About Pench
Pench National Park, located in the Seoni district of Southern Madhya Pradesh, is a popular
destination in Madhya Pradesh. Pench National Park was established to preserve the tiger
which is an endangered species now.
Pench National Park is situated on the Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra border on the Nagpur
Jabalpur National Highway 7 at a distance of about 90 km from Nagpur. Located in the AVSM
(Aravali, Vindhyanchal, Satpura and Maikal Ranges) belt, Pench National Park largely covers
the densely forested areas of Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh.
The Pench Tiger Reserve includes the Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park, the Mowgli
Pench Sanctuary and a buffer. River Pench bifurcates the National Park and is the lifeline of the
Park, as it sustains the existence of richly diverse forms of flora and fauna.
An area of 449.39 sq km was declared as Pench Sanctuary in the year 1977. An area of
292.85 sq km was carved out of Pench Sanctuary in the year 1983 and it was declared Pench
National Park. The remaining 118.31 sq km remained as Pench Sanctuary.
In 1992, the park area was increased to 757.89 sq. km, which included both the National Park
and the Sanctuary and was declared as the 19th Tiger Reserve of India by the Central
Government. In the year 2002, Pench National Park was re-notified as Indira Priyadarshini
Pench National Park and Pench Sanctuary was re-notified as Mowgli Pench Sanctuary.
The rocky terrain of the Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park has many gentle slopes that
are crisscrossed by water bodies. There are many flat topped hills that provide views of the
surrounding dense forests.
The vegetation found here is a mix of southern tropical dry deciduous teaks and southern
tropical mixed deciduous forest along with diverse species of shrubs, trees, and climbers. It is
estimated that the vegetation of Pench consist of more than 1200 species of plant species
including endangered and rare species along with several ethno-botanical plants.
Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park sustains a diverse wildlife, including endangered and
rare species, along with 285 species of resident and migratory birds, 50 species of fish, 10
amphibians, 30 reptiles, 45 butterflies, 54 moths and numerous other insects.
The descriptions of the area of Pench Tiger Reserve can be found in the ancient book Ain-iAkbari. Its topography and wildlife became the theme of books like Seonee - Camp life in
Satpura Hills, Mammalia of India and Ceylon and Denizens of the Jungle by Robert Armitage
Strendale, 'Highlands of Central India' by Forsyth, and Wild Animals of Central India' by Dunbar
Brander. The Pench Tiger Reserve and its immediate surroundings were the original setting for
The Jungle Book which was written by Rudyard Kipling.

Featured review about Pench

Pench - A drop of Rainforest
"Tiger, tiger burning bright,
In the forests of the night.
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
There are hardly words that can describe the experience of catching a glimpse of the Tiger. Not
a tiger, the Tiger. The feline race is known for its nimble, sleek, graceful sensuousness, (except
maybe Garfield), and the Tiger just saunters to the top of the big cat list. It is the biggest cat and
hides behind no mane. It is also one of the most endangered creatures in the world, with fewer
than 1500 remaining in India. In 1972, the Government of India established Project Tiger, a
conservation project with the intention of saving the species. The tiger population has only
decreased since then and continues to do so every day, for a host of shameful reasons.
Of the Project Tiger reserves, Pench National park and Wildlife Sanctuary is one. If youre
looking for a nice outdoorsy holiday rubbing shoulders with some of natures finest, a trip to
Pench has to be on your cards.
Facts
Remember Mowgli? Well the Jungle in the Jungle Book is Pench Tiger Reserve, where the
mighty Sher Khan hunts, through Rudyard Kiplings immortalizing book.
Named after the river that runs through it, Pench National Park is located to the south of the
Satpura Hills, and straddles Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. 70 kms from Nagpur, it
encompasses an area of 758sqkm of which 299sqkm forms the core, known as
PriyadarshiniPench National Park, as well as the Mowgli Pench Sanctuary, and 464sqkm is the
surrounding buffer area. It is the 19th Project Tiger Reserve in India, declared so in 1992.
Weather:
The forested area of Pench is of the tropical moist deciduous kind with predominantly broadleafed trees. Vegetation varies from deep valleys to dry forests. The area receives annual
rainfall between 100 to 200cms and has distinct dry and rainy seasons.
Summer here is from March to mid-June, during which the river tends to dry up, and
temperatures range between 26-42 degrees. The Monsoons from mid-June to September is the
time when the forest flourishes and the park is closed, reopening again for a long winter from
November to February. The temperature during winter has two sets where in the first half from
November to February, it ranges from as little as 3 degrees to 16 degrees. In the second half
from February to March-April, temperatures are between 16 and 26 degrees.
The best time to visit Pench is between February and April,

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Flora and Fauna:

Pench is known for its rich diversity and density of vegetation. There are over 1200 species of
plants, including rare and endangered ones. For one, the Kullu tree usually catches people offguard with its stark white against the lush green surroundings.
Apart from the tiger, Pench is inhabited by gaurs, cheetal, sambar, nilgai, wild dogs, wild pigs,
leopards, wolves, as well as a host of other creatures.
A birdwatchers paradise, over 285 species of resident and migratory birds including the
Malabar Pied Hornbill, Indian Pitta, Osprey, Grey-headed fishing Eagle and the White-eyed
Buzzard call Pench home, or a stopover. Four endangered species of vultures can be found
here as well as a beautiful gathering of butterflies and moths.
If youre here in the winter, youll be able to catch a flock of beautiful migratory birds amongst
which are the Brahmini Duck, Pochards, Barheaded Geese, Coots, etc. which are usually
around the tanks and Reservoir within the Park.
Activities & things to do: A wildlife safari through Pench can be a breath-taking experience. It
could be a jeep, elephant or walking one and you can go on the morning safari or the evening
one, or even better, both.
A Park, like a mini country is usually also divided into smaller bits and named, for easy
reference. Some areas in the Park that are worthy of a mention are:
Sitaghat: This beautiful area is by the river and makes for a beautiful photograph. As the area is
quite exposed, most animals stay away as they can either see or sense you.
Alikatta: It would seem that the Park has been planned with Alikatta as its Rome, simply
because all roads somehow lead back to it. Elephat rides begin from here and this area
provides ample opportunity to watch grazing herds.
Raiyakassa: There is a watchtower built here, where park authorities allow one to spend the
night. What an experience: to be out in the middle of a jungle, on a cement structure right in the
lap of jungle life, by the Pench river!
Other areas are Chhindimata Road, Doob Road, Bodhanala Range and Kalapahad.
Tigers tend to be spotted in the wee hours of the morning as theyre returning home from their
hunt or midnight jaunt. Evening safaris can catch the magnificent creature resting itself in the
sun or out for a short walk. By nature, tigers are reclusive mammals and tend to not bask in the
suns glory, unlike lions. At Pench they are most likely to be found by the river as the highest
prey concentration is found here,
The census in 2011 has noted that there are just about 25 tigers that call the Park home.
Other national parks around the area are the Bandhavgarh National Park located in the Umaria
district in Madhya Pradesh as well as the Kanha National Park, which features in Jungle Book
as well. The Nagizra Sanctuary and the Navegaon National Park are also close to Pench.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Pench lies in the Seoni district of Madhya
Pradesh.

Air:Sonegaon Airport in Nagpur is around 92kms from Pench. Nagpur is well connected to the
rest of India, especially so from Mumbai and Delhi. Jabalpur, 192kms from Pench is another
option which is very well connected from Delhi.
Rail:The nearest railway station is Seoni, 30kms from the Park and is on the ChhindwaraJabalpur line, with regular trains coming in from and going to Mumbai.Ramtek is also an option
on the railway line. Rickshaws are usually available from the station though it is best to arrange
to be driven to your hotel, better yet to inform your hotel to provide the conveyance.
Another more accessible option is Nagpur, which is 80 kms from the park, but has more trains
stopping by.
Road:Once again, Seoni bus stand is the closest to Pench. Seoni is very well connected by
road, and hence bus, within Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Nagpur is also an option, and
the better connected of the two." - Bhagi R, Mumbai, Jan 24, 2012
