Voorhees Theatre Company summer camp
presents The Lion King, Jr. musical from Aug. 3 to 6

Students with the Voorhees
Theatre Company have been
hard at work practicing their
roars as they prepare to present
Disneys The Lion King, Jr.
from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6 at Voorhees

Middle School.
The performances will serve
as the culmination of the
Voorhees Theatre Companys
Summer Youth Program, where
for the past six weeks two casts
of more than 150 elementary
and middle school students have
split their days rehearsing for

the big show and attending theater workshops.

According to program director and choreographer Sandi

program four days a week,

Those in Voorhees who might

have always dreamed about
learning a second or even third
language will now have some
help in making that dream a reality thanks to the Camden County
Library System.
As of last week, the Camden
County Library System, including the Voorhees Branch Library,
is now offering library cardholders free access to the well-known
Rosetta Stone language learning
software.
Named after the famous Rosetta Stone rock stele found in 1799
that provided the modern worlds
key to understanding and translating Egyptian hieroglyphs, the
Rosetta Stone computer program
uses a combination of sounds,
text and images to teach users 30
of the worlds most common languages.
Users can chose from such languages as Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese,
Arabic and even English for nonnative English speaking users.
According to a press release
from the Camden County Library
System, Camden County Library

Director Linda Devlin said she

was pleased to offer such a valuable language learning resource
to patrons of the library system.
Helping to meet the interests
and needs of our residents in this
very practical way also fosters
cultural awareness in the diverse
communities of Camden County
and New Jersey, Devlin said.
Its one more benefit that adds
value to having a library card and
access to all that we offer residents.
According to that same release,
more than 22,000 schools and
12,000 businesses have used Rosetta Stone to help teach new languages for more than 20 years.
Devlin said the library system
was also able to now offer Rosetta
thanks to aid from the State Library.
When the New Jersey State
Library started offering Rosetta
Stone free of charge to New Jersey libraries, we all win, Devlin
said. Library users all around
the state enjoy a premier language resource free of charge, financed by the state library. It is
an expensive resource that many
libraries could not afford on their

HOPE Church
drama camp
puts on play
The Kingdom Connection:
Where the Bible Comes
to Life set for Aug. 4
After a whirlwind two-week
summer music/drama camp held
at HOPE Church, more than 60
third through eighth graders will
be performing a production of
The
Kingdom
Connection:
Where the Bible Comes to Life
on Thursday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. at
the church campus located at 700
Cooper Road in Voorhees.
In just two weeks time, participants will have learned their
songs, their lines and their dance
moves all while constructing
their own stage sets. The only
thing left is to share what theyve
learned with the community.
Join the tour as our kids meet
King David, King Saul, King
Herod and that wise ruler, King
Solomon. The performance delivers the ultimate message that,
even among all the powerful
kings of the Bible, the one true
king, the king of all kings, the one
needed most in ones live, is King
Jesus. Attendees dont have to go
to a museum to learn about our
God, because of Jesus, all can experience the Kingdom of God
both now and in heaven.
The performance is free and
open to the public and nursery
care is provided. All are welcome.

Public comment period

extended for EPA plan
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has extended the
public comment period for its
proposed plan to address contaminated soil at the Route 561 Dump
site in Gibbsboro to Aug. 11.
The site is an area near a former paint manufacturing plant
and was previously used as a
paint waste dump.
The Route 561 Dump site includes businesses, a vacant lot, a
small creek called White Sand
Branch and wetlands. The soil at
the Route 561 Dump site is contaminated with lead and arsenic.
The EPA plan includes removing and disposing of contaminated soil from portions of the site
and backfilling the area with
clean soil. The soil would be dug
up and properly disposed of at facilities licensed to handle the
waste.
In total, approximately 23,000

cubic yards of contaminated soil

will be removed. A cap, consisting
of soil cover in vegetated areas or
asphalt on portions of commercial properties, will also be installed in parts of the site.
Written comments may be
mailed or emailed to Renee Gelblat, remedial project manager,
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, 290 Broadway, New York,

last week, one week after the
Republican National Convention
ended in Cleveland, Ohio.
Now, the two divisive candidates
Hillary Clinton for the Democrats and
Donald Trump for the Republicans
head toward the final stretch in the
race to be our next president.
The general election will be held on
Tuesday, Nov. 8, a little more than three
months from now. And in those three
months, not only are we, the American
public, about to be educated about each
candidates positions and why we
should elect him or her, but were also
about to be bombarded even more
than we already have been with ugly,
political rhetoric through advertising.

This is going to be an ugly few
months.
For those of us who are more interested in the issues, or who at least hope
the issues will come to the forefront of
the campaigns, presidential debates
will be held on Monday, Sept. 26 at Hofstra University in New York; Sunday,
Oct. 9 at Washington University in St.
Louis; and Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The vice presidential debate will be
held on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Longwood

University in Farmwood, Va.

Whomever you like more whether
it be Clinton, Trump or another candidate such as Libertarian Gary Johnson make sure that you cross off Nov.

vote.
Voting is one of the most sacred of
rights we have as Americans, so if
youre eligible to vote, you should head
to the polls without reservations. You
only have one chance every four years
to help choose who the leader of our
country will be. Decide to stay on the
sidelines, and youll have passed on the
opportunity to participate in U.S. politics. Nowadays, as politicians have
seemed to become more separated
from their constituents, voting is the
one last way we can exercise our right
to participate.

Voorhees native English Gardner heads to Olympics

The 31st Olympiad will begin in Rio de
Janeiro on Aug. 5 when 206 countries will
bring more than 10,500 athletes who will
compete in 306 events within 42 sporting
disciplines utilizing 37 different venues.
Rio is the first South American city to host
the Olympics and this will be the first Summer Olympics held in a country during its
winter season.
It will also be the first Olympics for
Voorhees own English Gardner. The 24year-old sprinter will be competing in the
100m race and in the 4 x 100m relay race.
Gardner was born in Willingboro but
was raised in Voorhees and is a 2010 graduate of Eastern Regional High School. She
got her sprinting start with the Carl Lewis
Track Club when she was only 12 years old
and immediately began winning championships
After Gardner tore her knee ligaments

two days before

Thanksgiving during her junior year
at Eastern playing
in a charity powder

most colleges withdrew their scholarship offers. The
University of Oregon was one of the
few schools that
stuck with Gardner. She rehabbed

100m titles for the Ducks. Garner also captured the 100m at the 2013 U.S. Championships and placed seventh in the 100m at
the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
On July 3 at the US Olympic Trials,
Gardner blazed her way to victory in a historic womens 100m final with a personal
best time of 10.74 seconds. It was the
fourth-fastest time in womens U.S. history
and the seventh-fastest 100m time ever run
by a woman.
Good luck in Rio, English!

theyll either attend show practice or workshops taught by theater professionals.

Those workshops might cover
topics such as dance or vocal
training, with many of the workshops taught by former Voorhees
Theatre Company students.
We get kids coming in at all
different skill levels, so were able
to nurture them and teach them
and give the tools that they actually need to work on stage so that
when they come to rehearsals, by
the end of the program, theyve
actually built a skill, Makofsky
said.
Makofsky said the program
has a sizable number of students
who have never participated in
the program or any theater at all
before, but it also features some
students who are already working
actors who keep returning to
VTC because it feels like a family

to them.
I love to see their growth, and I
love to see them working in other
places. We have kids that are
working on Broadway, we have
kids that are doing touring companies, and we have kids that are
teaching, so its pretty cool to be
the base of that, Makofsky said.
One student with a lead role in
the show is 13-year-old Giovanni
Faltz, who will be playing the
character of Simba as an adult.
Giovanni said hes played lead
roles in shows before, but noted
the VTC summer program was
his favorite camp because all of
the practice the students undergo
eventually leads to them getting
to perform their own show.
We have a great cast like
everybody has been saying, and
its a great show for all ages to
come and watch and we put on a
good show, Giovanni said.
For 13-year-old Seth Wise, who
will be playing the shows main
antagonist as the role of Scar, he
said hes had fun playing the villain of the show as it allows him
to act in ways one wouldnt have
the chance to do with other roles.
We have an amazing cast and
we worked really hard, Seth
said. We all have a lot of fun
doing it.
For 12-year-old student Maddie
Allen, who will be playing the
role of Rafiki, she said she has a
fun role because the character is
playful and outgoing, similar to
how she acts offstage. Maddie
said she enjoys having a charac-

ter she can play around with, and

she also enjoys all of the singing
in the show.
Theres a lot of African language that we have to all get used
to, and its not like another show
where you just learn the lyrics,
Maddie said. It takes a lot of
practice and rehearsal. I think its
definitely worth seeing because
we spent a lot of time on it.
Overall, Makofsky said audiences will be in for a surprise
with the high level of skill her
group of students already possesses, despite their young age.
They can actually perform,
and they can actually grow, and
they can actually do what they do
on Broadway, so I think people
will be happily surprised,
Makofsky said.
