Abstract

This study presents the results of the laboratory test on the comparison of
the theoretical and the actual failure of an isolated footing resting on piles.
The group made a scaled down model of an actual footing to make the
comparison. And computed its compressive strength against wide beam
shear to be 20.7678 kN, the capacity against punching shear to be 39.5140
kN, and the capacity against bending stress to be 132.9358 kN. After 21 days
of curing the concrete footing model, the model was subjected to
compressive strength test under a Universal Testing Machine and observe
that wide beam shear occured. It yielded a capacity of 62.91 kN againts wide
beam shear (Pactual), about 33% more than that of the theoretical. The
results obtained showed that most of the theories and computed capacities of
the footing were never met. It may be due to wrong execution in the actual
making of the footing.

Conclusion

The main objective of this study is to compare the actual and theoritical
failure of an isolated footing. With the result gathered after conducting the
test, the group concluded that only few of the theories matches with the
actual. After testing the footing model on the UTM, wide beam shearing was
observed. The footing managed to resist punching shear due to the help of
the reinforcement bars. Based on the analysis, the footing should be able to
resist 20.7678 kN load on wide beam shear. The test showed the footing
model was able to resist 62.91 kN before shearing occured.

Sources of error may come from improper mixing of concrete since

it is hard to get an accurate and precise and amount of cement, sand,
and gravel to be used in the actual footing with the right measuring
instruments. Some may also come from human error which includes

the actual mixing and pouring of concrete wherein if not properly

poured, air voids might be produced as well as the arrangement or
symmetry of the reinforcements especially the formworks. If it is
improperly arranged, the usual assumption for its failure may not be
satisfied.
