The art of intEgrating today what we need tomorrow

[STORY]

By: Herbert Dreisiti

Liveability is an ever-changing precept. It depends on peoples perceptions and expectations, and is significantly different from culture to
culture. As a general idea, however, liveability is understood at three levels:

The physical level in which we can provide technical excellence

The social level in which we can increase social knowledge, provide space for interaction as by public participation, and influence good governance

The cultural level in which we can provide inspiration and contribute to cultural competence

The biggest challenge is the space of urbanization taking place in the world today. It is incredible that ,within our generation, cities now host
more than half of all mankind; soon it will be two-thirds. Looking at challenges of population, climate change, end of resources, loss of biodiversity, etc.
the real battle of this planet is with human consumption and lifestyle expectations. Cities are increasingly important; decisions on how we will live or survive will be taken in cities. Urbanization has created enormous problems, but it might also be the key to solutions.
Looking to history, people gathered in villages and towns to seek protection against nature and enemies, to share and divide work and be more
efficient in production and service processes, and to give solidarity and help each other-physically and mentally. The creation and development of art and
culture were strongly connected to cities where people could gather to find inspiration and independence.

Aims to foster a gardening culture among the residencies. It will
guide residents, students and workers to setup and sustain their
community gardening projects where they can gather to plant and
care for their own favorite plants including flowers, spices, vegetables, and fruit trees. It aspires to make a historical education not
only for children. Beyond incorporating Green design fea-

tures, the project also adopts a holistic environmental approach by encouraging users to conserve energy and participate activity in the sustainable efforts of the housing units
and the environment at large.
Carbon dioxide is a naturally occurring chemical compound, produced by respiration of all living organisms. It is exhaled in the
breath of humans and land animals. The environmental effects of
carbon dioxide are of significant interest. Carbon dioxide is an
important greenhouse gas, warming the Earth's surface to a
higher temperature by reducing outward radiation. In the near
future the CO2 will reach an alarming level. We will no longer
have space for parks and vegetation. Tall buildings occupy every
space in our cities. What is to be done? Vertical Nature offers a
solution to this problem. The building resembles a glass. It's half
filled with water, half with vegetation. The top of the building
structure is light , being covered with translucent scales that are
designed to capture sunlight and wind. The whole building works
as an ecosystem. The entire building is connected to underground rivers so that the water is constantly filtered. Carbon dioxide is pulled into the building where it's transformed into oxygen.

All zones can be used for children parties and workshops. The
main aim of the project is to connect people from early age
with natural shapes. It was conceptualized as a space not only
for gardening activities, but also an area where the community
can come together and unwind, away from the city. As such, a
picnic zone and a playground area were incorporated alongside the gardening plot to facilitate social activities.

Materials for the construction of the garden were mainly

sourced locally, keeping the costs and energy required for
transportation low. Most of the materials were organic such as
soil, rock, wood, and bamboo. Inorganic materials such as
plastic and tarp were only used to create the raised bed, which
had to use water-resistant materials to retain water. To minimize environmental impact on the land, existing large trees on
the site were preserved.

SOLAR FLOWER LAWN

is a unique design concept for an open park
that generates its energy from state of the
art, dare we say, beautiful, solar flowers for
emission free recharging of electrical advantage. The design sees an open park that
is covered in a flower like structures with
photovoltaic petals. The petals, that follow
the sun, collect the power from the sun,
sending it to a collection point in the flowers stem, which electricity would simply
plug into. And the multi-tasking petals also
provide shade for the residents too, ideal for
use in countries like Philippines that are
bathed in soaring sun temperatures from
dawn to dusk!
Not only is the SOLAR FLOWER LAWN energy efficient it would also be a visual extravaganza!

Free up landscape is one of our objectives is to minimize

providing more green space and communal space.
CONCEPT STATEMENT:
Enhancing the urban landscape and reducing environmental impact of the built urban
environment with the power of plants.
In my Ecological Urbanism Project I had a pragmatic approach to my design. One of my
reflections brought up the thought of a manipulated city with designed green spaces.
Some tragedy I see in this is: can manipulated and planned natural spaces be classified as real, organic experiences? Meaning, when we plan to design living natural systems in buildings, is this real nature or is this some hybrid ideology of our existence
and application of nature to our sense and style of living? Passive, active, interactive, aesthetic, and gathering programs are the foundational opportunities within the site to improve the
community on a social hierarchy.

One of the main ideas I had for my project was to maintain and rebuild severed connections with nature, our potential, to promote both vertical and horizontal movement and
to have the possibilities of space not withered by program. The community will create
atmosphere that caters to nurturing those who spend their lives nurturing other. The
space will include features which have proven to reduce physiological changes in
health mentally. I will incorporate color and rhythm that stimulates natural scenery.
Scale will be used to uplift spirits through large spaces with natural light. Texture will
mimic organic forms thorough out the center while balance and harmony in the design
will evoke a sense of health and peace of mind.

Environmental Strategy

the shade of rooftop trees and evaporation

from the greenery on ground cool the living space of
the house. Besides these, thick soil layer works as
heat insulator and window placement enhances cross
ventilation all of those contributes to reduce AC use in
the building , and open the lifestyle to nature.

Economy

the plan combines farming w/ office and residential stories. Irrigation - filtered, sterilized,
wastewater from sewage system can be used for irrigation.

1. Solar panel - energy is supplied by rotating solar

panel that follows the sun, drives interior cooling/
heating system
2. Glass panels- clear coating of titanium oxide collects pollutants and makes rain slide down the
glass where it is collected and used for watering.
3. Architecture - cross design allows maximum light
into center. The architecture also took into consideration of the tropical climate by passive features such as
adequately providing diffused natural light for the childrens classes and natural ventilation.

4. Green walls are found most often in urban environments where the plants reduce overall temperatures
of the building. The primary cause of heat buil-up in
cities is insolation, the absorption of solar radiation by
roads and buildings in the city and the storage of this
heat in the building material and its subsequent reradiation. Plant surfaces however, as a result of transportation, do not rise more than 4-5 degrees Celsius
above the ambient and are sometimes cooler. Living
walls may also be a means for water reuse. The plants
may purify slightly polluted water(such as greywater)
by absorbing the dissolved nutrients. Bacteria mineralize the organic components to make them available to
the plants. Living walls are particularly suitable for cities, as they allow good use of available vertical surface
areas. They are also suitable in arid areas, as the circulating water on a vertical wall is less likely to evaporate than in horizontal gardens. alleviate sick building
syndrome.

I USED THE BASIC COLORS OF EARTH.

GREEN,BLUE,YELLOW,RED
WHEN COMBINED IT WILL FORM THE
SECONDARY COLORS (RAINBOW COLOR)

ROOF TOP COMMUNITY

The green roof is not only served as the place for social
gathering or venue for any celebration but it will also be
used as a roof farm by allowing people to plant some
vegetables for their families or to make a living.
The rooftop will attenuate rainwater, and irrigate the eco systems living at each floor- The hanging gardens should be selfsufficiently hydrating, while providing additional storm water
retention in the basement for the surround cathment area.
Community gardens provide fresh produce and plants as well
as satisfying labor, neighborhood improvement, sense of community and connection to the environment. They are publicity
functioning in terms of ownership, access, and management,
as well as typically owned in trust by local governments or not
for profit associations. Community gardens may help alleviate
one effect of climate change, which is expected to cause a
global decline in agricultural output, making fresh produce increasingly unaffordable. Community gardens encourage an urban community's food security, allowing citizens to grow their
own food or for others to donate what they have grown. Advocates say locally grown food decreases a community's reliance
on fossil fuels for transport of food from large agricultural areas and reduces a society's overall use of fossil fuels to drive in
agricultural machinery. Community gardens improve user's
health through increased fresh vegetable consumption and
providing a venue for exercise. The gardens also combat two
forms of alienation that plague modern urban life, by bringing
urban gardeners closer in touch with the source of their food,
and by breaking down isolation by creating a social community.
Community gardens provide other social benefits, such as the
sharing of food production knowledge with the wider community and safer living spaces.
