Readers Choice is an
opportunity for Albuquerque
Journal readers to get
involved and vote for their
favorites across a wide
variety of categories, says
Lauren Rolls, marketing
manager for the Albuquerque
Journal.
Readers had 133 categories
to consider this year, from
favorite doughnut shop to
podiatrist to dog groomer to
place to watch a sunset.
Rolls adds that reader
participation has increased
from year to year.
In some categories its clear
our readers have favorites,
with several three-peat
winners, while in other
categories there have been
different winners each year.

began his long relationship with
local audiences the following year.
I just love New Mexico, period,
Joles says. Its such an engaging
place with a diverse population,

multiculturalism that you dont find
other places.
Joles grew up in Wisconsin where
his mother still lives. He earned
his bachelor of science degree
from the University of Wisconsin
at Eau Claire. While studying he
spent a semester at the University
of Copenhagen in Denmark. He
has traveled extensively. Reported
on war in Nicaragua in the late

Trader Joes is a supermarket
chain with headquarters in

the Assistance League Thrift Shop is the
place to go.
The shop is staffed entirely by volunteers
and is the fundraising arm of the
Assistance League Albuquerque.
The store features gently used items that

were donated by the public. In addition
to clothing and household item, the store
has jewelry, shoes, books and sports
equipment.
Thrift store manager Louise Odegaard
says the store allows the group to help
many people in the community.
Nobody does this for money, she
says. The camaraderie of the group is
amazing.

with them. The store has passed on to the next
generations, who still own and run the store.
On staff, are also master goldsmiths and
watchmakers. The store specializes in
diamonds, says part owner Mike Butterfield.

This year marks 35 years in the art gallery

business for Mary Ann Weems, who opened her
first location in the Eastdale shopping center
at Eubank and Candelaria in 1981. At that time,
Weems recalls, the local art market was geared

location Downtown and has since

several awards.

Cucumber Basil Gimlet combines
the vegetable and spice with vodka,
fresh lime juice and a simple,
homemade syrup to create a daring,
enticing mixture.
It recently renovated its Downtown

location, adding a rooftop patio. Owners
plan to open an east side location near
Montgomery and Eubank no later than
this fall, according to spokeswoman
Elyse Cushman.
