also offer great views of the main landing strip at this

Boutique Hotel Glow
Who says size doesnt matter? Although the 40 rooms
at this hotel are quite large by Dutch standards, the attached bathrooms are hardly big enough to accommodate an average person. However, the vibrant atmosphere
of this funky, modern place in the centre of town more
than makes up for this minor shortcoming. In addition
to friendly staff, the rooms here are spotlessly clean, have
incredibly comfortable twin beds and offer minimalist dcor. And if, like us, youre not handy with appliances and
cant get the coffee machine to work then pop down to
the lounge on the second floor that offers free hot drinks
day or night and a well-stocked vending machine. Rooms
at the back side tend to be more conducive to sleep, but if
youre looking for signs of human existence then hit the giant rooftop terrace.QB3, Keizersgracht 13 A-B, tel. (+31)

An aptly long name describes an even bigger complex

navigate its hallways. Although the whole layout looks like
it was made with giants in mind, the Spartan rooms tend to
be on the small side. This, of course, is only natural given its

High Tech Campus Eindhoven is the smartest square kilometre in Europe with more than 135 tech companies and
institutes employing some 10,000 researchers, developers
and entrepreneurs working on the cutting edge of future

Al Fresco
Al Fresco is one of the better authentic Italian cuisine options at the High Tech Campus. You probably wouldnt
expect such an elegant and sophisticated fine dining

only downside seems to be its limited opening hours,

Eindhoven for kids

Eindhoven has plenty of options for the little ones. Here
are some of the best.
Aquabest
This manmade beach resort caters primarily to youngsters and is completely family-friendly. Kids love the
DippieDoe childrens park, while the Adventure & Thrill
areas attract both young and old. In addition to a wide
range of water sports like diving and water skiiing, Aquabest also offers a paintball section and an indoor golf
course. A picturesque pier and a grassy picnic area complete Aquabest, which also hosts some of the countrys
finest summer festivals.QG9, Ekkersweijer 1, Best, tel.

De Ontdekfabriek
The Discovery Factory, which is located in one of
Philips old industrial buildings, is an interactive playground for children up to 12 years of age. There are
dozens of interesting activities both inside and out,
but most kids are drawn immediately to the giant
circus playground. In short, its a fun day out for the
family and a good way for children to learn without
the boring text books.QD6, Torenallee 22, www.
