Integrated Design Project II

1.0 Introduction

1.1. Project Definition

The purpose of this project was to design and produce
drawings along with estimates of an office building or
warehouse. Idea sketches with dimensions were provided
upon which we were to use to start our design. Loads acting
on the structure were to be chosen based on our concept
design and materials used (which includes the live loads and
dead loads (Appendix A). The most critical floor slab, beam,
column and footing were to be designed with the aid of
drawings, followed by producing a Bill of Quantities to
establish the amount of material needed and an estimate
costing of the structure.

1.2. Objectives
This project will be based on designing an office building and
the following objectives were undertaken during the course of
the project:

Determine the loads produced on the structure based

on materials chosen

Calculate and design the critical members of the

structure such as the floor slab, beam, column and
footing (Drawing 4.1)

Produce drawings of the building and critical

members using AutoCAD

Produce a Bill of Quantities based on the designs for

the structure

Produce a final cost estimate for the structure

Integrated Design Project II

2.0 Discussion

2.1. Design Criteria

The office building had have a total dimension of twelve (12)
meters in width by fifty (50) meters in length. The building
was also designed to accommodate efficient office space,
storage and also a water closet amongst the two stores.
(Drawing 4.10 and 4.11)

2.1.1 Load Definition

As defined by the Building Code Requirements for Structural
Concrete (ACI 318-05) and Commentary, The terms dead
load and live load refer to the unfactored loads (service loads)
specified or defined by the general building code. For
designing the critical members of the building, the following
loads were considered (Drawing 4.2) :

Roof Dead Load 7.5 KN/m2

-Live Load 1.5 KN/m2

Slab Dead Load 0.5 KN/m2

-Live Load 3.0 KN/m2

Walls Dead Load 1.5 KN/m2

2014/07/18

4
Integrated Design Project II

2.2. Codes, Standards and Literature

The office building was designed in accordance to the
Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI
318-05) and Commentary manual.
Description

ACI Code
9.2.1 (9-3)

Required strength

(c) Concrete not exposed to weather or in contact
with ground: Slabs, walls, joists

7.6.1

Spacing limits for reinforcement

The minimum clear spacing between parallel
bars in a layer shall be db, but not less than 1 inch

10.2 & 10.3 Flexure and Axial Loads

Design assumptions (10.2)
General principles and requirements (10.3)

11.3.1.1

Integrated Design Project II

2.3 Concept Design

The office building was to be made up of individual frames
twelve (12) meters in width and eight (8) meters in height.
This frame contained two stores, the first floor and the second
floor. The total length of the structure was to be fifty (50)
meters which needed eleven (11) frames spaced at five (5)
meters respectively.
The floor slab would be designed and calculated first taking
into consideration the loads being applied to the structure.
Wind loads and seismic loads were not considered in this
design. After the floor slab was determined, the critical beam
dimensions were calculated followed by the column and
footing for the structure.
After designs were established drawings were done using
AutoCAD software as well as estimates were done to produce
a Material List and also a Bill of Quantities showing the cost
to construct the office building.
