AfterreadingTonyWagnersinvigoratingchaptertitledReinventingtheEducationProfession

,Ibegantorealizethatwearevictimsofstayinginourown
castleasWagnerputsit(Wagner,2014,p.160),meaningweoftendontcollaborateandhelp
oneanother.Manyofmycolleagueshavebeendoingthesamethingforalongtime,andthe
caliberofstudentthatwearereceivinghaschanged.Wemustactaccordingly.Thispastyear,I
wasthepointpersonforourChromebooksthatwehaveforeachofourstudents..Inthis
position,Iwastoattendconferencesandfindprogramsthatworkedwellandthatourstudents
respondedtoinarigorousmanner.Mygoalforthisupcomingschoolyearistotaketheresearch
thatIdidformyownclassroom,andhostamonthlycollaborativetohelptherestofmyteamto
beginincorporatingthistechnologyintotheirownpedagogy.Thisisimportanttomebecauseit
isagreatfeelingwhenyoufindaresourcethatisexcitingandoriginal,andyourstudentsfeelthe
sameway.Iwouldliketosharethisexcitementwithmycolleaguessothattheirlessonsare
moreengagingandallowthestudentstobuyinwithmycolleagues,justastheydoinmy
classroom.

ThispaperexplorestheresearchthatIconductedfromonlinejournals,articlesandbooksthat
exploredifferenttypesofprofessionaldevelopmentthatwouldbeconducivetoincreasingthe
useoftechnologyinschoolsites.Ialsolookedintowhythereisaneedforthiskindof
professionaldevelopment.Researchquestionsincludehowtoaddressthosewhoareresistantto
technologyimplementationaswellasthosewhowillrespondwelltothiskindofprofessional
development.Severalreferencessaythatveteranteachershavereportedthattheyfeltmost
comfortablewithtechnologywhentheyhadsomeonethattheycouldtalktoaboutwhattheyare
learningandimplementing(Snoeyink&Ertmer,2001,p.107).Thereisananalysisofbest
practicesoftechnologyprofessionaldevelopment,aswellasexpectedimpactofthese
professionaldevelopmentsessions.Theresearchsuggeststhatinorderfortechnologyto
properlyimplemented,teachersneedregularinformationalsessionsthatintroducerelevanttools
gradually.TheliteratureshowsthatoneshotPDisnoteffective,anditisimportantto
introduceanewandrelevanttooloneatatime(Lawless&Pellegrino,2007,p.595).Theuseof
theSAMRModel(SubstitutionAugmentationModificationRedefinitionModel)wouldbean
appropriatewayforteacherstomeasureandidentifytheirtechnologyuseintheirclassrooms
(JacobsIsrael&MoorefieldLang,2013).Thereisaleadershipcomponenttotheprofessional
developmentthattakesnoteofthosewhorespondwelltoimplementationandthereforewilltake
theschoolsitetothenextlevelandcontinuetodevelopnewleadersandcommittedteachers.

Theneedfortheretobetraininginthetechnologythatwehavereceivedisgreat,especiallyfor
theveteranteachersatmysite.Outofthetwentysixteachersthatareatmysite,onlyabout
30%ofthemusethetechnologyeverydayintheirclassrooms.Thistechnology"coaching"that
Iamproposingwillallowteacherstohavethesupportthattheyneedtotryoutnewtechnology,
aswellashaveasoundingboardtobouncenewideasoffofandtoreceivefeedback.Many
districtshavestartedhiringa"technologycoach"or"educationalcoach"fortheirschools,and
withcommoncore,thesepositionsarebecomingmorefrequentalloverthecountry.Currently,
thereisnotechnologycoachatmysite.Therearealsonoformalprofessionaldevelopment
trainingsplannedinregardstotechnology.Therefore,byestablishingacommunityof
professionaltechnologylearners,Iamimmenselygoingtobeimprovingthesituationatmysite.
Objective:Whatisyourgoalinonesentence?
Mygoalistoteachteachershowtoteachusingtechnologyandcultivatetechnologyleaders.
ActionPlan:Thisiswhereyouplanthedetailsoftheproject.
Whatwillbedone?
Plannedandorganizedprofessionaldevelopmentwithatechnology
implementationfocus.TeacherswillparticipateinwaystofurthertheiruseofChromebooksin
theirclassroomssothattheirstudentsdevelop21stcenturyskills.Specifictraininginhowtouse
GoogleClassroom,Socrative,Kahoot,Frontrowed.com,Newsela,andQuizletwillbeshown.
Afterafewsessions,teacherswillsharewhattheyareusingandwhattheyareinterestedin.
Whenwillitbedone?
Ourfirsttrainingwillbeinthefirstmonthofschoolheldonthe
staffmeetingthatissetforthescheduledminimumdays.Alltrainingswillbeheldoncea
month,andwilllastabout30minutesduringourendofthemonthminimumdaytrainings.
Whowilldoit?
Thefirstsessionwillbeledbymeandoureducationalcoach.Afterthat
initialsession,otherteachersthatarecomfortablesharingwilllead.Thisispartofmyplanto
sharemyenthusiasmwithothersandcultivateleaders.
Howmuchwillitcost?
Thistrainingcanbefree,asitwillbeconductedbymyselfand
otherstaffmembers.Forthepurposeofformality,thecostperyearformyproposalis$16,000.
Thiscostincludespossiblecontractingservices,conferenceregistrationsandsubstitutecoverage.
Iamlookingintopossiblestipendcoverages,howeverthismaybeviewedasanadjunctduty,
whichwearerequiredtohaveatleastthree.
Howwillyoudetermineifyouaremakingsuccessfulprogress?
Atthebeginningofthe
year,IwillassesswhoisusingChromebooksandforwhatpercentofthetimeusingsurveys
createdwithGoogleForms.Atleastonceamonthjustbeforeourmeetings,Iwillsendout
anothersurveywithappropriateadjustmentstoseeifteachersareincreasingtheirChromebook
usage.Ifthatnumberincreasesbyatleast10%,Iwillcallthatsuccessfulprogress.Iwillalso
bedoingadditionalresearchtoseeif10%isanappropriateamountofgrowth.
