Church of the Holy Eucharists 27th Pine Barrens
Festival is all about fun, friends and forest
By BRIGIT BAUMA

Three reunited friends sharing a group hug, a brother and sister
screaming in delight riding the swing carousel, and a family enjoying a
funnel cake were just a few of the many sights to see at the Church of
the Holy Eucharists 27th annual Pine Barrens Festival last week.
This years festival offered attendees free entertainment, fun games,
raffles and rides, and a broad offering of food selections. However, it
wasnt just for those things that people came to the festival; attendees
came to celebrate the Pine Barrens itself and the neighborhood it has

Burlington County Librarys

2016 Summer Reading Program is
a home run with kids of all ages
who still have time to earn prizes
before celebrating their reading
success at some exciting end-ofsummer parties.
This years eight-week program kicked off in June with a
fun fitness/sports theme that encourages kids to do more than
just read; it urges them to get outside, learn about their communities and enjoy a wide variety of
special library events. So far this
year, participation has been
strong across all branches. And
the program wont end until Aug.
13, so theres still time to join in
the fun.
For every 10 books a child age 5
and under reads, and every four
hours a child age 6 and up reads,
one prize is earned. There is no

reading limit; more reading

means more prizes, which may
include books, coupons, toys,
back-to-school supplies and more.
New this year is an online system for tracking reading progress
or participants can continue to
record their progress in summer
reading Badge Books available
at their local branches. Those
who create online accounts also
have access to interactive step-bystep Activity Tracks customized
for each age group and designed
to encourage learning, curiosity
and fun by visiting parks and museums, taking road trips and
more. Additional online features
include book lists, wish lists, app
lists, learning tips and weekly
emails with book recommendations that link to the BCLS catalog for easy access.
BCLS is also presenting a wide

selection of fun and educational

programs at all branches, including some special system-wide
events such as interactive magic
shows, science experiments and
animal presentations. For a complete list of summer reading programs, go to www.bcls.lib.nj.us
BCLS summer reading participants should also mark their calendars for special end-of-summer
parties to celebrate their reading
achievement at the following locations:
At the county library, Westampton branch, experience the
science of power and energy
through hands-on experiments
with Piccirillo Sciencetellers during the librarys End-of-Summer
Celebration on Aug. 13 at 2 p.m.
Registration is requested.

Conventions are over; now we enter the final stretch

last week, one week after the
Republican National Convention
ended in Cleveland, Ohio.
Now, the two divisive candidates
Hillary Clinton for the Democrats and
Donald Trump for the Republicans
head toward the final stretch in the
race to be our next president.
The general election will be held on
Tuesday, Nov. 8, a little more than three
months from now. And in those three
months, not only are we, the American
public, about to be educated about each
candidates positions and why we
should elect him or her, but were also
about to be bombarded even more
than we already have been with ugly,
political rhetoric through advertising.

very upstanding.
This is going to be an ugly few
months.
For those of us who are more interested in the issues, or who at least hope
the issues will come to the forefront of
the campaigns, presidential debates
will be held on Monday, Sept. 26 at Hofstra University in New York; Sunday,
Oct. 9 at Washington University in St.
Louis; and Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The vice presidential debate will be
held on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Longwood

University in Farmwood, Va.

Whomever you like more whether
it be Clinton, Trump or another candidate such as Libertarian Gary Johnson make sure that you cross off Nov.
8 as a day you have an appointment to
vote.
Voting is one of the most sacred of
rights we have as Americans, so if
youre eligible to vote, you should head
to the polls without reservations. You
only have one chance every four years
to help choose who the leader of our
country will be. Decide to stay on the
sidelines, and youll have passed on the
opportunity to participate in U.S. politics. Nowadays, as politicians have
seemed to become more separated
from their constituents, voting is the
one last way we can exercise our right
to participate.

Obstacles cant stop Strawberry Social

Tabernacle Historical Society hosts successful event despite scheduling issues
The Tabernacle Historical Society held
its annual Strawberry Social on June 11
after overcoming several obstacles.
A scheduling snafu prevented the society from utilizing its planned new location
inside a local church.
Publicity had already been sent out and
signs re-painted to reflect the change of
venue. Members of the society scrambled
to correct the signs and (wherever possible) the publicity.
The church location had always been the
rain-event plan in the past, but could not be
utilized this year even as a back up. Then,
the weather forecast started calling for af-

ternoon thunderstorms!
In spite of the problems, the society was
able to hold the event on the grounds of the
Tabernacle Town Hall and a rain location
was also found inside another local
church.
For several hours society volunteers
served up large portions of cake (five varieties) topped with generous servings of
strawberries and whipped cream. Hot
dogs with all the fixings were also sold and
drinks were offered for free.
Families, old friends, long-time residents and new arrivals all sat down to
enjoy the food and cordial atmosphere of a

small town summer gathering. THS Secretary Ann Franzen noted, This event
brings people in the town together in a
sweet old-fashioned way. It would not have
been possible without the hard work of our
dedicated members.
All funds raised at the event and from
the sale of merchandise will be used to
fund an annual scholarship and to help
with the many projects the society has undertaken.
The Tabernacle Historical Society meets
on the second Thursday of most months.

Festival a tradition for many local families

rens Festival too is more than just
a festival. It is also a way to appreciate the Pine Barrens itself.
I want my kids to see this
place, this amazing place. The
Pine Barrens is a very special
place I want them to experience.
The natural world here is incredibly peaceful This part of the
country, it is really rare. It is so
cool to be here and still so close to
the city, but still come back to the
woods, Jen said.

created.
There is just something so
special about the Pine Barrens. I
travel a lot and there is no place
like here. It just has this warm
feeling and it is so friendly, Jen
Nowicki-Clark, formerly of Medford, said.
For almost every festival-goer,
the Pine Barrens Festival is a tradition. Gerri and Ted Hughes of
Southampton have been coming
to the festival for years, first
bringing their children to the festival and now bringing their
grandchildren. Tom and April
Weiss of Tabernacle have been
coming for the past 11 years with
their kids, and Maria, Kayla and
Jake Raparelli, also of Tabernacle, come out for their friends and
church.
We love it. We look forward to
it each year, Gerri said.
The Clarks come to visit family
around this time each year, as
they now live in Tucson, Ariz.
They always try to plan their visit
so they can go to the festival.
This is my second time here
I like the Alien Abduction
ride, Julian Clark said.
He likes the rides. I like going
over to the tent and catching up
with friends, Jen said.
For her, and many others, the
festival is a great time to catch up
with friends of the Pine Barren
towns. Kayla, now a college student, is usually away from the
area until the summer, but the
festival offers her the opportunity
to see her hometown friends.
It brings back all of (Kaylas)
high school friends, who still
come here and are all from different towns. They all are home for
the summer and this is where
they all meet up. It is so nice,
Maria said.
For the Weisses, seeing family
and friends is the best part of the
festival. However, Tom said it didnt necessarily have to be a festival; it could be anything, like a
bonfire, it is just a great way to
catch up and have fun with everyone of the Pine Barrens.
It is definitely the highlight of
