Global Warming
In the Twenty-first century, we are constantly hearing about Global Warming, but how
many of us actually understand what Global Warming is? According to Merriam Websters
dictionary, Global Warming is an increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures
widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from
pollution. Although, the effects of Global Warming might not seem obvious at first, after doing
some research, you might begin to see what negative effects its having on the Earth. For
example, Global Warming has been known to cause sea level rise to accelerate, increase the
number of forest fires, and causes more severe droughts.
Although most scientists agree that Global Warming is a problem, however, not all of
them see it that way. In fact, the Heartland Institute, a 32-year-old national nonprofit research
organization, doesnt view Global Warming as a crisis at all. According to their research, the
Earth was warmer than it is now in recorded human history, before man-made greenhouse gas
emissions couldve been the cause. In addition, they argue that contrary to what the alarmist
might want you to think, the small rise in temperature hasnt been found to cause an increase in
the amount of moisture in the atmosphere.

Furthermore, the Heartland Institute claims that not all of the effects of Global Warming
are bad either. They explain that its possible that Global warming could even improve the
weather, lower the frequency and severity of hurricanes, and help fertilize plants and make them
more drought resistant. Although these findings might seem to contradict what most of us have
read or heard, their findings are backed by numerous research from Roy Spencer and Craig Idso
of the Heartland Institute.
Contrary to what the Heartland Institutes research has found, the Union of Concerned
Scientists (UCS) presents information that shows an increase in temperature of more than 1
degree a year since the late 1800s. This information is drastically different from the increase of
0.123 degrees C per decade that the Heartland Institute was showing. In addition, UCS also
claim that every one of the past 38 years has been warmer than the 20th century average.
According to their findings, Global warming isnt providing any positive benefits, rather, its
causing more frequent and intense heat waves, heavier precipitation and flooding, and increased
air pollution.
Based on research presented by Bill McKibben in his article Global Warmings
Terrifying New Chemistry we learn that Carbon Dioxide is no longer the main cause of Global
Warming. He explains that Harvard researchers published an explosive paper in Geophysical
Research letters that showed data proving that the nation, as a whole, is leaking methane in
massive quantities. According to the data, which was captured using satellites and ground
observations, the US methane emissions increased by more than 30 percent between 2002 and
2014. (McKibben)
Although the US, under the Obama administration, continues to try and reduce the
amount of carbon dioxide emissions, the alternative weve created, natural gas, requires fracking

for extraction and creates even bigger problems. On paper, it might seem as though we are
making improvements since the change from burning coal to burning natural gas for energy,
however, this isnt the case. The amount of carbon dioxide has gone down, but the amount of
methane being released into the atmosphere has increased. In fact, according to two Cornell
scientists, Robert Howarth and Anthony Ingraffea, fracking leaks between 3.6 and 7.9 percent of
the methane gas. This wouldnt be as big of a problem if methane didnt absorb as much heat as
it does. According to Howarth, methane absorbs between 86 and 105 times that of carbon
dioxide which would create even higher levels of Global Warming. (McKibben)
In conclusion, after reflecting upon all of the scientific findings discussed in this paper, I
believe that Global Warming is a huge issue. It shouldnt come as a surprise when were seeing
record breaking temperatures throughout the world. After reading McKibbens article on
fracking, this issue has become even more alarming. Now is the time for the great minds of this
world to find more effective and cleaner energy alternatives. Weve already began to harness
solar and wind energies, but I believe weve just scratched the surface. Now is the time to find a
solution, before its too late.
