NEWSCASTER
WINNER: Tom Joles
KOB-TV Channel 4s Eyewitness
News evening co-anchor Tom Joles
came to New Mexico in 1987 and
began his long relationship with
local audiences the following year.
I just love New Mexico, period,
Joles says. Its such an engaging
place with a diverse population,
great places to play outside and a
multiculturalism that you dont find
other places.
Joles grew up in Wisconsin where
his mother still lives. He earned
his bachelor of science degree
from the University of Wisconsin
at Eau Claire. While studying he
spent a semester at the University
of Copenhagen in Denmark. He
has traveled extensively. Reported
on war in Nicaragua in the late
1970s for WFRV-TV in Green Bay,

Tom Joles

RADIO PERSONALITY

Wis., and later toured Europe and

worked on a journalism project in
Israel.
He has won many awards since
coming to Albuquerque.
New Mexico is a tough audience
for someone coming in from the
outside, Joles says. People are
generally skeptical of folks from
other places, so its very flattering
to be accepted and trusted by New
Mexicans.

BARBER SHOP
WINNER: Fade Station Barber Shop
5105 Menaul NE; 881-3233
With nine traditional barbers, Fade Station revels in the oldfashioned art of barbering akin to when the rotating, candy-striped
pole announced the business.
Our slogan is Where detail makes the difference, says owner
Joseph Baca, who opened Fade Station in 2005. Detail work on
beards, detail work on shaves. You can still get a straight razor
shave and a hot towel shave.
But Baca also requires that the barbers be up-to-date on modern
techniques and styles to bring the best of the old and new.

This year marks 35 years in the art gallery

business for Mary Ann Weems, who opened her
first location in the Eastdale shopping center
at Eubank and Candelaria in 1981. At that time,
Weems recalls, the local art market was geared
more toward expensive pieces. Her idea was to
make buying art more accessible and affordable
for the general public by having an informal gallery
environment and offering lay-away purchase
plans.

New Yorkers Jean and Mark

Bernstein opened their first

1987. Their goal was to create
a place where people could
drop in at any time and get a

We have a wonderful staff

co-owner Jean Bernstein,
Were really committed to
dessert making.

The Juan Tabo restaurant

expanded to several more over
the next 15 years.
They changed name to the

of the same name. The Flying
Star name was chosen based
on interviews with customers,
employees and the Bernsteins,
it was taken from a 1950s

While ordinary cocktails can be

found at Mtuccis, its the signature
shrub drinks that sets the place
apart.

This local brewery started with its first

location Downtown and has since
expanded to the West Side and won
several awards.

For instance, says general manager

and partner-to-be Austin Leard, the
Cucumber Basil Gimlet combines
the vegetable and spice with vodka,
fresh lime juice and a simple,
homemade syrup to create a daring,
enticing mixture.

It recently renovated its Downtown

location, adding a rooftop patio. Owners
plan to open an east side location near
Montgomery and Eubank no later than
this fall, according to spokeswoman
Elyse Cushman.

Theyre extremely unique, Leard

says of the fruit-based cocktail menu
that he created. Weve been doing
it for about two years now and its
been very successful for us.
