Research (3-5)
Amara comes to school with a positive sense of self. She is independent and she also
participates in all of the classroom activities. With encouragement, Amara will try
new activities in the classroom. She tends to play with same children daily, but with
encouragement from the teachers, she will engage with different children. Amara
shows curiosity as a learner, she asks questions for clarity. If a conflict comes about,
she will seek guidance from an adult to help her solve the issue. She has begun to
speak up and let other children know what she likes and dislikes, as well as express
her emotions to others.
Amara listens with understanding what is about to take place next in the flow of the
day. She follows directions, without reminders to stay on task. She is also able to
distinguish words by sound. Amara speaks with sufficient clarity but in a low tone
but teachers and students are able to comprehend what she is saying. Amara has a
strong interest in reading and writing. She is able to write her first name. She is still
learning how to read words, but can identify her name. Amara draws pictures often
of her family and some of the activities that they do at home.
Mathematical processes
Number and operations
Patterns, relationships, and functions
Geometry and spatial relations
Measurement
Data collection and probability (K-5)
Amara uses simple math strategies to count. She chooses the counter job
for meeting to count the children that are present in class as well as other
activities that involve numbers and their quantity. Amara counts and uses
number with understanding and organizes materials in one to one
correspondence. She can add one or two objects together with more
objects and the count how many she has total. She is beginning to tell the
differences and similarities in shapes. She has noticed more things that
have line or stripes on them and will let a teacher know when she finds
them.
Inquiry
Physical science (K-5)
Life science (K-5)
Earth science (K-5)
Amara is curious and likes to know how things work. She is very attentive when a new
activity or idea is introduced to the classroom. With teacher support, we encourage Amara to
think further about how something works or what will happen if she was to make a change to
her idea. Amara has explored with different materials to see how they work in different
textures. As in painting with different brushes and using watercolors, etc. She knows the
difference when something is alive or when it is not. She also beginning to learn the needs of
creatures or plants and what they need to survive. She is observant of the changes of seasons
and climate.
Amara has been talking more recently about physical characteristics, different skin tones,
hair textures that we all have, as well as how we are all different, and the similarities that we
have. She is very interested in family roles and relationships. In the dramatic play area is
where we see Amara display her knowledge of a family and the responsibility the mom
has. She also acts out going to the grocery store, taking her baby to a doctors appointment,
etc. She understands why rules are important and in morning meeting she has shown that she
is able to create her own rules and follow through with her choices.
Amara enjoys dancing and participating in music and movement. When it is her time
to show her special move, she takes the time and think about what she wants to do.
She enjoys to draw her family and talk about what is going on in her picture.
Amara moves with balance and control. She is able to combine movements to accomplish
increasingly physical tasks. She enjoys exploring campus and climbing, she shows that she has
control and excitement when she is able to climb to on rocks. She displays her fine motor skills by
writing her name, using scissors, etc. She is self-sufficient with taking care of her hygiene. She
follows the rules for safety and holds a teacher or friend hand when crossing the street.
