1.

Explain the barriers to communication that exist when you discuss

a subject with your instructor/professor in the classroom.
In communication, there are types of barriers that hinders us from
achieving the full depth understanding of a thing. The three types of barriers
are: semantic noise, external noise, and internal noise. We will further
elaborate below how each affects us from attaining an effective
communication.
First of all, we will define what semantic noise is. You know when you
are talking to a friend, and someone in the background says something
particularly offensive to the person you are talking to. That is semantic
noise. Noise is anything that interrupts communication that is taking place.
It is very negative , and impacts people in ways that some people don't even
consider.
External noise, is a kind of disturbance in communication which comes
from the outside. The sources of external noise are noise by running vehicles
and machines, or noise from the streets. Thus, this is a noise that you
cannot control.
Lastly, the noise that originates inside the office room (for example) is
called internal noise. The noise caused due to conversation in office, rustling
papers, and many more. Internal noise can be controlled by using sound
absorbing materials and separation of noisy equipments. Another example is
the random thoughts for instance which keep you from concentrating on a
task.
All of these were the barriers to communication. In order to meet the
specific goal, one should know how to deal with these mentioned barriers
that could greatly affect our work. We cannot refrain from encountering
these, but we can find some sort of ways to properly lessen the distractions
ahead.
2. Select a situation in which you made a wrong inference, analyze
how the misinterpretation was made and discuss how you might
avoid similar misinterpretations in the future. How important is
feedback as an aid to avoiding inference problems?
There was a time that I was so stressed that I was not able to review
someone's document since it was almost the deadline. I was actually

cramming by that time and in addition, it was a group work. We were asked
to make a compilation of some outstanding essays regarding "Poverty".
Going back, one of my group mates had sent to me his finished work.
Of course, he followed then a remark that I should review what he had sent
to me and check if there are any errors made in the document. On my side,
I was sure enough that he did his part correctly and since I am relying to the
fact that he is the "smart" ones in the class, it gave me a confidence that he
would not make any error in his work.
At the end of the day, our teacher checked our group work and using
her brick red ballpoint pen, she directly writes what is the error noticed in
the compilation. The time came when our work was returned. What we saw
was a comment in large size. "ARE YOU SURE THAT THIS PART IS ABOUT
"POVERTY"?". I started to look back who did that part and it was "him" who
told me to check his work. That point was my mistake because I did not
made any feedback upon his work. If I had checked his work and did not
stay confident just because of the fact that he's "smart", I would have been
able to tell him his errors.
Starting from that time, I realized that feedback was really very
important in every work done. To ensure the quality and accuracy, one
should not forget to recheck ones work regardless of that person's qualities.
We should not assume that in all aspect, he will correctly done everything in
the end. To avoid further inconveniences, we need to give and have
feedbacks in such things.
3. Check the organizational structure of your university. Try to illustrate what
communication approach is applicable in the organization.

It should be formal communication with upward, downward, and

horizontal approach which depends on the situation. Horizontal approach is
for the levels with the same purpose and upward for the president because it
is the most respected position in my university. While announcements
regarding school matters should be approached downward because of its
students/employees.
4. How would you communicate the following?
a. A promotion to one of your employees.
I will stood properly in front of everyone and proudly saying that I
would like to congratulate everyone for doing a job well done and special
mentioning that one of them did an extra effort to make himself considered
as a person who is qualified to get a promotion. An end speech will be also
noted that I am still looking forward that the rest will do their job better than
today.
b. Criticism of one of your employees for work poorly done.
I will talk to him privately and tell him that he lacks training in this
specific field and I will also let him know that I am ready to help him to do
things properly. Also, with my conversation with him, I will utter encouraging
words throughout the conversation.
c. Instructions for operation of a simple office machine.
With a clear and well modulated voice, I will guide them on how it is
supposedly done and lend them a hand each time they are clueless on what
is the next thing to do.
d. An announcement to marketing personnel that sales dropped by
25% during the last quarter and some employees may need to be laid off.
I will gather everyone in a conference room and through proper
approach, I will calmly tell them first the bad news and that we need to work
harder and smarter in the next days so that the sales will increase. I will also
invite them in a recreational activity so that they will be relaxed and perform
better and give them encouraging words along the short vacation.
