RogerSabintracesthehistoryofadultcomicsbacktothepoliticalcartoonspublishedinbroadsheets
sincethe19thcentury.[1]In1930's,therewereclandestinelyproducedtijuanabiblesrectangular,eight
pagepamphletswithblackprintingoncheapwhitepaper.Theartworkrangedfromexcellenttoutterly
crudeandwassometimesalsoracist(Blackswerecaricaturedwithhugelipsandextrudingeyes).Their
storieswereexplicitsexualescapadesusuallyfeaturingwellknowncartooncharacters,politicalfigures
ormoviestars(usedwithoutpermission).
Soldunderthecounterinplacesliketobaccostoresandburlesquehouses,millionsofthetijuanabibles
weresoldattheheightoftheirpopularityinthe1930s.TheywentintoasteepdeclineafterWorldWarII
andbythemid1950sonlyasmalltrickleofnewproductwasstillappearingonthemarket,mainlyin
theformofcheaplyprinted,poorlydrawnandtastelesslittleeightpagerswhichsoldfor10centseachin
rundowncandystores,gasstations,andschoolyards,circulatingmainlyamongdelinquentteenagers.
Startingin1932,NormanPettdrewastripcalledJanefortheBritishDailyMirrornewspaper.The
heroinewouldoftenfindherselfinawkwardsituationswhereshewouldloseherclothingforonereason
oranother.Thestripwaswrittentosomeextentforamilitaryaudiencetoboostthemoraleoftroops
awayfromhome.WinstonChurchillsaidthatJanewasBritain's"secretweapon".[2]
IntheUnitedStates,pulpmagazinessuchasHarryDonenfeld'sSpicyDetectivefeaturedcomicson
heroineswholosetheirclothing,suchasAdolpheBarreaux'sSallytheSleuthwhichdebutedin1934.
ManyoftheearlycomicpublishersgottheirstartinthepulpswithDonenfeldforinstancegoingonto
foundDCComics.FictionHousesimilarlystartedasapulpmagazinepublisher,butin1938,released

JumboComicsfeaturingSheena,QueenoftheJungle,thefirstofmanyscantilycladjunglegirls.Fiction
Housecomicsroutinelyfeaturedattractivewomenonthecovers,atrendwhichlaterbecamereferredto
as'goodgirlart.'In1941,QualityComicsputoutPoliceComicsfeaturingPhantomLady,ascantily
cladcrimefighter.FoxFeatureSyndicateeventuallybeganpublishingPhantomLadywhereshewas
drawnbyMattBaker,oneofthemostfamous'goodgirl'artists.MiltonCaniffstartedproducingthe
comicstripMaleCallin1943,andBillWardcameoutwithTorchyin1944featuringsexyheroines.
Pulpmagazineswerealsoknownfortheirviolence.TheShadowcarriedtwogunsforkillingcriminals,
andBatmanalsowieldedagunfrom1939through1944beforegivingitup.Crimeandhorrorcomics
werepopulargenresinthelate1940sandearly1950swithsuchtitlesasLevGleasonPublications'
CrimeDoesNotPay,ECComics'CrimeSuspenstories,CryptofTerror,TalesFromtheCryptandVault
ofHorrorallenjoyingbriefspellsofinterest.ItisbelievedthatEChadoneofthebestsellinglinesat
thetime.HarveyKurtzmanwasoneofthekeywritersforEC,andartistssuchasWallyWoodorAl
Williamsonbegantodoresearchforeachnewstoryfarbeyondwhathadbeenseenintitlespublishedup
tothattime.
Inthe1950sIrvingKlawpublishedalineofundergroundfetishandbondagecomicsbyartistslikeEric
Stanton,JohnWillie,andGeneBilbrew.Theseneverachievedwidespreadpopularitybutwerekeptin
printformanyyears,soldthroughKlaw'smailordercatalogtothesamecustomerswhoboughthis
bondagephotographsofBettiePage.Notquiteobsceneenoughtowarrantprosecution,theyskirtedthe
limitsoflegalitybyavoidingfullfrontalnudityintheirdepictions.

TheComicsCodeAuthority
In1954,apsychologistDr.FredricWerthamcameoutwithabookSeductionoftheInnocentthat
claimedthattheriseinjuveniledelinquencybeingreportedinthenewsatthetimewasfueledbycomic
books.HeclaimedthatBatmanandRobinwereencouraginghomosexuality,anddecriedthebondage
seeninWonderWomen'sbook.ECComicscameundercriticismforthegraphicviolenceandgoreseen
initscrimeandhorrorbooks.ECpublisherWilliamGaineswascalledbeforeaSenatecommitteeto
testify,butheremaineddefensivesayingthathewasalreadycensoringthemoreextremethingsfromhis
books.Partlyinordertoavoidthegovernmentimposingasolution,theothermajorpublishersbanded
togethertoformtheComicsCodeAuthoritywhichwouldscreencomicsbeforetheywenttopress,and
onlyallowtheCodemarktoappearifthecomicpassedtheirstandards.
TheCodewasalarminglystrict.Itbarredpublishersfromusingthewords'crime,''horror'or'terror'in
theirtitles,thusforcingECtoabandonsomeoftheirmostpopulartitles.Policeofficerscouldnotbe
portrayedinanegativelight,andifavillaincommittedmurder,hewouldhavetobecaughtand
punishedbytheendofthestory.Nomentionwasallowedofvampires,werewolvesorzombies,another
swipeatEC.YearslaterwhenMarvelintroducedzombiesintotheirbooks,theyhadtocallthem
'zuvembies'inordertopasstheCode.Ingeneral,DCandMarvelweresupportiveoftheCode,butEC
struggledtocopewiththenewrules,andeventuallyabandonedmostoftheirtitlestofocusonMad
Magazine,whichdidnotneedCodeapproval.
Thecodealsocontainedprovisionsagainstsuggestiveorsalaciousillustration,andrequiredthatfemales
bedrawnrealisticallywithoutundueexposure.ThiswasaknockatFictionHouse'sgoodgirlartcovers,
andmayhavecontributedtoFictionHouse'sclosure.

Magazinesandcomicstrips

NorthAmericancomicbookstendtobearound7by10inchesinsize.Magazinesvary,butareusually
larger.ComicbookstendedtohaveaComicCodelabelmarkingthemassuitableforchildren,while
magazineshadnosuchrequirement.Thisledtomagazinesbecomingoneofthemostcommonformats
foradultcomics.
Playboymagazinefirstcameoutin1953.Itwouldfeaturesinglepanelcartoonsbyartistssuchas
AlbertoVargas,ArchieComicsartistDanDeCarlo,JackCole,LeRoyNeimanandlaterOliviaDe
BerardinisandDeanYeagle.
Inthemid1960s,PlayboymagazinestartedincludingamultipagestripcalledLittleAnnieFannybyEC
alumniHarveyKurtzmanandWillElderwithanoccasionalassistfromartistFrankFrazetta.Anniehad
troublekeepingherclotheson,atrendseenalsointhestripsTheAdventuresofPhoebeZeitGeist,Wally
Wood'sSallyForth,andPenthouse'sOhWickedWandabyRonEmbleton.Penthousewouldlaterput
outanumberoferoticcomicmagazines:PenthouseComix,PenthouseMen'sAdventureandPenthouse
MaxwiththelikesofAdamHughescontributingartwork.
From1965,WarrenPublishingstartedpublishingtwoblackandwhitemagazines,CreepyandEerie,
commissioningworkfromtheartistswhohadworkedonEC'shorrorline.WarrenaddedVampirellain
1969,andthenthesciencefictionmagazinetitled1984(later1994)startingintheyear1978.Thelarge
formatofthesetitlesmeantthattheycouldbesoldwithothermagazinesaimedatadultsratherthan
displayedincomicrackswherethechildorientedtitleswerefound.
ThepublishersoftheAmericanhumormagazineNationalLampoondiscoveredtheFrenchadult
magazineMetalHurlant,andin1977startedpublishingHeavyMetaltranslatingtheworkofJean
ClaudeForest,JeanGiraud,GuidoCrepax,MiloManaraandVittorioGiardinoforanEnglishaudience.
HeavyMetalalsoprovidedaforumfortheworkofAmericancreatorssuchasRichardCorbenand
HowardChaykin.
In1983,Warrenwentbankrupt,butmorerecently,DarkHorseComicshasbeenreprintingsomeof
Warren'soldstories,andhasrevivedtheCreepyandEeriemagazines.

Undergroundcomics
Adultcomicscontinuedundergroundinthelate1960soutsidetheumbrellaoftheCCA.The
undergroundcomicsmovementwasspearheadedbycreatorssuchasArtSpiegelman,RobertCrumb,
HarveyPekar,KimDeitchandSpainRodriguez.LarryWelzappearedinthe1980swithhisCherry
book,anundergroundstyleeroticparodyofArchieComics.Thesetitleswereoftensoldatheadshops,
buttheseestablishmentswereoftenatloggerheadswiththepolice,sometimesmakingdistribution
difficult.

Independentpublishers
In1966,WallyWoodhitupontheideaofpublishinghisowncomic,andsellingitthroughcomicbook
specialtyshops.Recruitingstarcreatorsfromamonghisfriends,witzendfeaturedoneoffstripsona
widevarietyofthemesbythelikesofJackKirby,SteveDitko,FrankFrazetta,GilKaneandArt
Spiegelman.
FantagraphicsBooksbeganin1976,publishingtheComicsJournalandlaterAmazingHeroeswithtext
articlesaboutthecomicsfield,buttheybeganpublishingactualcomicsin1982,notablyLoveand
RocketsbyGilbertandJaimeHernandez.In1990,FantagraphicsestablishedtheirErosComiximprint,
reprintingtitlesbyWallyWoodandFrankThorneaswellasGilbert'sBirdland.

CanadianDaveSimbeganpublishingCerebusin1977,andRichardandWendyPiniputoutElfquest
startingin1978,initiallythroughtheirownWaRPcompany.PacificComicswasformedin1981,and
becamethefirstpublisherofDaveStevens'sRocketeerwhichwaseventuallymadeintoamovie.
StevensmodeledoneofthecharactersonBettiePageharkeningbacktoanearliereraofclandestine
publishing.
AntarcticPresswasfoundedin1984,andpublishesAmericanmangaandindependentcreators,notably
TerryMoore'sStrangersinParadise.
DarkHorseComicswasfoundedin1986,andisperhapsmostnotableforitsadultorientedanthology,
DarkHorsePresentswhichfirstpublishedFrankMiller'snoirishSinCity,latermadeintoafeaturefilm.
AvatarPressbeganprovidingashowcasefortheworksofAlanMooreandAlRioin1996.TopShelf
Productionswasformedin1997,notablypublishingMooreandMelindaGebbie'sLostGirlserotic
graphicnovel.

Mainstreampublishers
ThepublisherofMarvelComicsinthe1960s,MartinGoodman,wasalsothepublisherforanumberof
men'sadventuremagazines:Men,MaleandStag.Inthesemagazines,theyincludedastripcalledThe
AdventuresofPussycatdrawnbyWallyWoodandBillWard.Thesestripswereeventuallycollected,
andreleasedasaoneshotmagazinein1968.Inside,itislistedasbeingprintedbyMarvelComics,but
thereisnoMarvellogoonthecover,noranyComicsCodemark.ThelackofaComicsCodemarkcame
tobeasubtlesignthatonemightfindadultcontentinside.
IntriguedbyWarren'ssuccesswiththeirblackandwhitetitles,MarvelComicstriedtheirhandatthis
fieldaswellreleasingSavageTalesstartingin1971,TombofDraculain1972andSavageSwordof
Conanin1974.In1974,MarvelevenreleasedthreeissuesofComixBookundertheirCurtisimprint
featuringtheworkofundergroundcreators.HeavyMetal'ssuccesswithglossycolorsciencefictionand
fantasydidn'tgounnoticedeither,andin1980,MarvelreleasedtheirEpicIllustratedmagazineaswell
asanumberofadultthemedgraphicnovelsundertheEpiclabel.By1986though,theyhadcancelled
EpicIllustrated,althoughSavageSwordofConancontinuedrunninguntil1995.
Bythe1980s,therewasagrowingtrendtowardsgrimandgrittyantiheroesandincreasingviolencein
comics.MarvelComics'Punisherreceivedhisowntitlein1985,andin1986,DCComics'Watchmenby
AlanMooreandTheDarkKnightReturnsbyFrankMillerexploredissuesrelatedtovigilantes.
In1986,DCComicsstartedpublishingcomicswiththewords"ForMatureReaders"or"Suggestedfor
MatureReaders"ontheircovers.ThesematurereaderstitlesincludedTheShadow(1986),TheQuestion
(from#81987),SlashMaraud(19878),SwampThing(from#571987),Vigilante(from#4419878),
Wasteland(1987),Batman:TheKillingJoke(1988),GreenArrow(#162198892),Haywire(19889),
Hellblazer(1988),TailgunnerJo(19889),VforVendetta(1988),Blackhawk(198990),Deadman:
LoveAfterDeath(1989),GilgameshII(1989),TheSandman(1989),DoomPatrol(1990),Shadethe

In1993,DCstarteduptheirVertigoimprintthatallowedexplicitcontentinselectedtitles,groupinga
numberoftheirmaturereaderstitlestogether.NotableVertigotitlesincludetheEisnerAwardwinners,
Fables,100Bullets,PreacherandTheSandmanaswellasseveralbooksthathavebeenadaptedinto
featurefilms,Hellblazer,AHistoryofViolence,StardustandVforVendetta.

In2001,MarvelComicsdecidedtowithdrawfromtheComicsCodeAuthority,andsetuptheirown
contentratingsystem,andanadultorientedMaximprint.InJanuary2011,DCannouncedthatthey
werewithdrawingfromtheComicsCodeaswell,andthesoleremainingAuthoritymemberArchie
Comicswithdrewthedayafter,bringingthecodetoitsend.

Femaleartistsandwriters
Althoughmostwritersandartistsofadultcomicshavebeenmen,therehavebeenanumberofwomen
workinginthefield.Asmentionedabove,OliviaDeBerardiniscontributesillustrationstoPlayboy
magazine.ElaineLee,awriterwhohasworkedforbothDCandMarvel,collaboratedwithartist
MichaelKalutatoproduceSkinTightOrbit,acollectionofadultshortstoriespublishedbyNBMfor
theirAmeroticalabel.WendyPinihasalsoworkedforMarvel,butisperhapsbestknownforher
ElfquestserieswhichsheproducedwithherhusbandRichard.AmandaConnerwasoneoftheartistwho
workedonDC/Vertigo'sCodename:Knockout.MelindaGebbiewastheartistwhoworkedwithAlan
MooreontheeroticLostGirlsgraphicnovel.

Europe
TheFrenchcomicsanthologyPilotewaspublishedfrom195989,andfeaturedtheworkofadult
orientedcreatorssuchasJeanGiraud(Moebius),GuidoCrepax,CazaandtheAmericanRobertCrumb.
By1974,JeanGiraudandsomeofhiscomradeshadbecomedissatisfiedwithPilote,andbrokeoffto
foundtheMetalHurlantmagazinetoshowcaseadultcomicsinthesciencefictionorfantasygenres.
InFrancein1962,JeanClaudeForeststartedproducingastripcalledBarbarella,setinouterspace,but
wheretheheroinefoundherselflosingherclothingorendingupinsexualsituations.
Bythemid1960s,therewerequiteafewcomicstripsfeaturingsexuallyliberatedheroines:Modesty
BlaiseandMayfair'sCarriebyDonLawrenceinEngland,TheAdventuresofJodelleinFrance,Isabella
(bySandroAngiolini)andValentinainItaly.
In1977,theBritishanthology2000A.D.firstappeared,andfeaturedtheworkofmanywritersand
artistswhoweretobecomeinfluentialintheadultcomicsfieldintheU.S.later,notablyAlanMooreand
DaveGibbonswhocreatedWatchmenandNeilGaimanwhowentontoworkonTheSandman.Another
popularBritishmagazineisVizwhichparodiesearlierBritishcomicsanthologieswithaninjectionof
incongruoussexorviolence.While2000A.D.isadventureoriented,andVizfocusedonpottyhumor,
RaymondBriggstriedtogiveBritishcomicsamoreserioustonewithworkssuchasWhentheWind
Blowsaboutanoldercoupletryingtocometotermswiththeaftermathofanuclearattack.
In1978,theBelgiancompanyCastermanstartedputtingoutthemagazineSuivreattracting
submissionsbymanyofthesamecontributorswhowereseeninMetalHurlant.Catalan
CommunicationsandmorerecentlyNBMPublishinghavealsopublishedadultworksfromEurope
mostlyasstandalonegraphicnovels,althoughNBMnowhasananthologymagazinecalledSizzle.
HoracioAltunaisanArgentineartistwhohasdonemanyfourpagestripsforPlayboyMagazine's
Spanish,ItalianandGermaneditions.

Japanesemanga

InJapan,comicbooks(manga)intendedforadultsareusuallydividedinto'seinenmanga'(
comicsformen)and'joseimanga'( comicsforwomen).Eroticcomicsaimedatmenare
referredtoas'seijinmukemanga'()or'eromanga'andthoseaimedatwomenarecalled
'ladiescomics'()(seealsotheEnglishloanword'hentai').Shonenmangaforboys
tendtooutsellseinenmangawhichinturnoutsellseijinmukemanga.[3]
Someofthefirstspecializedmangamagazineswereaimedatadultmen.WeeklyMangaTimesdebuted
in1956,andoriginallyfocusedoneroticfictionand'pornomanga'.WeeklyMangaGorakufirstcame
outin1964,andwasalsoaimedattherelativelyolderdemographicofmenfromtheir30'sthroughto
their50's.MangaActionandYoungComicdebutedin1967,followedbyBigComicin1968,with
WeeklyYoungJumpfollowingin1979,andWeeklyYoungMagazinein1980.Mangawiththeword
