A Briefer on Design of Work Systems, Job Design, Work Measurement,
Compensation Plan, Workers Involvement, Learning Curves
Aside from improving the quality of products to increase sales or minimizing cost
to have greater profits, one factor that an organization must look into are its work
systems and job design. Having efficient and effective people that do their jobs well
contribute largely to a companys success.. Job design is very important especially in
production and operations management since product output is a main objective which
can only be delivered by its workers and employees. I can relate this in the field of
education nowadays, teacher factor is always looked into when it comes to students
academic performance. The strategies and methods of teaching in a way is like a job
design and specialization is a key in ensuring that the teacher can offer expertise in the
subjects taught. The best pedagogy is searched for and benchmarked, this will be
shared to others so they can improve their teaching methods and increase performance
of students.
Behavioural approaches to work design is a positive and encouraging way of
enhancing productivity and efficiency. When peoples needs (like social and economic)
are addressed they can be more productive and efficient. As Abraham Maslows Theory
in the Hierarchy of needs, people will always have a need for self-actualization but this
can only be reached when the basic needs are met. In the behavioural approach of
work design, human potential is developed and used so there should also be a careful
analysis on human behaviour that can bring about the needed change. This fact should
be understood well in order to choose the best approach in bringing about workers
satisfaction.
Teamwork under the behavioural approach, for me is the best approach, since
team members can get to know each other well and can find ways to address each
others need, before they work on achieving their goal. In teamwork there is a closer
coordination and team members dont feel left out or threatened.

Compensation and incentives are also great motivators in work productivity.

Oftentimes however, it is also a cause of dispute and envy. This could also lead to
competition which may be an advantage to the company. But competition among
employees should not get out of hand for it to be beneficial. Competition may cause
stress to an employee, which becomes unhealthy. Even with higher incentives, people
prefer to work under a smooth environment than thrive in a difficult one.
Because of the various concerns in addressing employees, method analysis is
best combined with the approaches, in coming up with how the job is to be done
successfully. After analyzing inputs from employees and the current method used, a
new method can be proposed and used which should be monitored to see if
improvements are being done. A flow process chart is very useful on this stage.
Since a successful job design is one that is consistent with the goals of an
organization, the employees should be taught of these goals so they could aim for
achieving it in their work output. Just like in our organization, we are constantly
reminded of our goals and how we should work for it. Often, this becomes synonymous
with productivity and efficiency. One cannot be a productive and efficient employee if
the goals of the organization are not met. However, with the right motivation and
environment workers will become a valuable asset to an organization.
